Google updated NotebookLM on August 25, 2025, expanding standard Video Overviews to more than 80 languages and making non-English Audio Overviews more comprehensive. The feature creates a narrated visual summary from notebook sources, but current documentation limits multilingual narration to the Explainer format; Cinematic and Short Video Overviews remain English-only.
The announcement is important, but it should not be mistaken for a new August 2026 launch. NotebookLM has since added additional video formats and visual upgrades, while the original multilingual capability remains most useful for source-based study aids, research briefings, and first-pass explanations.
Key takeaways
- Google announced the NotebookLM Video Overview expansion on August 25, 2025, bringing standard Video Overviews to more than 80 languages.
- The current multilingual option is the Explainer format; Google’s help documentation lists Cinematic and Short Video Overviews as English-only.
- Video Overviews combine notebook sources with AI-generated narration, text, illustrations, and other visuals, but Google warns that narration and visuals can contain inaccuracies and audio glitches.
- Generation runs in the background and can take more than 30 minutes, so Video Overviews are not dependable last-minute presentation generators.
- Users need edit access to a notebook to generate or delete a Video Overview, and availability can vary by country, account type, age, mobile platform, and Workspace administrator settings.
What did Google announce about NotebookLM Video Overviews in 80 languages?
Google announced on August 25, 2025, that NotebookLM’s standard Video Overviews were becoming globally available in more than 80 languages. Google also announced that Audio Overviews in those languages were moving beyond short highlights toward longer, more connected discussions of notebook sources.

The rollout began on August 25, 2025, and Google said it would continue globally during the following week. The original announcement is documented in Google’s announcement about multilingual Audio and Video Overviews.
What is a NotebookLM Video Overview?
A NotebookLM Video Overview is an AI-generated narrated presentation based on the sources in a NotebookLM notebook. The presentation can combine spoken narration, on-screen text, illustrations, and other visuals to explain material collected from sources such as PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs, and Google Slides.
NotebookLM is designed to work from the sources in a notebook rather than generate a completely unconstrained video from a short text prompt. Source grounding can make the result more relevant to the uploaded material, but source grounding does not guarantee factual accuracy. Google’s documentation warns that Video Overviews can contain inaccuracies in both narration and visuals, as well as audio glitches. See Google’s current Video Overview help documentation for the supported formats and warnings.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How is a Video Overview different from NotebookLM chat and Audio Overview?
NotebookLM’s tools produce different kinds of source-based output, so a Video Overview should not be treated as a replacement for every NotebookLM feature.
| NotebookLM feature | What it produces | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Answers to questions about notebook sources, with inline citations | Checking a detail, comparing sources, or asking focused follow-up questions |
| Audio Overview | A spoken discussion or summary of notebook sources | Listening to a source-based explanation while studying or reviewing |
| Video Overview | A narrated visual presentation using source-based content | Getting a presentation-style visual explanation of a bounded source set |
| Cinematic Video Overview | A more immersive video format with richer generated visuals | English-language visual storytelling when the account and format are eligible |
| Short Video Overview | A brief video overview of approximately 60 seconds | A rapid English-language concept summary with less depth |
The current help documentation distinguishes the multilingual Explainer format from the newer Cinematic and Short formats. A later Google announcement introduced Cinematic Video Overviews on March 4, 2026, using Gemini 3, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo 3; the launch was initially for English-speaking Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 or older on web and mobile. The Cinematic Video Overview announcement should therefore be read as a later development, not as evidence that every NotebookLM video format supports 80-plus languages.
Which languages does NotebookLM support for Video Overviews?
The current Google help page lists more than 80 narration languages for the Explainer format. The list includes language variants rather than treating every regional form as one identical option.

Use “80+ languages” unless you are specifically discussing the language list in the current documentation. Google distinguishes Canadian French from European French, Brazilian Portuguese from Portugal Portuguese, and European, Latin American, and Mexican Spanish. The complete list is available in Google’s current supported-language documentation.

Does “80 languages” mean the interface, source processing, and narration all support the same languages?
No. NotebookLM’s interface language, its general AI output language, the languages it can process in sources, and the languages available for Video Overview narration are related but not identical categories.
Google’s education materials describe NotebookLM as supporting source processing and Audio and Video Overviews in more than 80 languages. The Video Overview help page separately identifies the languages available for the Explainer narration control. Users should not infer that every NotebookLM function, interface label, or newer video format is available in exactly the same set of languages. Google’s NotebookLM education page provides the broader product positioning, while the help page provides the more specific format list.
How do you generate a multilingual NotebookLM Video Overview?
You can generate a multilingual Video Overview from the NotebookLM web interface by selecting the Explainer format and choosing the narration language during generation.
- Open an existing NotebookLM notebook or create a new notebook.
- Add sources such as PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs, or Google Slides.
- Confirm that you have edit access to the notebook. Google says edit access is required to generate or delete a Video Overview.
- Open the Studio panel and select Video Overview.
- Choose Explainer if you need multilingual narration. Select the language, visual style, and any available custom instructions.
- Select Generate.
- Wait for NotebookLM to generate the video in the background.
- Review the completed video against the underlying sources before using it for teaching, research, publication, or distribution.
- Download or share the result when the content and permissions are appropriate.
The exact controls can vary as Google updates NotebookLM, but the current workflow and format options are described in Google’s Video Overview instructions.
How do you change NotebookLM’s default output language?
NotebookLM can use the preferred language in the user’s Google Account as the default output language. Users can also change the output language in NotebookLM settings or select a language directly while generating a Video Overview.
To troubleshoot an unexpected language, check NotebookLM’s Settings → Output Language, verify the preferred language in the Google Account, and then select the desired language explicitly in the Video Overview controls. Google documents the language preference behavior in its NotebookLM output-language settings guide.
What is the difference between Explainer, Cinematic, and Short Video Overviews?
The Explainer format is the practical choice for multilingual source summaries because the current documentation lists it as supporting 80-plus narration languages. Cinematic and Short are newer formats with different availability and language restrictions.

