To turn off personalized ads on Google Search, use the procedure that matches your sign-in state. When you are signed in, open My Ad Center, choose Off next to Personalized ads, and confirm. When you are signed out, open Google Ad Settings, select Search, switch Personalized ads on Google Search off, and confirm.
Turning personalization off does not remove advertisements. Google can still use contextual signals, such as your current search and location, to select an ad. The signed-in control follows your Google Account across Google services on devices where you are signed in; the signed-out Search control applies to the browser or device where you changed it.
Choose the right Google Search ad setting
Google has two procedures because ad controls have different scopes. First determine whether the browser is currently signed in to a Google Account.

These controls manage whether Google uses saved account information and activity to personalize ads. They do not disable all forms of personalization in Google Search, and they do not control advertising delivered by unrelated ad platforms.

How to turn off personalized ads when signed in
The signed-in setting is the appropriate choice when you want one account-level decision to apply wherever you use that account on Google services.
- Open My Ad Center while signed in to the Google Account whose ads you want to change.
- Find Personalized ads.
- Select Off.
- Confirm the selection when Google asks you to do so.
Google says this choice applies to ads on its services across devices where you are signed in. If a phone, tablet, or computer uses a different Google Account, that device is not covered by the decision for your first account. Check the active account before changing the switch.
What the signed-in switch changes
With personalized ads off, Google says it will not use information and activity saved to your Google Account, or your choices in My Ad Center, to show you personalized ads. The change concerns ad personalization; it is not a command to erase your Search history, YouTube history, or other account data.
Changing the setting back on
You can return to My Ad Center, select On next to Personalized ads, and confirm if you later want account information and activity to be used for ad personalization again. The same account-level scope applies when you turn the setting back on.
How to turn off personalized Search ads when signed out
Use the signed-out route when you are not logged in and want to change Search advertising for the browser or device in use.
- Open Google Ad Settings.
- Select Search.
- Find Personalized ads on Google Search.
- Switch the setting to Off.
- Confirm the change.
Google describes this signed-out choice as applying to Search ads for the current browser or device. It does not become a universal account preference because no account is being used to carry the setting to other devices.
If the signed-out control is unavailable
Google notes that the control may be unavailable when the browser or device blocks the cookies needed for the signed-out preference. Review the browser’s cookie and site-data settings for Google, then reopen Ad Settings. If you later clear the relevant site data, use a different browser profile, or move to another device, you may need to set the signed-out preference again because the setting is tied to the browser or device rather than an account.
Private-browsing windows, hardened privacy profiles, and extensions that automatically remove site data can also make a signed-out preference appear not to persist. The important distinction is scope: the setting is associated with the local browser or device state, not with a Google Account that can synchronize it elsewhere.
What turning personalization off actually does
The switch limits the information Google uses to tailor ads. It does not create an ad-free Search page. Ads can still be selected using contextual factors that are associated with the immediate request rather than a saved advertising profile.

Why a related ad can still appear
Google gives current searches and location as examples of contextual factors. For example, someone can ask to see fewer ads about jewelry and still see an earring advertisement after searching for earrings. The ad can be relevant to the query even when account-based ad personalization is disabled.
Location can affect which businesses or services are eligible for an impression, while the wording of the query can make a product category immediately relevant. Those contextual signals explain why a change may not produce an obvious visual difference on every results page.
Recommended Free Tools
This distinction explains why turning the switch off may not produce an obvious visual change in every search. The setting changes the type of information used for personalization; it does not remove the advertising space or prevent an ad from matching the words and context of the search.
What is not removed
- Search advertisements themselves remain.
- Contextual signals, including the current search and location, can still influence which ad appears.
- Google Account history and other saved activity are not automatically deleted by this switch.
- Personalized recommendations in Google Search are controlled separately.
- Ads served by unrelated advertising platforms are outside these Google ad settings.
Manage topics, brands, and sensitive subjects separately
My Ad Center includes more granular controls in addition to the main personalized-ads switch. You can adjust the topics and brands you prefer to see, and limit ads about certain sensitive topics where those controls are offered.
Topic and brand preferences are not blocks
Choosing fewer ads about a topic or brand expresses a preference; it does not guarantee that every related ad will disappear. Google’s customization guidance says that customizing your ads does not block ad topics or brands. A relevant search can still produce an ad connected with a topic you reduced.
For instance, reducing a brand preference may lower how often that brand is selected based on your preferences, but a direct search for the brand can still make a related ad relevant. Treat the control as a way to influence frequency, not as a filter that removes a category from Search.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use these controls when you want to tune the kinds of ads you encounter while leaving personalization on, or when you want additional preferences after switching personalization off. They are not a substitute for the global Personalized ads switch.
When to use each control
| Your goal | Control to use | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Stop using saved account information and activity for personalized ads | Personalized ads | Google no longer uses that account-based information for ad personalization, but contextual ads remain possible |
| See fewer ads associated with a topic or brand | Topic or brand preference in My Ad Center | Frequency may decrease; related ads can still appear |
| Limit ads about an available sensitive topic | Sensitive-topic control in My Ad Center | Google applies the selected limitation within the scope it describes |
| Change personalized Search suggestions or recommendations | Search recommendations setting | Changes recommendations, not the separate ad-personalization switch |
Ad personalization and Search recommendations are different
Turning off the use of activity for ads does not turn off personalized recommendations in Google Search. Google documents a separate recommendations setting for that feature.
This matters when your goal is to reduce personalization everywhere you notice it. The ad switch governs how Google selects advertisements. Search recommendations govern features such as personalized suggestions and recommendation behavior in Search. Changing one does not silently change the other.

