Google Trends does have an API in 2026, but it is still an early-access alpha, not a generally available service. If you need programmatic access, you can apply to test it; if you need a usable workflow now, choose between the Trends website, its limited public BigQuery datasets, or Google Ads Keyword Planner based on the data you actually need.
Does Google Trends have an API in 2026?
Yes. Google announced the Google Trends API alpha on July 24, 2025. Google’s current API documentation still describes early access and invites applications from testers. Access is limited, so an application does not mean you can immediately use the API. Google’s 2025 announcement said it would be available to a very limited number of testers.
The alpha is intended to make Trends data easier to use consistently in software. Google describes a rolling five-year history, aggregations by day, week, month, or year, geographic breakdowns, and consistently scaled data. The API’s published specifications are product details, not independent evidence about how well it performs for a particular project.
So the accurate answer to “Does Google Trends have an API?” is: an API alpha exists, but general availability is not documented. The older claim that Google has no API is out of date; the claim that anyone can sign up for an open API is also unsupported.

What to use instead depends on the job
| Option | Best for | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Trends website | Manual exploration and visual comparisons | Interactive exploration without building a data pipeline | Each request is scaled from 0 to 100, so separately requested series are not directly comparable as absolute search volumes. |
| Google Trends API alpha | Programmatic Trends data, if you qualify for access | Rolling five-year window, multiple time aggregations, geographic breakdowns, and consistently scaled data | Limited early access; not a generally open endpoint. |
| Google Trends public BigQuery datasets | SQL exploration of published popular and rising queries | Top 25 and Top 25 Rising queries, with US and international coverage | Not a complete Trends feed or arbitrary-term historical lookup. |
| Google Ads Keyword Planner and API | Campaign keyword ideas and advertising estimates | Keyword suggestions, historical metrics, competition and bid metrics, and forecasts | Campaign-planning metrics are not equivalent to Trends’ normalized interest series. |
| Third-party keyword or trend software | Packaged research or monitoring workflows | Features depend on the provider | Verify data source, geography, time range, refresh schedule, export/API features, and terms before choosing. |
Use the Trends website for occasional research
For a one-off question—whether interest in a topic is rising, how it differs by region, or how two subjects compare—the website is the simplest starting point. Google’s current API documentation says the Trends interface allows comparison of eight terms. Google’s July 2025 announcement gave a different figure of five; use the current documentation for the present limit.
Trends values are relative, not counts of searches. Google rescales results from 0 to 100 for each request. A value of 100 marks the peak interest in the selected comparison; it does not mean 100 searches, and a value of 50 does not necessarily mean half as many searches as a value of 100 in a different request. Keep comparisons within the same request where possible.

- Open the Google Trends website and enter the term or terms you want to investigate.
- Set the geography, time range, category, and search type to match the question.
- Record those settings alongside any export or chart you share, so someone else can reproduce the comparison.
- Interpret the index as relative interest for that request, not as absolute search volume.
Apply for the API alpha when you need repeatable Trends data
If your workflow requires a script or application to retrieve Trends data repeatedly, check Google’s Google Trends API documentation and its tester application details. The documented alpha offers a rolling five-year window and daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly aggregation, as well as geographic breakdowns. Google’s API description says the series are consistently scaled, addressing a key challenge of comparing independently requested website charts.

Do not build a production workflow on the assumption that access will be granted. Google describes the alpha as limited early access; the documentation does not establish general availability, approval timing, or a guaranteed path from application to access.

Use BigQuery only if its published query scope fits
Google’s public Trends datasets in BigQuery are useful for SQL analysis of popular and rising searches, but they are not a substitute for querying any arbitrary term’s complete Trends history. Google describes the data as anonymized, indexed, normalized, and aggregated. The datasets publish the Top 25 overall and Top 25 Rising queries over the past 30 days.
- United States: coverage includes 210 Designated Market Areas, with daily data over a rolling five-year window and hourly data over a rolling one-year window.
- International: coverage includes approximately 50 additional countries, with daily data over a rolling five-year window.
- Cost: Google’s stated free tier includes up to 1 TB per month of query processing and 10 GB per month of storage. Usage beyond those limits is billed at regular BigQuery pricing; check current pricing and account requirements before relying on a workflow.
These limits and coverage figures are documented in Google Trends Help for the BigQuery datasets. If the subject you want to study is not among the published top or rising queries, this dataset may not answer your question.

Choose Keyword Planner for advertising questions, not Trends data
Google Ads Keyword Planner is the better fit when the question is about planning a campaign: finding keyword ideas, examining historical keyword metrics, or working with competition, bid, and forecast measures. The Google Ads API keyword-planning documentation describes these capabilities.
Those are advertising-planning measures, not a replacement for Google Trends’ normalized interest over time. Use Keyword Planner to inform keyword and campaign decisions; use Trends when you need relative interest patterns across time or geography.

How to choose a workflow
- Need a visual answer to a one-off question? Start with the Trends website and preserve the query, geography, time range, category, and search type with your results.
- Need recurring, programmatic Trends data? Apply for the API alpha, but design a fallback because access is limited.
- Can your question be answered by published top and rising queries? Use the BigQuery datasets if their query scope, geography, and time windows fit.
- Need campaign ideas, bids, competition, or forecasts? Use Keyword Planner and treat its measures as advertising data, not Trends interest.
- Considering a third-party tool? Confirm exactly where its data comes from, which countries and time periods it supports, how often it refreshes, and whether it offers the exports or API access you need. Capabilities vary by provider.
There is no independently established winner among these options: the documented products answer different questions, and the available specifications do not establish which one performs best for a given user’s needs.
