For most holiday purchases, the best date depends on whether you value the lowest price or the widest selection. Google’s 2026 When to Buy Guide finds that fragrance deals usually peak in the first two weeks after Black Friday, handbags offer a useful compromise in mid-December, travel accessories are strongest around Black Friday, large suitcases can reach their lowest prices in late-December clearance, and electronic toys may be marked down most heavily in the final weeks before Christmas.
These are estimates based on historical U.S. merchant promotions, Google Search trends and discount data—not guarantees. Prices, inventory and shipping conditions change each year.

The guide’s central warning is that a lower percentage discount is not always the best outcome if the item you need disappears or cannot arrive before the holiday.
Why these dates are estimates, not promises
Google says its new guide “uses Google Search and discount data to show when holiday deals peak.” The analysis reflects historical behavior among U.S. merchants and patterns from the previous holiday season. Retailers can change promotion calendars, quantities and prices without following the historical curve.

Use each recommendation as a starting point, then check the live product page. A deal that looks attractive should be evaluated on four separate axes:
- Discount depth: Is the current price meaningfully below the item’s usual level?
- Selection: Are the required size, color, scent or model still in stock?
- Delivery: Can the retailer deliver before your event, including a buffer for delays?
- Price confidence: Does recent history show that the current price is unusually low?
Best time to buy each category
Fragrance: buy soon after Black Friday
Google reports that fragrance discounts do not typically increase as Christmas approaches. Deal volume drops sharply later in December, so waiting for a final-week bargain may leave you with fewer scents, sizes or gift sets without producing a lower price. If you know the recipient’s preferred product, the first two weeks after Black Friday are the more defensible buying window.

Handbags: target mid-December
Handbags have a more gradual trade-off. Mid-December is expected to balance a strong discount with a reasonable selection. Late-December clearance can lower the price further, but it applies to whatever inventory remains. Wait only if you are flexible about style, color and brand; otherwise, mid-December reduces the risk of settling for an unwanted design.
Travel accessories and packing cubes: shop around Black Friday
Google identifies Black Friday as the strongest period for travel accessories, including packing cubes. These products are often sold in sets, so compare the number and size of pieces rather than relying only on the headline percentage. Buying earlier also leaves time to replace a missing piece or return an unsuitable set.

Large suitcases: wait for late-December clearance when price is the priority
Large luggage may receive its deepest markdowns in late December as retailers clear seasonal inventory. This strategy suits shoppers who can accept limited colors, shell materials or wheel configurations. If you have a trip soon, the lower clearance price may not justify the risk of unavailable stock or delayed delivery.
Electronic toys: monitor the final weeks, but protect delivery time
Electronic toys may see their steepest reductions in the final weeks of December. The timing is useful for post-peak inventory clearance, but it is risky for gifts needed on a fixed date. Check the retailer’s stated shipping cutoff, account for weekends and carrier delays, and switch to an in-store purchase if delivery can no longer be guaranteed.

How to check whether a deal is genuinely low
Google Shopping’s price-insights feature can show U.S. shoppers whether a product’s current price is low, typical or high, display recent changes and identify a 30-day low. The typical-price assessment uses seller information gathered across the web. Google explicitly says this indicator does not predict how the price will change in the future, so it should inform a decision—not serve as a forecast.

- Review the price-insights label and recent price movement.
- Confirm that shipping, membership requirements, taxes and return terms do not erase the apparent saving.
- Compare the current stock and delivery date with your deadline.
- Buy when the price is acceptable and the required version is available; do not wait solely for a theoretical lower price.
What broader shopping data says about holiday timing
Google’s 2024 shopping coverage reported that 45% of Americans had started holiday shopping, while most had completed only about one-third of their purchases, according to Google/Ipsos. That pattern describes a long, staggered season rather than one universal shopping day.

The same coverage said Google’s Shopping Graph contained more than 45 billion product listings in 2024. A large catalog makes price and availability checks useful, but it also means that a similar-looking item may not be the same model or bundle. Verify specifications before comparing prices.
Consumers also told Google/Ipsos in a 2023 Buyer’s Remorse Survey that supporting local and/or small businesses was important to 84% of respondents. If that matters to you, include local stock and pickup options in the comparison; a slightly higher price may buy certainty and avoid shipping risk.
A practical buy-now-or-wait decision
Buy now when
- The guide’s recommended window is open and the needed variant is in stock.
- The price-insights label shows a low price or a clear recent reduction.
- You have a firm gift or travel deadline that leaves little delivery buffer.
Wait when
- You are buying a large suitcase or an electronic toy and can tolerate reduced selection.
- The item is non-urgent and the current price is rated typical or high.
- You can use store pickup or another backup if a late promotion sells out online.
Google’s guide is most useful as a category-specific calendar. Combine its historical timing with the product’s live price history, inventory and delivery promise, then choose the point where the total risk—not just the discount percentage—is acceptable.
