If one app keeps crashing on your Google TV Streamer, update it in the Play Store, then try Settings > Apps > [app name] > Force stop. If several apps or the device interface are slow, restart the Streamer and check for app and system updates instead. A crash by itself does not establish that the Google TV Streamer 4K is defective.

First, work out whether one app or the whole device is affected

Note whether the problem is confined to one app or whether multiple apps take too long to open and the Google TV interface is sluggish. Google provides separate guidance for app crashes and slow or laggy devices, so the right first steps depend on the scope.

  • One app crashes: Start with that app’s update and force-stop options.
  • Several apps or the interface are slow: Restart the device, then check app and system updates.

Neither symptom alone proves a hardware fault. Avoid returning the Streamer solely on the basis of one app crashing before trying the relevant software steps.

For a crash in one app, update it and force stop it

  1. Check for an app update. Open the Play Store on the Streamer and check for updates to the affected app. Google recommends checking app updates first for crashes.
  2. Force stop the app. Open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, and choose Force stop. Menu labels can vary by software version or region.
  3. Open the app again. Check whether it launches and whether the crash returns during the action that usually triggers it.
  4. If it still crashes, contact the app’s developer. Google directs users to the app developer when the app-specific steps do not resolve the problem.

Force stop closes the app; it is not the same as clearing its data. Try this lower-disruption step before considering options that may affect the app’s saved state.

For broader slowness, restart and check updates

  1. Restart the Streamer: Go to Settings > System > Restart.
  2. Close background apps: Close apps you are not using, then check whether opening apps or navigating the interface improves.
  3. Check app updates: Open the Play Store and install available updates. Google notes that the device may feel slower while app updates are running.
  4. Check for a system update: Go to Settings > System > About > System update and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.

Settings wording and menu placement may differ across software versions and regions. If an item is not in the stated location, look for the corresponding Apps, System, or About section in Settings.

Check the connection and selected profile before clearing app data

If the issue involves playback or general device behavior, Google’s broader troubleshooting guidance also includes checking the network connection and confirming that the intended profile is active. These checks can help distinguish an app or playback problem from a wider device issue.

If earlier steps have not helped, Google’s general guide includes clearing the affected app’s data. Treat this as more disruptive than force stopping: clearing data can remove app-local information, and Google does not promise that local settings or sign-in state will be preserved. Consider whether you can sign back in or restore the app’s setup before proceeding.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort

Google recommends trying other troubleshooting first because a factory reset erases all data on the device. It is not an equivalent or routine next step after force stopping an app. Before resetting, make sure you are prepared to set up the Streamer and its apps again.

Decide where to escalate

  • One app still crashes after updating and force stopping: Contact that app’s developer, as Google’s app-crash guidance recommends.
  • Several apps or device functions remain affected: Seek help from Google or device support rather than assuming the Streamer has failed.
  • Considering returning the Google TV Streamer 4K: Base the decision on persistent device-wide problems and the support options available to you, not on an assumption that replacing the hardware will fix an app-specific crash. The troubleshooting guidance does not establish replacement as a remedy for an app-level problem.
