Brave Search is the clearest documented option for avoiding Google-sourced results, provided you check that its optional Google fallback is disabled. Kagi is a capable privacy-oriented service, but its own documentation says it combines its indexes with anonymized requests to traditional search indexes, so it is not a strictly independent source. The key is to evaluate two separate issues: where a service gets its web index and how it handles your searches.
What “doesn’t rely on Google’s results” actually means
Search alternatives are often described as “private” or “independent” as though those words mean the same thing. They do not. A service can reduce personal tracking while still obtaining some links from a large outside index. Conversely, a service can maintain its own crawler index while collecting signals that you may not want to share.
For this topic, ask two questions separately:
- Index provenance: Who crawled, stored and ranked the pages that appear in the result?
- Data practices: What does the search service record, retain or use to improve its index?
If your requirement is specifically “no Google-sourced results,” privacy claims alone are not enough. You need a provider that documents its own index and you must check for any setting that can add results from Google or another external service.
Why the distinction matters in practice
Search has several stages: a crawler discovers pages, an index stores information about them, ranking systems order candidate pages, and the interface presents links or answers. A company can control one stage without controlling all of them. Saying that a service has an “independent index” is therefore narrower than saying it has no outside inputs, no shared infrastructure or no data exchange.

For a household, newsroom or organization, write the requirement at the level you actually need. “Do not personalize results with my account history” is a privacy requirement. “Do not return links obtained from Google” is an index-provenance requirement. “Do not send any query to another provider” is a data-routing requirement. They may lead to different choices.
At a glance: the documented options
| Service | What its documentation says about the index | Google-result risk | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Brave says its results are served from an index it creates and states: “The index we create is independent of other search engines.” Brave Search product page and index documentation | Its privacy notice describes an optional setting that anonymously checks Google and mixes those results. Disable or avoid that setting if independence is mandatory. Privacy notice | Readers who want the clearest documented path to a non-Google index, with a settings check. |
| Kagi Search | Kagi says it uses its own indexes as well as anonymized requests to traditional search indexes. Kagi’s comparison documentation | Because sources can vary by query, it is not established as wholly independent from Google or every other provider. | Readers who value Kagi’s interface and privacy approach and accept a mixed-source model. |
These descriptions come from the providers themselves, not from a neutral audit. They establish how each service describes its sourcing, but they do not prove that one service is universally more relevant, faster or more complete for every language, location or query.
Brave Search: the strongest documented match for strict independence
Its independent-index claim
Brave’s search documentation says its results are served from the index it creates. Its index page explicitly states, “The index we create is independent of other search engines.” That is the clearest provider statement in the available documentation for readers trying to avoid Google’s result index. Read the current wording at Brave Search’s index and right-to-be-forgotten page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Independent” describes the index source; it does not mean every page is discovered without outside data, nor does it guarantee identical coverage in every country or language. Brave’s product page lists supported languages, and both coverage and availability can change. Check the live service for the language and region in which you search: brave.com/search.
What the claim does and does not establish
- It supports treating Brave as a separate index rather than assuming that its normal results are simply a repackaged Google page.
- It does not constitute a third-party audit of crawling, ranking, infrastructure or every result shown.
- It does not promise that Brave will have the newest page, the most complete local listings or the same results in every market.
- It does not override a user-enabled feature that adds results from another service.
For a compliance record, save the URL, the wording you reviewed and the date. Provider documentation and interface labels can change, so a written policy should identify the accepted version and the settings that must remain enabled or disabled.
Check the optional Google fallback before relying on it
Brave’s privacy notice describes a feature that can anonymously check Google and mix those results into the page. That means a default installation or a later preference change could make a search page partly dependent on Google even though Brave maintains its own index.
- Open Brave Search and go to its settings or privacy preferences. The exact labels can change as the service is updated.
- Look for wording about Google fallback, checking Google, or mixing results from another search engine.
- Turn that option off if your rule is “no Google-sourced results.”
- Save the setting, then run a new search in a private window or a fresh session to confirm that the preference persists.
- Recheck after major service updates, account migrations or browser-profile resets; provider interfaces and defaults can change.
If the setting is unavailable in your region or account, treat the current documentation as the authority and contact Brave support rather than assuming that the fallback is disabled.

A feature that changes ranking is not automatically a feature that changes the index. For example, a community ranking model can reorder candidate pages while the underlying documents still come from the same Brave index. Conversely, an external fallback can add documents from another provider even if the page looks like a normal Brave result. Check both kinds of controls independently.

