Google appears to be testing a left-hand AI Mode sidebar on the ordinary desktop Search results page. A screenshot reported by Search Engine Roundtable on October 14, 2026 shows a vertical rail with a small Google logo, conversation-history entries, a control to start an AI Mode chat and a settings icon. It is not a confirmed global rollout: the report’s author could not reproduce the interface in any browser, and Google has not announced this exact placement.
What Google is testing
The reported experiment moves controls normally associated with AI Mode into the persistent left side of a standard Google results page. Instead of opening a dedicated AI Mode view first, a user who sees the rail could apparently start an AI conversation, revisit earlier conversations and open related settings while remaining in the familiar Search interface.
Damien Andell, whose screenshot prompted the report, asked whether the sidebar had become the default Search sidebar for every search. That question remains unanswered. Barry Schwartz said he could not reproduce the rail, which is why the safest description is a reported test rather than a launch or default change.
Is the sidebar available to everyone?
No. There is no evidence that every Google account, browser or country has received it. The experiment’s audience, geography, device and browser requirements, account eligibility and duration have not been published. A user who does not see the rail should not assume that anything is wrong with their account.

What the controls appear to do
AI Mode entry
The rail includes a control for starting an AI Mode conversation. If Google keeps this design, it would provide a direct route from a conventional query to a conversational follow-up without requiring the user to find a separate tab or return to the homepage.
Conversation history
Several lines in the screenshot resemble previous conversation entries. Their presence suggests that an account could reopen earlier AI Mode sessions from Search, but the screenshot does not establish how long conversations are retained, whether entries are synchronized across devices or what privacy controls apply.

A settings icon is also shown. The available options were not documented, so it would be premature to claim that the control manages history, personalization, data retention or any particular Gemini setting.
Why Google might be trying this
A permanent entry point would reduce the distance between a conventional web search and AI Mode. Google describes AI Mode as an experimental, conversational and multimodal Search experience that supports follow-up questions, web links, Search Live and personalization. Putting its entry and history controls beside ordinary results would make those capabilities visible at the moment a user is already searching.

This is an inference from the interface placement, not a measured outcome. No usage, click-through or satisfaction statistic has been published for the sidebar test. Google has separately reported that query types showing AI Overviews were used more than 10% more often in the United States and India, based on internal data from September 2024 through April 2025. That figure concerns AI Overviews, not this sidebar, and cannot be used to estimate the experiment’s effect.
How this fits Google’s AI Search rollout
On May 20, 2025, Google said AI Mode had started as a Labs test and was rolling out in the United States without requiring Labs sign-up. The company described advanced reasoning, multimodal input, follow-up questions and links to the web. Google also explained that AI Mode uses “query fan-out”: it breaks a question into subtopics, runs multiple searches and combines the results into a response. Google said capabilities could graduate into core Search as it received feedback.

The reported sidebar would therefore be an interface change around an existing experimental product, not proof that AI Mode has replaced ordinary results or that every search is now answered conversationally. Google continues to warn that AI Mode is experimental and can make mistakes, so users should inspect linked sources and verify important claims.

An early description of the screenshot suggested that Gemini app conversations were appearing in the rail. Marie Haynes later clarified that the entries were conversations she had with Gemini on an Android phone using the Gemini overlay, not evidence that the standalone Gemini app had merged with AI Mode. The distinction matters: the screenshot may indicate account-level or cross-surface history behavior, but it does not establish a unified Gemini-and-AI-Mode inbox.

What users should do if they see it
- Check that the page is the normal desktop Google Search results page, rather than a dedicated AI Mode screen.
- Note which account, country, browser and device show the rail; experiments can be tied to any of those factors.
- Open the settings control only if you are comfortable reviewing an experimental interface, and read the displayed history or personalization options before changing them.
- For consequential information, open the web links attached to an AI response and verify the claims independently.
- If the rail disappears after a refresh or on another browser, treat that as normal experiment behavior rather than a fault.
