Gboard is usually the better choice when you want to write original text in another language across messages, notes, email, or other apps. Add the language and layout you need, then switch to it from the space bar. If you want to write in one language and insert a translated version while composing, Gboard also has a Translate mode.
Google Translate is better for a different job: translating a word, phrase, or sentence in its own app. On a computer, it can also provide a virtual keyboard or drawing area for characters your physical keyboard cannot produce. The right option depends on whether you are changing your typing language or translating text.
The short answer: choose by task

There is no documented universal winner for typing speed, translation quality, latency, or performance in every language. Official help pages describe the workflows, not a head-to-head benchmark. Treat the task, device, language, and available layout as the deciding factors.

Gboard is the keyboard you use inside other apps
Gboard is a general-purpose on-screen keyboard. When you add a language and its layout, that language becomes one of the keyboard inputs available in text fields throughout the phone. You can write directly in the selected script instead of composing somewhere else and copying a result.

Changing Gboard’s language changes the keyboard input, not the phone’s overall language setting. Menus, system labels, and the rest of the device stay as they were. That separation makes Gboard suitable for people who use several languages during the same day.
Google Translate is primarily a translation workspace
Google Translate accepts typed words or phrases and displays a translation. The normal Android workflow happens in the Translate app: choose the source and target languages, enter text, and read or copy the result. That is different from changing the input language of the keyboard used by your messaging or notes app.
On a computer, Translate also addresses a narrower input problem. Its virtual keyboard or drawing area can supply letters, symbols, or scripts that are not printed on your physical keyboard. On Android, handwriting input appears only for languages for which the feature is supported.

Set up Gboard to type in another language on Android
Google’s Android guidance describes adding a language and layout in Gboard and switching languages by touching and holding the space bar. The exact surrounding Android Settings labels can differ by device manufacturer, but the Gboard language controls follow this pattern.
- Open Gboard’s language settings. In any app, tap a text field to show Gboard, open the keyboard’s Settings menu, and choose Languages. You can also reach Gboard through the phone’s keyboard settings if the keyboard is not currently visible.
- Add the language. Tap Add keyboard (the wording may appear as an add-language option), select the language you need, and choose the layout offered for that language. Select Done to save it.
- Return to a text field. Open a message, note, email, or another app where you can type. The app does not need to be Google Translate; the point of this setup is to make the new input available across apps.
- Switch input languages. Touch and hold the space bar, then select the language and layout you added. A brief hold is different from a quick tap, which normally inserts a space.
- Write and switch back as needed. Repeat the space-bar gesture whenever you need another language. You can keep multiple layouts installed and move between them without changing the phone’s system language.
Some of Google’s documented Gboard steps apply only to Android 7.0 and newer. If a menu is missing, check the Android version and the keyboard selected under the device’s on-screen-keyboard settings before assuming the language is unsupported.

Use Gboard Translate when you want a translation while composing
Gboard has a separate Translate feature for a mixed workflow: you write in one language, Gboard prepares a translation, and you insert the translated text into the app you are using. This is not the same as selecting a different keyboard layout to write the original language yourself.
- Open a text field in the messaging, notes, email, or other app where the translated text should go.
- Open Gboard’s feature menu. Use the toolbar or feature-menu control on the keyboard, then tap Translate.
- Select the source and target languages. The source is the language you plan to type; the target is the language you want to insert. The available pair depends on what Gboard supports at that time.
- Type the original text. Gboard displays a preview or translation variations as you compose.
- Review the result. Compare the proposed wording with your intent, especially for short phrases that can have several meanings.
- Select the translation to place it in the app’s text field, then continue editing or send it using that app’s normal controls.
Google documents this Translate-as-you-type workflow for both Android and iOS. The documentation does not establish that every possible language pair is available, so check the language selectors rather than assuming a pair will appear.

Use the Translate app when the translation itself is the main objective, rather than when you need a permanent second keyboard input. This is useful for checking a phrase, understanding a message, or preparing text before pasting it elsewhere.
- Open Google Translate on Android and choose the source and target languages.
- Tap the text-entry area and type the word, phrase, or sentence. The app displays the translated output as you enter or submit the text.
- Give the text context. If a word has multiple meanings, put it in a complete sentence. Google’s guidance specifically recommends complete sentences to help provide context.
- Read, copy, or edit the result. Copy the translation into another app only after checking that the source and target languages are correct and that the wording fits the situation.
This workflow leaves your phone’s keyboard language unchanged. You are translating content inside Translate, not turning Translate into a system-wide mobile keyboard.
Enter unavailable characters on a computer
A computer keyboard may not have the letters, diacritics, symbols, or script you need. Google Translate’s computer version provides a virtual keyboard or a drawing area for this situation. You can use the on-screen input to construct text in a supported writing system, then translate or copy it.

