Google Translate is the better-documented choice for a dedicated live speech-to-speech conversation. Its Conversation mode speaks translations through the phone or headphones, automatically detects when each speaker stops, and provides a two-person face-to-face view. On Android, Google also documents continuation while you switch apps, minimize Translate, or lock the screen.

Apple Translate is the stronger fit for an iPhone-centered workflow when you want face-to-face text bubbles, automatic turn handling, or conversations that continue offline after downloading the required languages. Neither company’s official documentation establishes a universal accuracy winner, so the right choice depends on your phone, language pair, connectivity and whether you need Apple’s separate call or AirPods features.

What “voice conversations” means in each app

Both apps can listen to a spoken phrase, translate it, display the result and play translated audio. They are designed for alternating speakers rather than a simultaneous conference interpretation feed. Each person speaks, waits for the translated result, and then responds.

The names and controls differ. Google calls its dedicated live speech-to-speech experience Conversation. Apple describes an in-person conversation in which spoken or typed phrases appear as translated text bubbles, with optional automatic playback and turn detection. Those are the features to compare for a conversation at a café, hotel desk, clinic or border crossing.

Google Translate: how its conversation mode works

Conversation mode on iPhone and iPad

Google’s iPhone and iPad help documentation presents several live-translation choices, including Conversation, Listening, Text only and custom settings. In Conversation mode, the app listens to alternating speakers and plays each translation through the device speakers or connected headphones. The microphone automatically detects when one language stops and the other language starts, so participants do not have to press a button for every turn.

Google’s face-to-face view divides the screen into two halves. Each person sees the transcription and translation for their own side in the selected language. That layout is useful when a phone is placed between two people, because neither speaker has to interpret a single, constantly changing screen.

If a participant misses the audio, tapping translated text can play it aloud again. Some live modes can appear unavailable or greyed out depending on the headphone connection, so an unexpected disabled control does not necessarily mean the language pair is unsupported.

Basic Google workflow

  1. Open Google Translate and select the two languages for the conversation. Confirm the exact pair shown in the current app; availability can vary by language and mode.
  2. Choose Conversation. This is Google’s named speech-to-speech mode, rather than a text-entry screen.
  3. Choose the audio route. Use the phone speaker or connected headphones. If a control is unavailable, check whether the connected headset changes which modes the app offers.
  4. Start with one speaker. Speak naturally and pause when finished. The microphone is designed to detect the change between the two languages.
  5. Use face-to-face view when sharing the phone. Each speaker gets a half-screen with the relevant transcription and translation.
  6. Replay a result if necessary. Tap the translated text to hear it again.

Android’s documented background behavior

On Android, Google says live translation can continue while the user switches to another app, minimizes Translate or locks the screen. That is a documented Android behavior, not a general promise for every platform. The reviewed iPhone and iPad documentation does not establish the same background continuation on iOS, so an iPhone user should keep the conversation screen available unless a current app update says otherwise.

Apple Translate: how an in-person conversation works

Input, output and automatic turns

Apple Translate accepts spoken or typed phrases. It shows the translated result as text bubbles and can play the translation aloud. The iPhone guide also describes an option to play translations automatically, an Auto Translate setting that detects when a speaker starts and stops, and a Detect Language option. These controls let you choose between a more manual exchange and a hands-off alternating conversation.

Its face-to-face view gives each participant a side of the display, so both people can read the exchange from their own orientation. This is the closest Apple equivalent to Google’s two-sided conversation layout, although the labels and controls are different.

Basic Apple workflow

  1. Open Translate and select the two conversation languages. If you will be offline, download the required languages before leaving a connection.
  2. Open the conversation view. Speak a phrase or type it. Apple displays the translated phrase as a text bubble.
  3. Turn on automatic playback if you want spoken results without tapping. You can also play an individual translation manually.
  4. Enable Auto Translate for alternating speakers. The app attempts to recognize when one person has finished and the other has begun.
  5. Use Detect Language when the speaker may change languages. If you already know the direction of the exchange, selecting the languages yourself can make the interaction more predictable.
  6. Switch to face-to-face view when sharing the iPhone. Each speaker can read from their own side of the screen.