How to decide what to change
- If your concern is the ads shown beside or above results, change Personalized ads in My Ad Center or the signed-out Search control.
- If your concern is suggested searches or personalized recommendation features, look for the separate Search recommendations setting.
- If you want to remove previously saved activity, use Google’s account data controls; the ad switch alone is not a deletion command.
Understand the scope across devices and browsers
The most common source of confusion is assuming that every Google ad setting is global. Scope depends on whether an account is involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSigned-in scope
A signed-in My Ad Center choice is associated with the Google Account. Google says it applies to Google services across devices where you are signed in. If you use several accounts in the same browser, each account can have its own setting. Verify the account avatar before making the change.
This does not mean every browser session on a shared computer automatically has the same status. A session signed in to the selected account can use its account-level choice; a signed-out session is governed by its local signed-out preference, if one exists.
Signed-out scope
A signed-out Search choice is stored for and applies to the browser or device used to change it. Another browser, a separate browser profile, or another device may not share the preference. Cookie blocking can also prevent the setting from being available.
Mixed-use examples
- You turn personalization off in My Ad Center on a laptop while signed in. The same account’s Google services on a signed-in phone follow that account-level choice.
- You change the signed-out Search setting in one browser. A second browser on the same computer may not use that preference.
- You search while signed in to one account but later switch to another. The account-level ad setting can differ between those sessions.
- You clear cookies after changing a signed-out preference. The browser may no longer retain the choice, so check Ad Settings again.
Why you still see ads after switching personalization off
The ad matches the current query
Contextual matching can use the words in the search itself. Searching for a product, service, or location can therefore produce a related ad even when saved account activity is not being used for personalization.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Your preference is topic-based, not a block
A reduced topic or brand preference lowers the expected frequency of related ads; it does not guarantee that none will appear. A direct, relevant search can still make a related advertisement eligible.
You changed a different scope
If you changed a signed-out browser setting but are now signed in, or changed one Google Account while using another, the current session may be governed by a different preference. Return to the procedure that matches the current sign-in state.
The ad comes from another platform
Google’s ad settings do not govern ads delivered by unrelated ad platforms. On Google partner sites and apps, the effect of these controls can also depend on browser or device settings. Seeing an ad outside Google Search is not proof that the Search preference failed.
Google’s controls are therefore best understood as service-specific choices. They govern the Google surfaces and scope named in the setting, not every advertisement encountered across the web or inside every app.

Troubleshooting checklist
Use this sequence when the switch is missing, appears not to save, or the ads do not change as expected.
- Check sign-in status. If you are signed in, use My Ad Center. If you are signed out, use Google Ad Settings and select Search.
- Check the exact control. The signed-out label is Personalized ads on Google Search; the account-level label is Personalized ads in My Ad Center.
- Confirm the choice. Complete the confirmation step instead of closing the page immediately after moving the switch.
- Check the active account. On a shared computer or a browser with multiple accounts, make sure the intended account is selected.
- Check browser cookies. If the signed-out control is unavailable, review whether cookies or Google site data are being blocked.
- Test the correct surface. The setting concerns Google Search ads and Google services within its stated scope; it is not a universal ad blocker for every website or app.
- Separate ads from recommendations. If the problem is personalized Search suggestions rather than advertisements, change the separate Search recommendations setting.
- Check after a profile change. A new browser profile, cleared site data, or another device may not have the signed-out preference you set earlier.
What these controls mean for privacy
The practical privacy choice is whether Google may use information saved to your account and your My Ad Center choices to personalize ads. Turning that use off reduces account-based ad personalization, while contextual advertising can continue.
This is a narrower decision than disabling all Google personalization or deleting all activity. Treat the controls as separate layers: ad personalization, topic and brand preferences, Search recommendations, and account data management each address a different behavior.
That separation lets you choose a proportionate setting. Someone who only wants fewer ads based on account activity can turn off personalized ads without changing recommendations. Someone who wants fewer ads about a particular subject can adjust a topic preference, while understanding that a preference does not block every related result.

Will turning off personalization remove Google Search ads?
No. Ads can remain because Google may use contextual factors such as the current search and location. The setting changes whether saved account information and activity are used for ad personalization; it does not remove ad placements.
Does the signed-in setting work on my other devices?
Google says the My Ad Center choice applies to ads on Google services across devices where the same Google Account is signed in. A different account, or a signed-out session, can have a different setting.
Does the signed-out setting follow me to another browser?
No. Google describes it as applying to the current browser or device. A different browser, profile, or device may require its own setting, and blocked or cleared cookies can remove the local preference.
Why do I still see an ad for a topic I reduced?
Topic and brand controls express a preference rather than a complete block. A relevant query, such as searching directly for a product, can still make an associated ad eligible.

Does turning off ad personalization delete my Search history?
No. The ad switch controls the use of saved information and activity for ad personalization. It is not a request to delete Search history or other account data; use Google’s separate account data controls for deletion.
Why are my Search suggestions still personalized?
Search recommendations are controlled separately from ad personalization. Turning off activity use for ads does not automatically turn off personalized Search recommendations.
Do these settings control ads on every website and app?
No. Google’s ad settings do not govern unrelated advertising platforms. On Google partner sites and apps, the effect can also depend on browser or device settings.
