Googlebook can run Linux command-line apps now, and Google’s current instructions also support launching graphical Linux apps in a separate graphics screen from Terminal. The experience is not yet fully integrated: Google lists app-launcher integration and several other Linux improvements as future work, without delivery dates. Meanwhile, the product launch puts Gemini and other AI features prominently alongside Android apps, desktop Chrome, and developer tools.
Can Googlebook run Linux apps?
Yes. Google documents a Debian Linux command-line environment accessed through the Terminal app. On first use, you install a virtual machine (VM) image. Command-line applications run in Terminal; graphical applications open in an alternative graphics screen accessed from Terminal. That is more than command-line-only support, but it is not the same as having Linux apps appear in the regular app launcher.
Google’s current Terminal instructions describe the workflow. They establish that the environment and launch paths exist; they do not guarantee that every Linux package will work, or establish performance and reliability for a particular app or device.
How to install and launch Linux apps
- Open the Terminal app. On first use, choose the option to install the Linux VM image and complete setup.
- Update the package lists and installed packages by running
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y. - Install a package with
sudo apt install -yfollowed by its package name or names. Google’s examples include git, Python, pip, and Node.js. - Launch command-line software in Terminal. Launch graphical software from Terminal; it opens in the alternative graphics screen.
For example, the documented package-install pattern is sudo apt install -y git. Package availability and compatibility depend on the software and device configuration, so check the app’s own Linux installation guidance when an install fails.

Give Linux access to files
You can grant the VM access to local folders through shared-folder settings. The Files app can also browse VM files. This makes file exchange possible without assuming that every local folder is automatically visible inside Linux.
Adjust VM settings or remove Linux
Google documents advanced settings for display resolution, memory size, keep-awake behavior, and console type. The Help Center also describes uninstalling the VM image and an option to back up data. Before removing the image, use the backup option if you need to preserve files in the VM.

What Google says is still coming
In an October 13 post, Cyrus Stoller, Google’s Group Product Manager for Laptops & Tablets, described Linux Terminal as a preview and said the team was working toward Linux GUI apps integrated directly into the app launcher. Stoller also identified USB passthrough and ADB over USB, dynamic VM memory and storage scaling, GPU/NPU acceleration, and VM persistence separate from the Terminal window as areas of future work. The post gives no delivery dates, so these should be treated as roadmap items, not features already available or scheduled for a particular release. Read Stoller’s roadmap post.

Why the launch feels focused on AI
Google’s launch announcement emphasizes Gemini, Rambler, and Create My Widget. It also presents Googlebook as a laptop platform with Android apps, desktop Chrome, Antigravity, and Linux developer tools—not as an AI-only device. “All about AI” is therefore a characterization of the launch emphasis, rather than a statement that ordinary computing or Linux functionality is absent. See Google’s product announcement.
The same announcement lists initial devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo and a starting price of $899. Google also cites up to 2.8K OLED displays, dedicated NPUs rated at over 45 TOPS, up to 14 hours of battery life, 12 months of Google AI Pro, and up to 10 years of Googlebook OS updates. These are company-published figures, not independent test results; check the particular model, region, and current offer before relying on them. Google says the AI Pro offer includes 5TB of cloud storage and higher Gemini usage limits, and lists three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop, and more among launch offers; bundle terms and eligibility can vary.

Is Googlebook ready for your Linux workload?
For command-line development and experimentation, the documented Debian VM provides a clear starting workflow. If you depend on Linux graphical apps, decide based on whether launching them through Terminal and using a separate graphics screen fits your work; app-launcher integration remains a roadmap item. Likewise, consider whether your workflow needs USB devices, ADB over USB, adjustable resource allocation, acceleration, or a VM that persists independently of Terminal, since Google lists those as future improvements rather than current capabilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore choosing a specific laptop, confirm that the model is currently sold in your region and check its processor architecture, memory, storage, display, price, and availability against the software you intend to run. The published information does not establish which Googlebook model is best for Linux development, and there are no performance benchmarks here to support a model ranking.
