Google Wallet does not sync every pass in the same way. Google lists loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes as items saved to your Google Account; after you sign in, those passes can appear on multiple devices. Payment cards, transit passes, identity credentials, badges, keys and some private passes may instead be tied to one device and require a supported transfer, backup restore or manual re-addition. A factory reset removes Wallet data from that phone, so check each important item before erasing or replacing the device.
What “saved” means in Google Wallet
Wallet uses two broad connection models. An item can be connected to your Google Account, or it can be connected primarily to a particular device. The distinction determines whether signing in on another phone is enough, whether a transfer tool is required, or whether you must obtain the pass again from its issuer.
Google’s current help guidance names loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes as account-saved examples. These can be stored on multiple devices at the same time. Signing in to the same Google Account on a replacement phone can therefore bring them back without a separate “move” operation, subject to issuer, country and device support.
Google also gives examples that do not automatically appear merely because you signed in: payment cards, transit passes, mobile driver’s licenses, ID passes, student IDs, corporate badges, digital car keys, residential keys and private passes. “Not automatic” does not mean “never transferable.” The available route depends on the particular item and issuer, and may involve a device-to-device transfer, a cloud backup restore, removal from the old phone, or adding it again through the issuer.

Google describes these as current examples rather than a promise covering every issuer or future Wallet release. Availability also varies by country or region; Google directs users to the item’s issuer and its item-specific information for details.
Which Wallet items sync, and which need a move?
| Item or category | What Google says about storage | What to expect on a new phone |
|---|---|---|
| Loyalty cards | Google lists these among passes saved to a Google Account and usable on multiple devices. | Sign in to the same account; verify the card and barcode before relying on it. |
| Gift cards | Listed as account-saved and eligible for multi-device storage. | They may return after sign-in, but issuer rules and regional availability still apply. |
| Event tickets | Listed as account-saved; can appear on multiple devices. | Look for the ticket after sign-in and confirm its event, date and barcode. |
| Boarding passes | Listed as account-saved; can be stored on multiple devices. | Sign in, then check that the pass is current. An issuer may issue a replacement or update separately. |
| Payment cards | Google gives these as an example of items that do not automatically follow account sign-in. | Use the supported transfer or restore flow, or add and verify the card again. |
| Transit passes | Not automatically restored by sign-in in Google’s examples; supported cards can be moved, and a pass is limited to one device at a time. | Use Wallet’s move option where offered. Preserve stored value before erasing the old phone. |
| IDs, licenses and student IDs | Examples of device-connected credentials. | Follow the credential’s supported transfer or re-enrollment process; do not assume a backup contains it. |
| Corporate badges and private passes | Examples of items that may be device-bound. | Contact the issuing organization if Wallet does not provide a transfer route. |
| Digital car and residential keys | Examples of device-connected keys. | Use the manufacturer or property’s supported re-pairing process before wiping the old phone. |
The table describes Google’s named categories, not an exhaustive guarantee for every product. The issuer, pass configuration, region, Android release and Wallet version can change the result.
How transfer and restore actually differ
Account sign-in
Account-saved passes can return when you sign in on another device. This is synchronization of the Wallet item’s account connection, not a copy of every piece of secure device data. If a pass does not belong to Google’s account-saved group, a successful sign-in alone may leave it absent.

Device-to-device transfer
Some items can be moved while both phones are available. Google’s transfer guidance describes supported in-Wallet routes. Follow the prompts for the specific card or pass; do not remove the old device first unless Wallet or the issuer tells you to.
Cloud backup restore
A phone backup can restore supported Wallet data during setup of a replacement device. Backup coverage is item-specific, so a completed Android restore is not proof that every credential, key or transit balance returned.
Manual re-addition
Items outside the supported automatic or restore paths must be added again. That may mean scanning a barcode, opening the original issuer email or app, requesting a new credential, or completing identity and payment-card verification. Some single-device items require you to remove them from the old phone before the issuer will add them to the new one.

More than one device
Some account-saved passes can remain on several devices, so there is nothing to “transfer.” Transit passes illustrate the opposite: Google says a transit pass can be saved to only one device at a time, and supported passes are moved from within Wallet.