Understand the Web Discovery Project trade-off
Brave describes its Web Discovery Project as using de-identified queries and browsing signals to help grow its index. The provider characterizes the project as privacy-preserving, but that description is not an independent audit finding. Participation therefore presents a separate choice from the Google-fallback setting:
- You can prefer an independently built index while declining to contribute additional signals.
- You can review the project’s current explanation and opt-in controls before participating.
- You should not infer from “de-identified” that no data is ever processed; read the current notice for the applicable collection and retention details.
The project information is dated April 29, 2025 in Brave’s Help Center. Read the current page and settings at What is the Web Discovery Project in Brave?.
Do not treat index independence and signal contribution as a single yes-or-no privacy score. Someone may accept de-identified contributions to improve coverage but refuse external result mixing. Another person may do the opposite. Record each choice separately.

Brave Help describes Goggles as community-created alternative ranking models. Goggles can let you apply a different ranking approach to a search rather than accepting only the default ordering. They are a ranking feature, not proof that the underlying pages came from a different index. Availability, names and behavior can change, so consult the current Brave Search Help Pages before building a workflow around a particular Goggle.
When testing a Goggle, compare the same query with the feature on and off. Note which pages move, disappear or appear, and keep the selected Goggle name with your test record. This helps distinguish a ranking preference from a change in source provenance.
Kagi Search: privacy-focused, but mixed-source
Why Kagi does not meet a strict “independent index only” rule
Kagi’s own comparison documentation says it uses a combination of its indexes and anonymized requests to traditional search indexes. That makes Kagi a mixed-source service. A mixed-source design may provide useful breadth or coverage, but it prevents a blanket statement that every result is independent of Google or all other major providers.
Use Kagi when your priority is its search experience and privacy model and you accept that the source can differ by query. Do not present it as a wholly Google-free index unless Kagi documents a specific mode that meets that requirement for the searches you perform. The provider’s explanation is at Kagi vs. Brave Search.
How to make a mixed-source service fit your policy
If you are evaluating Kagi for a household, school or business policy, write the policy precisely. “We do not want behaviorally targeted advertising” is different from “No result may originate from Google.” For the latter, ask Kagi whether it can identify and disable every traditional-index request for your account and region. If it cannot, classify it as non-compliant rather than guessing from its privacy language.

Ask for an answer that covers ordinary web searches, image or news features, language-specific requests and any temporary fallback used when a result is missing. If the provider cannot expose that distinction to you, retain the mixed-source classification in your documentation.
How to test whether an alternative meets your needs
No neutral head-to-head relevance study was established for these services, so choose based on your own recurring searches instead of a universal quality ranking. A short, repeatable test exposes differences that generic reviews miss.
Build a representative query set
- Three local or regional searches, using the city, language and spelling you normally use.
- Three technical or professional questions where current documentation matters.
- Two shopping or product-research searches, if those are part of your routine.
- Two obscure names, older pages or specialist topics that test long-tail coverage.
- One news or rapidly changing query, noting the date and time.
Use the same spelling, quotation marks, filters and safe-search choices on each service. Keep queries that represent actual work rather than deliberately obscure “gotcha” searches. If children, colleagues or customers will use the service, include their common tasks too.
Record source and usefulness, not just the first link
- Run each query without signing in, then repeat it in your normal account context if you intend to use one.
- Record the first page of results, visible labels, answer boxes and the date.
- Mark whether the result answers the question, comes from an authoritative source and is current enough for the task.
- For Brave, confirm the Google-fallback preference before testing. For Kagi, treat the documented mixed-source model as part of the result provenance.
- Repeat the test for your important language and region; do not generalize from an English-language test in one country.
Also note practical friction: whether local intent is understood, whether dates are clear, whether duplicate pages crowd out alternatives and whether you can tell why a result was selected. These observations are useful for your workflow but are not a universal ranking of either provider.
This method tells you which service works for your workload. It does not establish a worldwide winner, because rankings can change by query, location, language, time and personalization.
Decision guide: which option fits which requirement?
| Your requirement | Practical choice | Reason and condition |
|---|---|---|
| No documented dependence on Google’s result index | Brave Search | Its provider documentation describes an independent index. Disable the optional Google checking and mixing setting, then verify the current preference. |
| Privacy-oriented search, with source mixing acceptable | Kagi | Kagi documents a combination of its own indexes and anonymized traditional-index requests. It is not a strict independent-index answer. |
| Alternative ranking models | Brave Search with Goggles | Brave Help describes Goggles as community-created ranking models. They change ranking, not necessarily index provenance. |
| Best results for a specific language or region | Test both services | Coverage varies, and the available documentation does not establish a neutral regional comparison. |
| A formal procurement or compliance requirement | Request current written sourcing details | Provider documentation can change and is not an independent audit. Record the version, date and settings that your policy accepts. |
What about cost?
The provider material considered here does not establish a current, comparable price schedule for these services. Do not infer that privacy, an independent index or a mixed-source design is free or paid. Check each provider’s current terms directly if subscription cost, seat count or procurement approval affects your decision.
Common mistakes when leaving Google
Confusing privacy with index independence
Blocking trackers or avoiding an account does not tell you where the links came from. Always look for an explicit index-sourcing statement and any external-result setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming “own index” means “no outside data”
An index provider may use crawlers, user-submitted pages, public datasets or browsing signals while still maintaining its own search index. Read the provider’s explanation instead of expanding “independent” into claims it does not make.

