Google has not publicly explained why it removed location-based reminders. Its announcements explain a broader shift: reminders from Assistant, Calendar and Keep were being consolidated in Google Tasks. That tells us where Google wanted to manage to-dos, but not why the location trigger itself went away.
What happened to Google location-based reminders?
The changes affected reminders in more than one Google product, but the available record does not establish three separate shutdowns of the same feature. The phrase “three times” captures how repeated product changes may feel to a user; it should not be read as a verified count of three distinct removals.
Assistant reminders: notice reported in 2022
On June 1, 2022, 9to5Google reported that Google’s reminder page displayed a notice that users would soon no longer be able to set reminders at locations. The quoted notice said users could still create reminders for a time and set routines for a location. It did not give a specific removal date. 9to5Google’s report
Assistant and Calendar reminders: migration to Tasks announced
On September 20, 2022, Google announced that Assistant and Calendar reminders would migrate to Google Tasks. The stated aim was to simplify task management by putting to-dos in one place. Google described setting a dated or timed reminder with Assistant and getting a notification when it was time to act. The announcement explained the destination for those reminders, not why location triggers were being removed. Google’s Tasks migration announcement

Keep reminders: migration announced in 2024
On April 25, 2024, Google said Keep reminders would automatically save to Tasks over the following year. At the time, Google described Keep reminders as supporting time- or location-based triggers, and said the move would make Tasks its single solution for managing to-dos across Workspace. Why did Google remove the location trigger?
Google’s public explanation supports a broad product direction: consolidating reminders and to-dos in Tasks so they can be managed across Google products. It does not state that location reminders were removed because of low usage, privacy concerns, technical problems or another specific reason. No usage figure for location reminders appears in the cited announcements.

Google’s January 2024 post about separate Assistant changes said it was removing some “underutilized” features to focus on user experience, quality, reliability and consistency across devices. That statement concerns the changes described in that post; it does not identify location reminders as one of those features or establish underuse as the reason for their removal. Google Help also says location history may inform some personalized Assistant suggestions. That establishes a use of location data in some Assistant experiences, but does not connect privacy to the decision about reminder triggers. Google Assistant Help on location history

What works now, and what does not?
Google’s current Help guidance says location-based reminders in Keep can no longer be created or received. For a migrated Keep reminder, location information may remain in the task description. That preserves information about the old reminder; it does not make the task trigger when you arrive at a place. Google’s documented reminder workflow supports times, and mobile notifications for Keep reminders now come through Calendar or Tasks. Google Keep Help on reminders Google Tasks Help