Google Translate vs. Apple Translate at a glance

Capability Google Translate Apple Translate
Named live speech-to-speech mode Conversation mode is explicitly named and documented. In-person conversation combines spoken or typed input, translated bubbles and optional playback.
Audio output Translations can play through the phone speakers or headphones. Translations can be played aloud, including automatic playback.
Turn handling The microphone automatically detects when one language stops and the other starts. Auto Translate is documented for automatic detection of when a speaker starts and stops.
Two-person display Face-to-face view splits the screen into two language-specific halves. Face-to-face view lets each person see the conversation from their own side.
Language coverage Google publishes a broad supported-language list for Live Translate; confirm the exact pair in the current app. Apple supports downloaded language pairs for in-person conversations, but its coverage is not identical to Google’s.
Offline conversation The cited documentation does not establish the same offline conversation behavior described by Apple. In-person conversations work with downloaded languages without internet access or when On-Device Mode is enabled.
Continue while leaving the app Documented on Android when switching apps, minimizing Translate or locking the screen. The cited iPhone guide does not document equivalent background continuation.
Call translation Not part of the specific Google conversation workflow described here. Separate Live Translation is documented for Phone and FaceTime, subject to availability.
Earbud translation Headphones can carry Conversation audio, but no particular headset is required by the cited documentation. Separate nearby-conversation translation is documented for certain AirPods with a compatible iPhone and software.
Published accuracy comparison No controlled head-to-head accuracy benchmark or accuracy percentage is provided in the official pages reviewed.

Language pairs and offline use: the decision most travelers miss

Check the pair, not just the app’s reputation

“Supports many languages” does not guarantee that every pair works in every mode. Google lists languages for Live Translate, but the exact pair should be checked in the current app. Apple’s downloaded-language behavior likewise depends on the languages you select. A language may be available for text yet unavailable for a particular live audio mode, or a mode may expose fewer choices when headphones are connected.

Before a trip or appointment, select the actual direction of conversation in both apps if possible. Test a short sentence in each direction, confirm that audio plays, and verify that the face-to-face layout displays the expected languages. This catches a missing pair before you are standing in front of someone who needs an answer.

When Apple’s offline option matters

Apple states that in-person conversations work without an internet connection when the needed languages have been downloaded, or when On-Device Mode is turned on. That makes Apple the clearer documented choice for an iPhone user who expects poor reception, wants to keep a conversation local to the device, or needs a backup in transit.

Download and test languages while connected. A language that has not been downloaded cannot be assumed to become available after the signal disappears. Offline operation also does not make every Apple translation feature offline: Phone and FaceTime Live Translation are separate capabilities with their own requirements.

Which app is better for common situations?

Use Google first for a dedicated audio exchange

Choose Google when your priority is an explicitly named Conversation mode that speaks results through a phone or headphones. Its documented microphone behavior is designed for alternating speech, and its face-to-face view makes a shared device easy to position between two people.

Google is also the more natural first choice for an Android owner who needs to move away from the Translate screen, minimize the app or lock the phone while live translation continues. Keep that recommendation platform-specific: the cited background behavior is documented for Android, not established for iPhone.

Use Apple Translate first on an iPhone

Choose Apple when you want the conversation integrated into the iPhone’s native translation workflow. Its combination of text bubbles, optional spoken playback, Auto Translate, Detect Language and face-to-face display suits users who want to see the exchange as well as hear it.

Choose by the language pair

If your required pair is available in only one app’s live mode, that availability outweighs a general preference for one company’s interface. Confirm the pair in the current version of the app rather than relying on an old list, because language and feature availability can change.

Choose by the conversation environment

  • Quiet room, phone on a table: either app’s face-to-face layout can work; choose the interface you find easier to read.
  • Need to hear a result privately: Google documents audio through headphones, while Apple can play translations aloud; verify the particular headset and mode before relying on it.
  • Unreliable connectivity: Apple’s downloaded-language in-person mode has the clearest documented offline path.
  • Android multitasking: Google’s documented background continuation is a differentiator.
  • Apple ecosystem call or earbud use: evaluate Apple’s separate Live Translation requirements rather than ordinary Translate conversation controls.