- Open Google Translate on the computer and select the source language that uses the needed script.
- Choose the virtual keyboard or drawing input when that option is shown for the selected language.
- Enter the characters. Use the on-screen keys for a known character or draw a character when the drawing area is provided.
- Check the recognized text before relying on the translation. Recognition and available controls depend on the selected language.
- Copy the resulting text into another document or app if you need to reuse it.
This computer feature solves an input-method problem. It does not make Google Translate a general keyboard that follows you through every desktop application.

Handwriting input: useful, but conditional
Handwriting can be helpful when you know what a character looks like but cannot identify it on a keyboard. In the Android Translate app, handwriting input is available only where the selected language supports it. Gboard handwriting is likewise subject to language availability.
Because support is language-specific, treat handwriting as an option to check rather than a guaranteed feature. If the handwriting control does not appear after selecting a language, use an available keyboard layout, the computer virtual keyboard, or another supported input method instead.
Choose the right workflow for common situations
You are writing a message from scratch in another language
Use a Gboard language layout. The text is created directly in the messaging app, and you can switch between installed languages with the space bar. This is the cleanest workflow when you know the language well enough to compose the message yourself.
You know the message in your language but need to send it in another
Use Gboard Translate while composing. It keeps the translation step next to the text field and lets you select the generated wording without opening a separate translation workspace. Review the preview before inserting it.

You need the meaning of one unfamiliar word
Use Google Translate’s typed-text workflow. Enter the word, then try a complete sentence if the isolated result is ambiguous. A full sentence supplies context that a single token does not.
You need one symbol or character that your computer lacks
Use Translate’s computer virtual keyboard or drawing area. This avoids changing the physical keyboard layout for a one-off character and is distinct from installing a second mobile keyboard.
You alternate languages frequently
Add each required language and layout to Gboard, then switch deliberately with a long press on the space bar. Keep Translate available for passages you want converted rather than authored manually.
What to check before deciding
- Task: Are you authoring text, or translating text you already wrote? Authoring points to a Gboard layout; translation points to Google Translate or Gboard Translate.
- Location: Must the input work inside many apps, or only inside a translation window? Gboard is designed for the former; Translate’s standard mobile workflow is inside its app.
- Language and layout: Confirm that the exact language, script, and preferred layout appear in Gboard. A language name alone does not guarantee every regional layout.
- Language pair: For Gboard Translate, check that both the source and target languages can be selected together.
- Special input: If you need handwriting, a virtual keyboard, or character drawing, verify that the option is shown for your selected language and platform.
- Context: Short words and phrases can be ambiguous. Use a complete sentence when translating in Google Translate and review Gboard’s preview before inserting it.
Limitations the documentation does not resolve
Official help pages establish the setup and usage flows, but they do not provide a universal ranking for speed, accuracy, latency, or performance by language. It would be misleading to claim that Gboard always types faster or that Google Translate always produces a better translation.
They also do not promise that every language pair is available in Gboard Translate, or that handwriting works for every script. Availability can depend on the selected language and platform. Use the language pickers and the controls that actually appear on your device as the final check.

Troubleshooting
The new language does not appear when you hold the space bar
- Return to Gboard > Languages and confirm that the language and layout were saved.
- Make sure you are touching and holding the space bar rather than tapping it.
- Check that Gboard is the active on-screen keyboard. The language list belongs to the active keyboard, not necessarily to every keyboard installed on the phone.
- If the documented menu is unavailable, check whether the device meets the Android 7.0-or-newer requirement for the relevant step.
Changing Gboard did not change the phone’s menus
That is expected. Gboard’s language switch affects keyboard input; it does not change the device language setting.
Gboard Translate is missing or does not show the language pair
- Open Gboard’s feature menu and look specifically for Translate.
- Check both source and target selectors. The feature is documented on Android and iOS, but not every pair is established as available.
- If the pair cannot be selected, use the Google Translate app as a separate translation step or choose a supported pair.
The translation of a short word seems wrong
Enter the word in a complete sentence, verify the source language, and compare any available translation variations. Short isolated words often lack the context needed to choose one meaning.
You cannot find handwriting or the computer virtual keyboard
These controls are conditional. Translate handwriting on Android and Gboard handwriting depend on language support, while the virtual keyboard and drawing area are documented for Google Translate on a computer. Select the language first, then look for the input option provided for that platform.
A practical decision rule
Start with the destination of the text. If the destination is a message, note, email, or another app and you want to create the original words in another language, install that language in Gboard. If the destination is still an app but you want your words converted as you type, use Gboard’s Translate feature. If the immediate goal is understanding or converting a standalone passage, open Google Translate. If the obstacle is a missing computer character, use Translate’s virtual keyboard or drawing area.
