If a Google Wifi point won’t connect, first check whether the primary point has power and a working Ethernet connection to your modem. Then determine whether the problem is your internet service, Google Home setup, or the mesh link to an additional point. Restart before considering a factory reset: resetting erases device settings and requires setup again.

First, identify which point is failing

The primary Google Wifi point connects to your modem by Ethernet and needs working internet service. Additional points join the existing mesh wirelessly or through a wired connection, so their connection depends on the primary point and their placement. Google Wifi requires both a modem and internet service (Google Wifi overview; Google setup guide).

Match the symptom to the stage of connection. “Problem connecting” or “Something went wrong” during setup points toward setup or phone discovery; “Wifi point out of range” suggests a mesh placement problem. A “Connection issue” can have more than one cause, so check power, internet, and the light before changing settings. These are Google Home setup error messages, not definitive diagnoses (Google setup troubleshooting).

Check power, modem, and the primary point’s cable

  • Confirm the modem and the point are powered on.
  • For the primary point, check that the Ethernet cable is firmly connected at both ends: to the modem and to the point’s WAN port. A loose, disconnected, or damaged cable can prevent setup.
  • Confirm that the modem is connected to your provider’s incoming service. A powered modem alone does not prove that the internet connection is working.

If the cable is visibly damaged or will not seat securely, address that connection first. An Ethernet cable is relevant here because this is the primary point’s modem link; it is not a general fix for an additional point that connects wirelessly. See Google’s setup troubleshooting steps.

Google Wifi - AC1200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 1500 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
  • Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
  • Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
  • Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
  • Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want

Find out whether the internet service is down

  1. Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Turn off cellular data on that device so it cannot silently use the mobile network instead.
  3. Try to reach the internet. If no device can get online, contact your internet service provider to ask about an outage.

If other devices can access the internet, the provider connection is less likely to be the issue; investigate the Google Wifi point, its settings, or its connection to the mesh. Google recommends checking another device on the same network as part of its connection troubleshooting guidance.

Check setup requirements and device compatibility

Google’s setup guide lists a Google Account, the latest Google Home app, internet service, and a modem as requirements. It lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later for the phone or tablet used to set up Google Wifi. The primary point must connect to a working modem with internet (Google setup guide).

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
  1. Force close Google Home, then reopen it.
  2. If the problem continues, reinstall Google Home.
  3. Forget nearby saved Wi-Fi networks on the phone or tablet, restart the Wifi device, and try setup again.
  4. Try a different phone or tablet. Sign in on it with the same Google Account used for the setup.

These steps target app and device discovery; they will not fix a provider outage or an additional point that is physically too far from the mesh. Google lists them in its setup troubleshooting guide.

Read the status light for your exact model

Google Wifi and Nest Wifi use different light meanings. Check the model before interpreting the color or pattern; do not apply Nest Wifi point meanings to Google Wifi hardware.

Improve an additional point’s mesh connection

If the primary point works but an additional point will not join or reports “Wifi point out of range,” adjust its position. Google recommends starting at the router and placing the additional point about halfway toward the area that needs coverage, no more than two rooms away from the router or another point. Choose an open area and avoid physical obstructions.

  • It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]

After setup, run a mesh test in Google Home. If the result is poor, move the point and test again. The mesh test can help distinguish a placement issue from an app-discovery problem. See Google’s point placement guidance and setup guide.

Restart the point before you reset it

A restart preserves network settings. Google’s power-cycle procedure is to unplug the device for 10–20 seconds, reconnect power, and wait 1–2 minutes for it to start. You can also use Google Home to restart the whole network or an individual point. Follow Google’s restart instructions.

Use a factory reset only if the preceding checks do not resolve the issue—for example, when a previously configured point must be cleared before setup on another network. A reset erases settings and data on the device, can interrupt internet service, takes several minutes, and means setting up the router and points again. For a Google Wifi point, Google’s physical-button procedure says to hold the button for 10 seconds until the specified light change; the process can take up to 10 minutes. Do not unplug the point during the reset. Follow the current factory-reset instructions for the exact device.

When to contact Google or your ISP

  • Contact your ISP if other devices on the same Wi-Fi cannot reach the internet with cellular data turned off.
  • Contact Google Wifi support if setup still fails after the checks above, or if a Google Wifi point remains without a light or shows red after troubleshooting.

Google’s setup troubleshooting page recommends contacting support when setup remains unsuccessful.