What to do before replacing or resetting your phone
- Inventory important items. Open Wallet and list payment cards, transit cards with stored value, tickets, IDs, badges, keys, loyalty cards and gift cards. Do not rely on a single category rule.
- Check the issuer. Open the pass details and note the issuer’s transfer, re-enrollment or recovery instructions. Regional and issuer support can override the general Wallet behavior.
- Move one-device items first. For a supported transit card or other pass, use Wallet’s transfer command while the old phone is still usable. If the issuer requires deletion from the old phone, complete that step only after recording any needed account or recovery information.
- Confirm backup coverage. Ensure the phone’s Google backup is current, but treat backup as a recovery aid rather than a guarantee for secure credentials, keys or stored-value cards.
- Sign in on the replacement phone. Use the same Google Account and wait for account-saved loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes to appear.
- Re-add what did not return. Use the issuer’s app, email or website, or Wallet’s add flow. Complete verification and test the barcode, tap-to-pay card, ticket or credential before wiping the old phone.
- Check real-world usability. Open a barcode, ticket or boarding pass; confirm a transit balance; and verify that keys, badges and IDs are recognized. A pass listed in Wallet is not necessarily ready for use until its issuer completes activation.
- Only then erase the old phone. Sign out or remove Wallet items as required by the issuer, then perform the factory reset.
What a factory reset deletes
Google says a factory reset deletes Wallet data from that device. Most items can be restored through supported device-to-device or cloud methods; account-connected items return after you sign in; anything not covered by those methods must be manually re-added. The reset itself does not create a universal cloud copy of every pass.
Phones running Android 15 or later display a reminder to back up transit passes with stored value before a factory reset, according to Google’s help page. Treat that reminder as a prompt to use the supported backup or transfer process, not as evidence that every transit system can be recovered automatically.

If the old phone is already lost, broken or wiped, recovery depends on the item. Account-saved passes may reappear after sign-in. A payment card may require verification or re-addition. A transit card, identity credential, badge or key may require the issuer, transport agency, employer, school, vehicle manufacturer or property manager to restore access.

Google Wallet can automatically save supported information from Gmail. To use it, enable Gmail smart features in other Google products, then turn on Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail in Wallet. The exact menu wording can vary as Google rolls settings out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurning that Wallet setting off prevents future Gmail passes from being saved; it does not remove items already saved. Google says a pass already stored in Wallet remains even if the related email is deleted. Therefore, deleting an airline or event email is not a Wallet cleanup method, and retaining the email is not a substitute for checking whether the pass is account-saved or device-bound. See Google’s Wallet item management instructions.

Using Wallet passes on a Wear OS watch
Some passes added on a phone can appear automatically on a synced Wear OS watch. Google lists eligible loyalty cards, gift cards and tickets as supported examples. Its cited support page currently specifies Wear OS 3.5 or newer and Wallet app version 23.46.x or above; these are time-sensitive requirements and may change.
- Expired passes do not appear.
- Some private passes, such as health insurance cards, remain phone-only.
- The watch may need an internet or mobile-data connection before a pass appears.
- A pass being visible on the phone does not guarantee watch eligibility.
If a pass is missing, update the watch and Wallet where available, check connectivity, confirm that the pass is not expired or private, and verify that the phone and watch are actually synced. Google’s watch-pass support page lists the current conditions.
Linked and recommended passes
Google says issuers may link related non-private passes, such as a boarding pass with an event ticket, loyalty card, gift card or offer. Users cannot create these links themselves, and not every issuer creates them. Payment cards, private passes and physical-access passes are excluded from this linked-pass grouping. A linked recommendation is an organizational convenience, not evidence that the underlying pass has a different backup or transfer status.

Privacy and personalization settings are separate from syncing
Wallet includes controls for Gmail auto-save, use of passes across Google services, and use of Wallet information for personalization or advertising. Google says these settings are rolling out gradually and that private passes are handled differently. A personalization or advertising choice does not determine whether a technically device-bound item can be transferred. Check the controls currently shown in your own Wallet app and read Google’s data and privacy guidance.
A quick decision test for any pass
- Is it one of Google’s account-saved examples? Try signing in on the new device.
- Does Wallet identify it as a transit, payment, ID, badge, key or private item? Expect a transfer, restore or issuer process rather than automatic sync.
- Can it hold value or unlock something? Move or re-enroll it before wiping the old phone.
- Is the issuer, country or device supported? Check the issuer and Google’s item-specific availability information.
- Is the destination a watch? Check eligibility, Wear OS and Wallet versions, expiry and connectivity.
In short, Google Wallet is a mixture of account-saved passes and device-protected credentials. Treat every important item according to its type and issuer, and verify it on the replacement device before resetting the old one.