Forgetting fallback and feature settings
An optional fallback can change the answer to your core question. Settings can also be reset when you clear browser data, switch profiles or move between devices. Include a preference check in your setup checklist.
Declaring a quality winner from a few searches
Search quality is task-dependent. A service that is excellent for technical documentation may be less useful for local results in another language. Keep a small test log and revisit it when your search needs or the provider changes.
Treating provider language as independent verification
Brave’s independent-index sentence and Kagi’s mixed-source description are attributable statements from those companies. They are useful evidence about each provider’s stated design, not a third-party audit or benchmark.
Assuming a familiar interface means familiar sourcing
Two services can display similar blue links, snippets and answer panels while using different indexes or a mixture of sources. Judge provenance from documentation and settings, not visual similarity.
Testing only one device or browser profile
A preference saved in one profile may not follow you to another. If several people use the service, check the setting in each profile and document the expected configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy questions to ask before switching
- Are searches stored, and for how long?
- Are queries linked to an account, IP address or device identifier?
- Can optional discovery or improvement projects be declined?
- Does the service send an anonymized request to another index for some queries?
- What controls exist for deleting a result, objecting to crawling or requesting removal?
For Brave, read the current privacy notice, the index and removal information, and the Web Discovery Project description together. Looking at only one page can hide an important setting or data-flow qualification.
For a team, convert the answers into a short checklist: approved service, prohibited fallback, permitted signal contribution, account rules, review date and contact for exceptions. That is more reliable than telling users simply to “use a private search engine.”

A practical setup checklist
- Define your requirement in one sentence: “No Google-sourced results,” “reduced tracking,” or another measurable rule.
- Choose Brave if you need the clearest documented independent-index claim; choose Kagi only if a mixed-source model is acceptable.
- Read the current provider documentation linked above and note the date you reviewed it.
- Disable Brave’s optional Google checking and result mixing if your rule excludes Google.
- Review Brave’s Web Discovery Project controls and decide whether to contribute signals.
- Run your representative query set in the language and region you use.
- Record failures: missing local pages, stale documents, poor language handling or unwanted external-result behavior.
- Recheck settings and documentation after major updates or when your privacy policy changes.
For formal use, add an owner and review interval. A dated screenshot or written note can show which fallback and contribution controls were selected when the service was approved.

Bottom line for choosing a Google alternative
For a strict requirement that results not come from Google’s index, Brave Search is the clearest documented candidate in this comparison, but only after you inspect and disable its optional Google fallback. Kagi is a mixed-source service: its own documentation supports privacy and a distinct search experience, yet it does not establish an entirely independent index. Neither provider has a neutral, universal quality verdict here. Test the searches, languages and regions that matter to you, and keep index provenance separate from privacy settings when making the decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Brave Search completely independent of Google?
Brave says, “The index we create is independent of other search engines.” However, its privacy notice describes an optional feature that anonymously checks Google and mixes those results. Disable that setting and verify it after updates if no Google-sourced result is acceptable.
Does Kagi use Google results?
Kagi documents a combination of its own indexes and anonymized requests to traditional search indexes. That mixed-source description means Kagi should not be presented as wholly independent from Google or every other provider without a specific, documented mode that meets your policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a private search engine automatically independent?
No. Privacy concerns how searches and identifiers are handled; index independence concerns where result pages come from. Evaluate both separately.
What is Brave’s Web Discovery Project?
Brave describes it as using de-identified queries and browsing signals to help grow its index. The Help Center page is dated April 29, 2025. Review the current explanation and opt-in controls before participating; the provider’s privacy-preserving description is not an independent audit.
Do Brave Goggles create a separate search index?
No. Brave Help describes Goggles as community-created alternative ranking models. They can change ordering, but they are not proof that the underlying pages came from a different index.
Which service has the best results?
There is no neutral, universal comparison established here. Test recurring searches in your own language, region and professional or local context. Relevance can change by query, date, location and personalization.
How can an organization verify a search service?
Define whether the rule concerns Google-sourced results, external query routing, personalization or tracking. Save the provider’s current sourcing statement, check fallback settings, record the review date and rerun representative queries. Request written clarification for any requirement the documentation does not answer.
Are current prices or affiliate terms established for these services?
No comparable price schedule or affiliate arrangement is established here. Check each provider directly for current subscription, account and commercial terms before procurement or monetized linking.
The Bottom Line
Choose Brave Search for the clearest documented independent-index position, then disable its optional Google fallback. Choose Kagi only when its mixed-source model fits your policy, and test both services for the languages, regions and queries you actually use.