Apple’s separate Live Translation features

Apple’s newer Live Translation functions should be evaluated as optional extensions, not as a replacement name for the standard in-person Translate conversation.

Phone calls

During an active call in the Phone app, Apple documents a way to start Live Translation. Spoken translations are heard by the other party, while an on-screen transcription is available. Language selection may require downloads, and availability varies by region and language.

FaceTime calls

For FaceTime, Apple describes translated live captions appearing as both callers speak. This is a captioning experience inside a call, not the two-person, face-to-face phone display used for an in-person Translate conversation. Apple also notes that language availability can vary.

Nearby conversation with supported AirPods

Apple documents an in-ear experience for a nearby conversation. The listener hears the other person translated into the listener’s preferred language, then speaks a response. The Translate app’s Live tab can show a transcript or play the translation through the iPhone speaker.

Is Google or Apple more accurate?

The official product pages reviewed describe controls, supported scenarios and constraints, but do not publish a controlled comparison of translation accuracy. There is therefore no evidence here for declaring Google the overall accuracy winner or Apple the overall accuracy winner.

Performance in a real conversation can change with the language pair, accent, speaking speed, background noise, overlapping speech, microphone placement and the complexity of the sentence. Those are practical variables, not a product-wide accuracy score. For an important exchange, use short sentences, pause between turns, show the written translation when possible and confirm names, numbers, dates and instructions by repeating them.

Apple specifically cautions that “Apple Intelligence uses generative models and outputs may vary. Check important information for accuracy.” Treat that warning as relevant to Apple’s generative Live Translation features, especially when a misunderstanding could affect safety, money, medicine or travel.

A five-minute pre-conversation test

  1. Confirm both languages. Select the exact source and target languages you will use; do not assume a text-only language option also works for live speech.
  2. Test one sentence each way. Check that the app recognizes the speaker, produces the expected language and finishes the turn cleanly.
  3. Check audio. Play a result through the phone speaker and, if needed, the headphones you plan to use.
  4. Test the shared layout. Open face-to-face view and make sure each participant can read the correct half of the screen.
  5. Test your connection plan. For Apple offline use, turn off connectivity briefly after downloading languages and run another exchange. For Android background use, minimize or lock the device and confirm that the documented behavior works on your handset.
  6. Prepare a visual fallback. Keep the translated text visible for names, addresses, numbers and other details that should not be heard incorrectly.

Troubleshooting voice conversations

The app does not hear the second speaker

  • Pause fully between turns so automatic detection has a clear changeover.
  • Move the phone closer to the speaker and reduce competing noise.
  • Check that the selected source and target languages match the actual exchange.
  • If using Google with headphones, review whether the connected headset has greyed out the mode you want.

There is no spoken translation

  • Tap the translated text to replay it in Google.
  • Use Apple’s manual playback control or enable automatic playback.
  • Check the phone’s media volume and whether audio is routed to headphones instead of the speaker.

The conversation stops when you leave the app

Google documents continuation in the background on Android when switching apps, minimizing Translate or locking the screen. Do not assume the same behavior on iPhone from that Android documentation. On iPhone, keep Translate in the foreground unless your current version explicitly provides another option.

Offline translation is unavailable

For Apple, verify that both required languages were downloaded and that On-Device Mode is enabled if you are using it. Reconnect before the conversation if a download is incomplete. Remember that call and FaceTime Live Translation have separate availability rules.

Decision guide

Your priority Better first choice Reason
Dedicated spoken conversation with audio through speakers or headphones Google Translate Conversation is an explicitly documented live speech-to-speech mode with automatic turn detection.

Bottom line

Pick Google Translate for the clearest dedicated live speech-to-speech workflow and for documented Android background continuation. Pick Apple Translate on iPhone when face-to-face text, automatic turn handling or offline downloaded-language conversations matter most. Consider Apple’s separate Live Translation only when you specifically need Phone, FaceTime or compatible AirPods features. For accuracy, test the exact language pair and conditions you will use: the available official documentation does not support a universal winner.
