Google is reportedly testing two different AI Overview layouts: one puts an Overview below a hotel Knowledge Panel in some searches, while another uses a shorter desktop design. The reports do not show that these are the same test or that either change has rolled out broadly.
What the reports say Google is testing
The headline phrase “inside Knowledge Panels” is not an exact description of the reported hotel layout. In the September 24, 2026 report, Search Engine Roundtable describes an AI Overview appearing at the bottom-right beneath a hotel Knowledge Panel—not necessarily embedded within the panel’s contents. The report says the usual top-of-page placement also appeared in other searches, indicating variable placement in the sightings it describes. Search Engine Roundtable’s report attributes the screenshots to Lluc Penycate.
A separate report, published by Search Engine Watch on September 25, 2026, compares a shorter desktop AI Overview with an older, longer design. Its author says they were assuming the change was a new test based on the layouts being compared. That report does not establish that the shorter design was part of the hotel-panel observation. The first is a reported screenshot-based placement observation; the second is a comparison between two designs that its author tentatively describes as a test. Neither report supplies an official Google statement confirming the specific change.

How the two observations differ
| Observation | Search context | Reported layout | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Knowledge Panel | Some hotel searches | AI Overview at the bottom-right beneath the Knowledge Panel; the usual top-of-page placement was also seen in other searches | A variable placement sighting reported September 24, 2026 |
| Shorter desktop Overview | Desktop search | A shorter design compared with an older, longer AI Overview | A layout comparison reported September 25, 2026; the report characterizes it as an assumed test |
The reports do not provide evidence that Google combined these layouts into one experiment. Keep the hotel placement and the shorter desktop design separate when interpreting what users may see. In particular, the shorter-design comparison does not substantiate the hotel placement, and the hotel screenshot does not show that the Overview’s height changed.
Is this a general Google rollout?
The reports describe observed interface tests, not a confirmed release for everyone. They do not establish a rollout date, geographic availability, user eligibility, test duration, or the number of people who saw either layout. The hotel report’s mention of both below-panel and top-of-page placements also argues against treating the placement as universal.

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search document provides official background on those Search features, but it does not confirm either specific September 2026 layout observation. It should not be treated as an announcement of a new Knowledge Panel arrangement or a rollout schedule.

What site owners and searchers can infer
For searchers, these reports suggest that an AI Overview’s position or height may vary between observed layouts. They do not establish a permanent interface change, explain why an Overview appeared beneath a hotel panel, or indicate which queries or users might see that arrangement. If the layout differs from one search to another, these reports alone cannot tell whether the difference reflects a test, query context, or another factor.
For site owners, the evidence is limited to presentation: neither report measures clicks, rankings, referrals, or publisher traffic. A layout sighting alone is not evidence of a traffic impact. The reports give no test-specific statistics or measured performance outcomes, so claims about audience reach or click changes would go beyond what has been reported. Google may change or end interface tests without announcement.
What to watch for
Further observations would need to clarify whether the hotel placement recurs, whether it appears below rather than within the Knowledge Panel, and whether the shorter desktop design is a separate test. A confirmed product announcement or systematic measurement would be needed to establish rollout scope or traffic effects. Until then, describe these as two reported layout observations, not a single confirmed change.

Are the hotel placement and shorter desktop design one test?
The reports do not establish that they are connected. One describes placement beneath a hotel Knowledge Panel; the other compares the length of desktop Overviews.
Has Google rolled either layout out to everyone?
The reports describe sightings, not a broad rollout. They do not establish availability, geography, eligibility, duration, or a rollout date.
Do these AI Overview tests affect website traffic or rankings?
The reports do not measure clicks, rankings, referrals, or publisher traffic. They establish layout observations only, so they do not show a traffic or ranking effect.
