Google Wallet can do more than store payment cards. These ten tips help you add eligible passes, reach them faster, use transit features correctly, and avoid surprises when changing devices. Availability depends on your country or region, device, issuer, and transit provider; check Google’s overview of what you can use Google Wallet for and the relevant provider’s support before relying on a feature.
1. Turn on Gmail auto-save for eligible passes
Wallet can save eligible loyalty cards, event tickets, train tickets, and boarding passes from Gmail. To enable it, open Google Wallet, tap your profile picture, choose Settings, then turn on Smart features and personalization in other Google products and Auto save passes. The Gmail account and settings must be configured for the feature, and not every email or pass qualifies. See Google’s instructions for adding items to Wallet.
2. Use the issuer’s Add to Google Wallet button
When a ticket, card, or pass provider offers an Add to Google Wallet button in its app, website, or message, use that route. It can add the item directly to Wallet when the issuer supports it. You can also add supported item types from Wallet itself. The available items depend on the issuer and location; Google lists supported categories in its Wallet item guidance.

Payment cards
To change payment-card order, open Google Wallet, tap your profile picture, select Settings, then Edit card order. Arrange cards so the one you expect to use most is easiest to reach.

Other passes
In the Wallet app, touch and hold a pass, then drag it to the position you want. This changes the order in your Wallet view; it does not change which payment card is the default. Google explains both options in its Wallet overview.
4. Check recent tap-to-pay activity from a card
Open the payment card in Wallet and select View more transactions to see recent tap-to-pay activity associated with it. This view is not a complete statement for every card: Google directs U.S. American Express users to their statement or the American Express app for full transaction history. Consult the issuer when you need a complete record or need to resolve a charge. See Google’s Wallet overview.

5. Let Wallet add linked passes, or switch that off
An issuer may link related non-private passes so they appear together in Wallet. You cannot create these links yourself. To control whether eligible linked passes are added automatically, open Google Wallet, tap your profile picture, choose Settings, and adjust Automatically add linked passes. If a linked pass is missing, the issuer may not have linked it, or the pass may not qualify. Google’s linked-pass guidance explains the feature and its limits.

On some supported transit systems, you can tap your phone at the reader without waking it or opening Wallet. Other systems require you to unlock the phone and select the transit pass first. Watch for the reader’s response and follow the transit agency’s instructions or attendant guidance if the tap fails. The behavior is system-specific; check Google’s transit payment instructions and your agency’s rules.

7. Check Transit Insights for fare progress
In participating regions, Transit Insights can show trip and activity details, savings, and progress toward available discounts or fare capping. The feature relies on using the linked payment card for transit; the Transit Insights card itself is not a payment method. Fare discounts and caps are set by the transit agency, so the information and benefits depend on that agency and the region. See Google’s Transit Insights guidance for eligibility and setup.
8. Set a default card on a compatible watch for express pay
Watch payments require a watch with NFC, Wear OS 2.0 or later, a supported card, and support in your region. Express-pay availability has additional requirements and may depend on the watch and rollout, so a compatible phone or watch does not guarantee that every card or feature is available.

- Open Google Wallet on the watch and add a supported payment card.
- Choose the card you want to use by default for eligible watch payments.
- Check Google’s Wear OS Wallet requirements and your issuer’s support details before depending on express pay.
Phone Wallet use is separate: you do not need a smartwatch to use supported Wallet features on a phone.
9. Check which pass a watch uses for transit
When you tap a watch for transit express pay, an existing transit pass takes precedence over the default payment card. If you intend to pay with a card instead, check which transit pass is stored on the watch and the system’s accepted payment methods before tapping. In San Francisco, a Clipper pass requires opening Wallet on the watch before tapping; it does not follow the usual tap-without-opening flow. Google documents these exceptions in its transit guidance.

10. Review transfer and privacy settings before changing devices
Know what follows your Google Account
Some passes are tied to the device and may not automatically reappear when you move to another phone. Account-linked loyalty and gift cards, event tickets, and boarding passes may appear across devices. Transit passes have separate transfer rules, so check the transit provider’s instructions before removing Wallet or changing phones. Google’s transfer guidance describes item-specific behavior.
Protect transit passes before clearing data
Deleting a transit pass or clearing Wallet app data can remove stored transit information. Confirm the pass can be recovered or transferred before resetting a phone or reinstalling the app. For the factory-reset case, see Google’s Wallet transfer and recovery guidance.
Manage pass activity separately from payment controls
Pass activity and personalization controls are distinct from payment-method settings. Private passes are handled differently from linked non-private passes. Review Wallet’s pass-data controls if you want to change how eligible passes are used or surfaced; manage payment cards separately in Wallet settings. Google describes pass-data handling in its linked-pass and privacy guidance.