| Format | Best for | Language status | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explainer | Structured and relatively comprehensive summaries of notebook sources | 80+ supported narration languages | AI-generated narration and visuals require review |
| Cinematic | More immersive visual storytelling | English-only in the current help documentation | Availability can depend on age, plan, account, and rollout status |
| Short | A fast concept overview | English-only in the current help documentation | Approximately 60 seconds, so it provides less depth |
Visual-style customization can also have age restrictions and format-specific exclusions. If multilingual narration is the requirement, selecting Cinematic or Short can produce the wrong result even when the notebook itself contains non-English sources.

Is NotebookLM’s multilingual Video Overview feature free?
NotebookLM is available in supported countries and territories, but access and usage limits depend on factors such as the account type, country, age, mobile platform, and Workspace administrator settings. Google says most users with a business or school Google Account have access, but an organization can restrict or disable NotebookLM.
A paid Google AI plan is not automatically required for the multilingual Explainer feature. A paid plan may matter when a user reaches standard usage limits or wants expanded NotebookLM access. Google’s U.S. plans page listed the following prices during the research check on August 18, 2026:
| Plan | U.S. price checked August 18, 2026 | NotebookLM-related signal | Who may benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Plus | $9.99 per month | More NotebookLM access than the standard account, plus 2 TB of storage | Occasional students, educators, and families who also want broader Google AI access |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 per month | Expanded NotebookLM access, plus 5 TB of storage | Frequent researchers, educators, students, and professionals using several Google services |
| Google AI Ultra | Higher tier; displayed price and offers can vary by market and promotion | Highest or near-highest access across Google AI products; Cinematic launched with Ultra eligibility | Heavy Google AI users, not people subscribing only for occasional multilingual Explainers |
Plan prices, benefits, regional availability, and usage limits are volatile. Check the current U.S. Google AI plans page before subscribing. Google’s general NotebookLM availability guidance is more relevant to whether an account can use the product at all.
How long does a NotebookLM Video Overview take to generate?
NotebookLM generates a Video Overview in the background, and Google says generation can take more than 30 minutes. The delay depends on the task and current service conditions, so users should not plan to create a reliable finished video immediately before a live meeting or class.
If generation appears to be taking a long time, leave the notebook and return later. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same request before checking whether a generation is already in progress, because repeated requests do not guarantee a faster result.
How accurate are multilingual Video Overviews?
Multilingual Video Overviews are useful first-pass explanations, not verified translations or authoritative replacements for the original sources. Google explicitly warns that both generated narration and visuals can contain inaccuracies and that audio glitches can occur.
Review the finished video against the source material, especially for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Names, places, technical terms, and proper nouns.
- Numbers, dates, formulas, units, and statistical claims.
- Quotations and wording that could change the meaning of a source.
- Translations of specialist, legal, medical, financial, or academic vocabulary.
- Visuals that may simplify, exaggerate, or incorrectly represent the source.
- Missing qualifications, exceptions, disagreements, or details that were present in the original material.
When terminology matters, improve the notebook before generating the video. Remove duplicated or contradictory sources, prefer authoritative documents, use consistent terms, and consider preparing a glossary or human-reviewed script for high-stakes material. This source-quality advice is a practical consequence of NotebookLM’s source-grounded design, not a Google guarantee that cleaner sources always produce accurate videos.

What can you use a multilingual Video Overview for?
NotebookLM’s multilingual Explainer format is a good fit when the task is to understand a bounded set of sources rather than produce a polished commercial video.
- Students: Review lecture notes, assigned PDFs, or research material in a preferred language.
- Educators: Create a preliminary visual explanation from approved course sources, followed by human checking.
- Researchers: Produce a first-pass briefing from papers, presentations, web pages, and supporting audio.
- Multilingual teams: Give colleagues an accessible overview of a shared source set before discussing details.
- Knowledge workers: Turn a bounded collection of documents into a presentation-style summary for internal orientation.
The result is best treated as a study aid or briefing draft. It is not necessarily a line-by-line translation, a complete lecture recording, or a faithful reproduction of every source detail.
When should you use another tool instead?
NotebookLM is the wrong primary tool when the job requires production control, guaranteed accuracy, or predictable rendering.

