For Google Wallet in-store payments, the settings worth checking first are a supported screen lock, payment verification, and the transit-only option that can skip verification. If your phone goes missing, Google also provides a way to find, lock, or erase it. Menu labels vary across Android devices, so treat the paths below as Google’s documented routes and check your manufacturer’s instructions if yours differ.
1. Set a supported screen lock
Google says a screen lock must be set up to make secure payments with Google Wallet. Wallet payment verification supports a PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric unlock. Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics, as well as Smart Unlock or Knock to Unlock, do not qualify for this verification; use a supported method instead. Google may ask you to verify again after a timeout, so a prompt is not necessarily required for every payment.
Google’s documented Android route is Settings → Security → Device unlock → Screen lock. Depending on your Android version or phone maker, the labels may differ. Choose an available lock method that Wallet supports. Google’s screen-lock setup instructions explain the prerequisite, and its purchase-verification guidance describes supported verification methods.

2. Decide whether to skip verification for transit
Google Wallet has a transit-specific option that can let you pay for transit while the phone remains locked. It is a convenience trade-off: turning it off removes the verification step for eligible transit payments, while other payments still require screen-lock verification. Some transit systems do not support skipping verification.

To review the control, Google documents this route in Wallet: Profile picture or account → Wallet settings → Security → Verification settings → Transit payments. Turn off Verification required only if you want the transit exception. The option’s availability depends on the transit system. See Google’s verification settings guidance.
3. Know what to do if the phone is lost or stolen
Use Google’s Find and secure a lost Android device flow to locate, lock, or erase the phone. Google says erasing removes payment information from that device. A locked device cannot be used to make in-store purchases because payment verification is required. These steps address the device and its Wallet payment information; they do not, by themselves, establish that the underlying bank card has been canceled.

If you see a charge you believe is unauthorized, Google advises reporting it within 120 days of the transaction date. That is Google’s guidance, not a universal deadline for every card issuer or a statement of legal requirements. Contact your bank or card issuer as appropriate.

Wallet payments depend on more than the security settings. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to check that the phone supports NFC, Google Wallet is the default payment app, a screen lock is set, the device meets security requirements, and the phone is unlocked before payment. Follow Google’s steps for fixing contactless payment issues if a tap does not work.

5. Verify a newly added card through your bank
If Wallet asks you to verify a card, the code comes from your bank, not Google Wallet. Available verification methods vary by country or region and may include options provided by the bank. Follow the in-app instructions; if a code fails or does not arrive, contact the card issuer. Google explains the process in its card verification instructions.
