Google appears to be moving some Gemini model access behind paid plans, but the precise October 2026 rules for free and Google AI Plus users are not settled. TechRadar reported that those users would lose access to some models; Google’s current help page still lists Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro across the displayed plans. Google warns that access and usage limits can change, so check the live plan table for your account and region before subscribing.
Is Google making Gemini Pro paid?
Not conclusively, based on the information currently available. A TechRadar report describes an October 2026 change under which free and Google AI Plus users would lose access to some Gemini models. However, Google’s Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page currently lists Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro for all plans shown, including accounts without an AI subscription. Google says model availability and limits can change.
That leaves a meaningful difference between a reported rollout and a confirmed, universal policy. The available information does not establish exactly which model each free or Plus user will get, when any change applies to a particular account, or whether the rules vary by region. Check the current plan table in your own account rather than assuming either that Pro is permanently free or that every free user has already lost access.
What do Gemini’s model levels do?
Google describes the three levels by their intended balance of speed and capability. These descriptions are Google’s product positioning, not independent performance evaluations.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
| Model | Google’s description | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Flash-Lite | “An efficient workhorse model designed for speed.” | Positioned for fast, everyday tasks. |
| Flash | “A more powerful model that balances speed and reasoning to solve a large variety of problems, from simple to complex.” | Designed to balance responsiveness with reasoning across a wider range of tasks. |
| Pro | “Our most advanced model that excels at complex math and coding prompts with high performance and reasoning.” | Positioned for more demanding reasoning, math, and coding work. |
Which option is useful to you depends on your task, not just the model label. If you regularly need advanced reasoning, coding help, or complex math, Pro’s availability may matter more than it does for quick everyday requests. Google’s stated usage limits and the model access displayed for your plan matter alongside the model name.
What should free and Google AI Plus users check?
Google’s help page is the place to verify current access; its displayed table can change as models, limits, and plan features are updated. Before paying or changing plans, check the details that affect your actual use:

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers

- Model availability: Confirm which models your account can select, rather than relying on a report about a planned change.
- Usage limits: Check how much access your plan provides and whether it meets your typical workload.
- Context window: Compare how much material a model can handle if you work with long documents or conversations.
- Price, region, and timing: Confirm the current terms for your location and when any announced feature or policy takes effect.
- Included benefits: Consider storage and other bundled plan features, not only model access.
Google’s Google AI subscription updates describe subscription features and top-up AI credits for Google Antigravity and Flow for Pro and Ultra subscribers; the announcement described Gemini app top-ups as coming soon. These credits are a separate consideration from whether a model is included in a personal plan.

Google’s AI business extends beyond the Gemini app’s personal subscriptions. Its commercial routes include consumer AI plans, enterprise products, direct API use, and additional access for eligible Workspace users. This layered approach gives Google several ways to charge for AI usage; it does not prove that free users are converting at a particular rate.

Consumer subscriptions
Google said consumer AI plans contributed to Google One revenue growth. In its Q1 2026 earnings remarks, CEO Sundar Pichai said, “In subscriptions, this was our strongest quarter ever for our consumer AI plans, primarily driven by adoption of the Gemini App.” That is a company-reported statement about a strong quarter, not a conversion rate or evidence that restricting model access caused subscriptions to grow. See Google’s Q1 2026 earnings remarks.
Enterprise access
Google reported that Gemini Enterprise paid monthly active users grew 40% quarter over quarter in Q1 2026. Separately, Google Workspace described user-initiated purchases of an AI Expanded Access add-on for eligible users who reach certain usage limits, alongside administrator or partner purchase routes. This is an organizational licensing mechanism, distinct from a personal Google AI plan. Details are in Google Workspace’s announcement.
API and cloud usage
Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings release reported 22 billion Gemini API tokens processed per minute and Google Cloud revenue of $24.8 billion, up 82%; it attributed Cloud growth to enterprise AI solutions and infrastructure as well as core cloud services. The same release reported revenue from products built on Google’s generative AI models grew nearly 800% year over year in Q1 2026, as did Google’s Q1 remarks. These are company disclosures about usage and revenue—not independent measures of consumer conversion or proof that a paywall produced the growth. See the Q2 2026 earnings release.

Does restricted access mean AI services are failing to convert users?
No conclusion like that follows from the available figures. Google’s reported subscription, enterprise, API, and Cloud results show that it is monetizing AI through multiple channels. They do not establish a market-wide conversion problem, how many free Gemini users become subscribers, or whether limiting access to a model makes an individual more likely to pay.

For users, the practical question is narrower: whether the model and usage allowance currently available on a free or Plus account are enough for their needs. For Google, the reported shift may be part of a broader effort to package model access and other AI features into paid products, but the exact free-versus-Plus allocation remains uncertain until Google’s live policy and account-level access confirm it.
