For a better Google TV Streamer (4K) setup, start with All settings > Display & Sound: enable Match content if SDR video looks oversaturated, try Match content frame rate for motion cadence, and leave audio output on Automatic unless you know your connected equipment supports a specific format. For privacy, review location and personalization separately—turning off device location does not stop every form of data use or prevent general location from being inferred from an IP address.
Options and labels can vary by software version, television, and connected audio equipment. If a label differs, look under All settings > Display & Sound. The paths and capabilities below reflect Google support documentation available October 11, 2026.
Which picture settings are worth changing?
The Google TV Streamer (4K) supports HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. That describes device capability, not a guarantee that every video will play in HDR: the title, streaming app, display, and connection all have to support the relevant format. Google recommends a 4K television for the best experience, and the output resolution is limited by both the Streamer and the connected display. Google’s Streamer specifications list the supported formats.

My non-HDR video looks too saturated
If SDR video looks oversaturated while HDR settings are active, turn on Match content. Google specifically documents this as the fix for that symptom. Find display options under All settings > Display & Sound, then look for the Match content control. This can help the Streamer and TV handle content according to its dynamic range; it does not calibrate the television or guarantee accurate color for every input and picture mode. See Google’s display settings guidance.

HDR video output isn’t working at all
First confirm that the title and app offer HDR, and that the television supports the format being played. Google TV Streamer supports HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision, but availability still depends on the display and content. In Display & Sound, the HDR format setting can allow apps to select an available format or let you choose formats manually. App selection is a sensible default; use manual selection when troubleshooting a known display mismatch rather than assuming that enabling every format creates HDR support.
Also check the television’s HDMI input settings. Some TVs require an HDMI signal format such as “enhanced mode” for HDR; names and steps vary by manufacturer, so consult the TV’s instructions. Google’s general playback guidance says 4K availability requires a compatible device and a minimum download speed of 15 Mbps, but this is not a promise that every app or title will stream in 4K. Content availability and the quality you own or have access to also matter. Google’s 4K and HDR playback guidance explains those general constraints.

Match the source frame rate if motion cadence bothers you
Match content frame rate lets the Streamer match the source video’s frame rate. It is separate from output resolution and HDR format selection. Try it if film or television motion looks uneven to you, but remember that displays can behave differently when the signal changes frame rate. The setting is a cadence preference, not a resolution upgrade.

Google describes the Streamer’s game mode option as reducing latency to allow faster game response. Look for it under All settings > Display & Sound. The result also depends on the television and game; use the TV’s own low-latency or game setting if needed, following its instructions.

How should you set audio output?
Start with Google’s recommended Automatic output, which selects the best audio quality format available to the connected system. Open All settings > Display & Sound > Audio options > Output format. If you change this setting, Google says the Streamer may need to be unplugged for one minute and powered back on before the change takes effect. Google’s sound settings page documents the route and choices.
Automatic or manual output?
| Choice | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Best starting point for most setups; the system selects the best available format. | The connected TV, receiver, or soundbar still determines what formats are available. |
| Dolby Digital Plus | Manual choice when the connected audio chain is known to support it; Google lists up to 7.1 channels. | A channel-capable format does not mean a specific program contains that many channels. |
| Dolby Digital | Manual choice when equipment compatibility calls for it; Google lists up to 5.1 discrete channels. | Confirm support on the TV, receiver, or soundbar. |
| PCM stereo | Manual stereo output for a compatible setup that needs it. | It is stereo; it does not provide multichannel output. |
Manual selections can cause audio or visual issues if the connected TV, A/V receiver, or soundbar does not support the selected format. For a known surround-sound configuration, the separate control is under Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings > Surround sound format selection > Manual. Only select formats your equipment supports.

TV speakers, receiver, or soundbar: the connection matters
Using built-in TV speakers is the simplest route. For an external audio system, compatibility depends on the TV or receiver’s ports and supported formats, not just a Streamer menu choice. Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable between the Streamer and TV, receiver, or soundbar for optimal performance; the cable is sold separately. If the Streamer connects directly to the TV, Google says to connect the audio system to the TV’s eARC HDMI port with an HDMI 2.1 cable for high-quality audio. A cable cannot add audio features that the TV or sound system does not support. See Google’s connection recommendations.
Which privacy settings should you review?
Google says Google TV may use watchlists and watch activity, streaming services, approximate location, user and device IDs, app interactions, installed apps, crash logs, diagnostics, analytics, and personalization information. Voice queries can return results from other apps in use on the device. These are distinct kinds of data and activity; changing one control should not be treated as an all-purpose privacy switch. Google explains how Google TV handles your data.

Turn off device location if you do not want location-based access
Go to Settings > Privacy > Location and turn location off. When it is enabled, apps granted location permission can use device location for location-based information, services, or ads. Google says that with it off, wireless signals and sensor information are not collected for location accuracy and location-based services. However, an internet-connected device can still reveal general location through its IP address. Turning this setting off does not make the Streamer anonymous or establish that watch history, diagnostics, or advertising are disabled.
Review recommendations and connected services
Google says recommendations can draw on viewing history, owned content, and selected streaming services. When setting up services, choose the ones your household actually subscribes to if you want recommendations to reflect what is available to you. Review account activity and service selections separately if you want to change personalization behavior; Google’s data explanation does not say that disabling location stops other data uses.
Know where ads may appear
Google says Google TV and Android TV may show labeled advertisements for content available through Google TV, Play, or third-party apps, and partner apps may show their own ads. The location control is not described as an ad-off switch. Google’s overview of how Google TV and Android TV work covers recommendations and advertising.
