Google Search snippets are the preview descriptions shown beneath search-result titles. You can improve the page content and meta description Google may draw from, or restrict what it can show, but you cannot dictate the exact text or mark a page for a featured snippet. This guide covers Google Search snippets—not reusable code snippets.
What a Google Search snippet is
A regular snippet is a short description beneath a result’s title. Google primarily builds it from the page itself and selects text that best matches a particular search, so the same page can show different snippets for different queries. Google may use the HTML meta description instead when it considers that a more accurate summary. See Google’s snippet controls documentation and SEO Starter Guide.
A featured snippet is a distinct search appearance: a specially displayed page excerpt that Google selects as an answer to a query. It may appear prominently in results or in a related-question context, and a click generally takes the reader to the source section represented in the excerpt. Google describes how the feature works in its featured snippets help page.
What you can influence—and what you cannot
You can make the material available to Google clearer and more useful. Write accurate page text that directly answers the questions your readers are likely to ask, and provide a concise, unique meta description that summarizes the page. Treat these as good candidate material, not instructions that determine what Google will display. Google chooses the snippet and may truncate it to fit the device; no universal character count guarantees the displayed wording.
You cannot designate a page as a featured snippet. Google states, “You can’t. Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user’s search request, and if so, elevates it.” Clear answers may help readers and make the page easier to interpret, but no word count, formatting formula, or markup guarantees selection. Google’s featured snippet guidance distinguishes publisher-controlled page content from Google’s selection.
Regular snippets and featured snippets are separate search appearances. Structured data can help Google understand page content and may make a page eligible for supported rich-result features; Google’s documentation does not present it as a way to force a featured snippet. Its Search Appearance overview covers the two features separately.
Choose whether to improve or restrict snippets
If your goal is a more accurate preview, improve the page and its meta description while leaving snippets available. If your goal is to limit excerpts from a page in Google Search, use the narrowest directive that fits the requirement. These controls affect what Google may show; they do not give you control over the final search presentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Control | Effect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
nosnippet |
Prevents Google from showing snippets for the page, including regular and featured snippets. | Google identifies this as the directive for blocking snippets. |
max-snippet:[number] |
Sets a maximum snippet length. | A lower limit may make a featured snippet less likely if there is not enough text for a useful answer, but it does not guarantee exclusion. |
data-nosnippet |
Marks selected text that should not appear in regular or featured snippets. | Use it when the restriction should apply to particular text rather than the entire page. |
Google’s snippet controls documentation describes these directives. If nosnippet and data-nosnippet are both present, nosnippet takes priority. Google does not specify a fixed minimum snippet length: the amount needed varies with the information, language, and platform. Choose a restriction with the understanding that less excerpted page text may appear in Search.

Write answer passages that deserve to be shown
- Put the relevant answer in visible page text and support it with enough context for a reader to understand it.
- Keep the meta description specific to that page; summarize its most relevant points rather than repeating keywords or making promises about what Search will display.
- Do not sacrifice accuracy or context to try to trigger an extraction. Google applies feature policies to featured snippets, including restrictions on several categories of harmful or deceptive content.
- For public-interest subjects, keep factual claims consistent with well-established or expert consensus. Google says unsupported claims accusing individuals or groups of serious wrongdoing may be removed from featured snippets.
Google’s featured-snippet policies explain the feature-specific restrictions. They are not a substitute for general search-result or site policies.

Use Search Console to monitor and optimize your site’s presence in Google Search, as recommended in the SEO Starter Guide. Check actual queries and the previews shown for them; if a snippet is unclear or misleading, revise the relevant page content or description rather than assuming one version will appear for every search.
Google says changes can take from hours to several months to appear and suggests waiting a few weeks to assess whether changes helped. Results are not guaranteed. There is no published fixed snippet length that ensures a particular preview.