For general conversational analysis, ChatGPT may fit a different workflow. Organizations built around Microsoft 365 may compare Microsoft 365 Copilot, while users seeking designed and editable presentation videos may consider Adobe Express or Canva. These products are not direct replacements for NotebookLM’s source-grounded notebook model, and their current prices or feature parity should be checked separately.

The August 2025 language announcement is not the newest NotebookLM video update. The timeline matters because current Video Overview capabilities combine several later changes.
| Date | Change | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 | Google introduced Video Overviews in NotebookLM Studio, initially rolling out in English | Established the source-based narrated presentation feature |
| August 25, 2025 | Google announced Video Overviews in more than 80 languages and more detailed multilingual Audio Overviews | Made the standard multilingual Explainer workflow broadly useful |
| September 2025 | Google announced a visual upgrade using Nano Banana and a “Brief” format, with rollout beginning for Pro users and then expanding | Added newer visual-generation options to the Video Overview experience |
| March 4, 2026 | Google introduced Cinematic Video Overviews using Gemini 3, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo 3 | Added a more immersive format, initially English-only and restricted by plan and age eligibility |
The original English launch is described in Google’s July 2025 Video Overview announcement. The September visual changes are covered in Google’s Nano Banana Video Overview update.
Why is the Video Overview option missing?
A missing Video Overview control usually indicates an availability, permissions, source, platform, or format issue rather than proof that the feature has been removed.
- Try NotebookLM on the web instead of the mobile app, because mobile availability and controls can differ.
- Confirm that the notebook contains at least one usable source.
- Confirm that your account has edit access to the notebook.
- Check whether your country, account type, age, or Google Workspace administrator restricts the feature.
- Refresh or reopen the notebook, particularly if the feature is being introduced through a staged rollout.
- Check whether the selected format has additional restrictions. Cinematic, for example, can have English-language, age, and plan requirements.
Workspace administrators can manage NotebookLM availability for users. Review Google’s NotebookLM administrator guidance if the account belongs to an organization.

How do you fix the wrong language or mixed terminology?
Set the language explicitly in the Video Overview controls, check Settings → Output Language, verify the Google Account’s preferred language, and confirm that the requested language is listed for Explainer narration.
Do not select Cinematic or Short when multilingual narration is required, because the current documentation identifies those formats as English-only. If the result mixes languages or mishandles terminology, treat the problem as a quality-control issue: remove conflicting duplicates, use consistent terms, improve the source set, and review the generated narration manually. For high-stakes content, create a glossary or human-reviewed script before sharing.
What privacy and copyright issues should you consider?
Check your rights and confidentiality obligations before uploading documents or sharing a generated Video Overview. Having access to read a source does not automatically mean you have permission to redistribute the source material or a derivative presentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not upload confidential business, student, client, medical, legal, or unpublished research material without checking your organization’s policy and the applicable Google terms. Before publication, confirm both the rights to use the source documents and the rights to distribute the generated video.
Is NotebookLM’s multilingual Video Overview update worth using?
Yes, if you need a quick visual explanation of a bounded collection of documents and can review the result. The 80-plus-language Explainer expansion makes NotebookLM considerably more useful for multilingual study, research briefings, and internal knowledge sharing.
No, if you need a guaranteed translation, a polished marketing production, frame-accurate editing, advanced collaboration, or a finished video on a strict deadline. The strongest description is that NotebookLM is a multilingual, source-based briefing and study tool—not a fully reliable multilingual video-production suite.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can NotebookLM Video Overviews translate a document line by line?
No. A Video Overview is a source-based narrated summary, not a guaranteed line-by-line translation or complete reproduction of every source detail. Specialist terminology and important claims should be checked against the original material or reviewed by a qualified human.

No. Google’s current help documentation lists the Explainer format as supporting 80-plus narration languages, while Cinematic and Short Video Overviews are currently English-only. Availability can also depend on account, age, plan, platform, and rollout status.
Can a Google Workspace administrator disable NotebookLM Video Overviews?
Yes. NotebookLM availability can vary for business and school accounts, and Workspace administrators can restrict or turn off access. Users who cannot find the feature should check with their administrator as well as checking permissions, sources, platform, and region.
Should you publish a NotebookLM Video Overview without checking it?
No. Google warns that Video Overviews can contain inaccuracies in narration and visuals and can include audio glitches. Check names, numbers, dates, quotations, technical terms, translations, visual interpretations, omissions, and qualifications before distribution.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Google’s August 25, 2025 update brought standard NotebookLM Explainer Video Overviews to more than 80 languages and improved multilingual Audio Overviews. The capability is valuable for source-based study and briefing, but current users must distinguish Explainer from English-only Cinematic and Short formats, allow for generation times exceeding 30 minutes, and review every important claim before relying on or sharing the result.
