On an iPhone running iOS 18.4 or later, go to Settings > Apps > Translate > Default Translation App and choose Google Translate if it appears. Only apps that support Apple’s default-translation integration can be selected.
Set Google Translate as the default
- Update your iPhone to iOS 18.4 or later, and install or update Google Translate.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Translate.
- Tap Default Translation App.
- Select Google Translate.
Apple documents this setting path in its iPhone Translate settings guide. The available choices depend on which apps on your iPhone support Apple’s provider integration.

What the default setting changes
Apple describes the selection as the app used to translate selected text. It does not necessarily reroute every translation feature or workflow in every app. Google Translate also offers translation of written words, speech, and images within its own iPhone app; those features are separate from choosing a system default. See Google’s guides for written translation, speech translation, and image translation. Google notes that image translation works best when the text is clear.

Installing a translation app alone does not make it eligible for the iPhone’s default-app selector. Apple’s developer documentation says iOS and iPadOS 18.4 and later let people choose another app to handle text translation when that app implements the required provider integration. If Google Translate is missing, update iOS and the app, then check the selector again. If it still does not appear, it may not currently be available as a supported provider on your device.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Google’s support community reported on May 22, 2025, that a basic iOS integration was rolling out with app version 9.8. That is historical rollout information, not a version requirement or guarantee that the option will appear on every device today. The selector on your iPhone shows which providers are currently available.
Choose the option that fits your workflow
The setting offers Apple Translate and any other supported provider available on your device. Choose Google Translate if you want it to handle selected-text translation requests and it appears in the list; otherwise, select one of the other available providers. This setting alone does not establish differences in translation accuracy or language coverage.
