Google’s AMIE conversational AI has been evaluated prospectively in a real primary-care clinic, where it took patients’ histories by text before appointments and supplied potential diagnoses for discussion with clinicians. The single-center study offers early evidence about feasibility—not proof that AMIE is ready for routine or unsupervised clinical use.
What the Lancet study tested
AMIE, short for Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer, is Google’s research AI system for clinical reasoning and conversation. In collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), researchers evaluated it in an academic ambulatory primary-care clinic. The study was prospective, single-arm, preregistered, and approved by an institutional review board.
Before appointments, patients used a text chat with AMIE to describe their health concerns. The system took a history and presented potential diagnoses for patients to discuss with their provider. Researchers assessed conversational safety and quality, patient and clinician experience, and clinical reasoning in comparison with primary-care providers. Google describes the work as an early transition from simulated encounters to assessment in a real clinical workflow.

Google Research’s study overview describes the research and its publication in The Lancet. The publication abstract characterizes it as a feasibility study in an ambulatory primary-care clinic.

How many patients took part?
Google’s October 8, 2026 publication announcement says 98 patients consulted AMIE ahead of urgent-care visits. The Google Research abstract reports that 100 adult patients completed an AMIE text-chat interaction up to five days before an appointment. The official summaries give different counts and do not explain the discrepancy, so they should be treated as source-specific figures rather than interchangeable totals.
What the study reported
Safety supervision
Google reports that human safety supervisors monitored every patient-AMIE interaction in real time. Under predefined criteria, supervisors did not need to intervene to stop any consultation. That is a finding about interventions observed under this study’s protocol; it does not establish that the system is safe in every setting or without supervision.

Clinician views of the summaries
In Google’s announcement, clinicians said AMIE’s summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half of cases. These are reported clinician assessments in this study, not evidence that the summaries improved patient outcomes.

The announcement and abstract report that the final diagnosis appeared somewhere in AMIE’s differential diagnosis in 90% of cases. The abstract also reports 75% top-three accuracy. These figures describe different measures: the 90% figure means the final diagnosis was included among the possibilities AMIE listed, while top-three accuracy measures whether it ranked among the first three. Neither means AMIE independently made a definitive diagnosis.

What these results do—and do not—show
The findings suggest that a pre-visit conversational AI workflow could be studied in a working clinic and that clinicians saw potential value in the summaries. But this was a feasibility evaluation at one academic center, not a broad effectiveness trial. The reported figures cannot establish that AMIE improves health outcomes, generalizes to other hospitals or patient populations, or performs similarly across conditions and workflows.
Google says larger clinical trials are needed. Its AMIE project overview separately describes a nationwide randomized study with Included Health as ongoing research; that is distinct from the BIDMC study and has no results reported here. Google’s announcement captures the cautious outlook: “While larger clinical trials are needed to assess patient-facing AI at scale, the findings suggest the potential for AI to enhance the patient-physician relationship and ease the strain on healthcare workers.”
