Google Reader Revenue Manager (RRM) lets an eligible publisher add subscription or contribution prompts, newsletter signups, surveys, reader registration, and subscription checkout to an existing website. You configure it through Google Publisher Center; it does not build a website or replace your CMS. Full payment features are country-specific, and setup requires publisher identification, a publication logo, a Google Payments Center profile, bank details, and an RRM snippet installed on the pages where prompts should appear.
This guide explains eligibility, supported countries, the complete setup sequence, pricing and fees, payment permissions, WordPress installation choices, and the limits that matter before you put a plan live.
What Google Reader Revenue Manager does
Reader Revenue Manager is a Publisher Center service for turning reader engagement into actions such as subscriptions or contributions. It can also display non-monetization prompts for newsletter signup, surveys, and reader registration. The service supplies the prompt and payment workflow; your publication still needs a working website, content, and a CMS or template system in which Google’s code can be installed.
Publisher Center is a configuration tool, not a content-management system. Adding a publication there does not create pages, host articles, or give you permission to change payment-account information. Those responsibilities remain with your site platform and your Google Payments Center access.

Subscription versus contribution
| Approach | What the reader does | What the publisher configures | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Agrees to recurring charges in exchange for continuing access or other defined subscriber value. | A recurring plan, price, billing period, optional trial, and the pages or products covered by the plan. | The plan must be set to Live before its prompt can appear. |
| Contribution | Makes a payment generally associated with an exchange of value, rather than a recurring subscription commitment. | A contribution prompt and the associated product settings. | RRM does not process voluntary donations. |
| Engagement prompt | Signs up for a newsletter, registers, or answers a survey without paying through RRM. | A non-monetization prompt and its display conditions. | Payment setup is not required for the engagement action itself. |
Use the word contribution for the RRM payment product. Google’s documentation distinguishes a contribution from a voluntary donation. A nonprofit that wants to collect donations must use a custom call to action (CTA) that sends readers to its existing donation platform; subscription and contribution CTAs are disabled in the nonprofit RRM interface.
Who is eligible, and where payments work
Google says Reader Revenue Manager is available in more than 40 countries, but availability is not uniform. The full setup supports subscription and contribution payments in the countries below. A second group can use engagement features but not monetization payments according to Google’s supported-country documentation. Check the current Google list before opening a payment profile because country rules can change.
Countries with subscription and contribution payment support
| Region grouping | Countries |
|---|---|
| Americas | Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, United States |
| Europe | Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom |
| Asia-Pacific and Middle East | Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Vietnam |
The list contains 49 countries in the categories above. “Full support” means Google documents subscription and contribution payments there; it does not guarantee that every payment method, tax treatment, or payout rule is identical in every market.
Countries with engagement features only
Google lists Bangladesh, Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates as supporting engagement features only. Publishers in these locations can use features such as registration, surveys, or newsletter prompts, but monetization payments are not supported according to that help page.
Organization and identity requirements
For payment prompts, the onboarding flow asks for personal or business information, proof of identity or organization, a publication logo, and a declaration of whether the organization is for-profit or nonprofit. Google recommends a PNG or JPEG logo at 1,000 × 1,000 pixels; 512 × 512 pixels is the stated minimum. Use a square, legible mark because this asset is used in the reader-facing payment experience.
What you need before starting
- A publication added to Google Publisher Center.
- Publisher or organization information and identity documentation suitable for the payment-prompt onboarding flow.
- A square publication logo in PNG or JPEG format, preferably 1,000 × 1,000 pixels and no smaller than 512 × 512 pixels.
- A Google Payments Center profile connected to the Google Account that manages the publication.
- Bank details entered in Payments Center for payouts.
- Permission to edit the relevant CMS theme, template, or site code.
- A decision about whether you are offering a subscription, requesting a contribution, or using an engagement-only prompt.
- For a subscription, the price, billing interval, trial policy, discount policy, and pages or products that should be covered.
Publisher Center ownership is not the same as Payments Center authority. Someone who can manage a publication may still be unable to change bank details, payout methods, tax details, or payment-profile users unless that person has explicit Payments Center permissions.

How to set up Reader Revenue Manager
- Add the publication. In Google Publisher Center, add and complete the publication you want to monetize or use for engagement prompts.
- Open RRM for that publication. Select the publication in Publisher Center and open Reader Revenue Manager.
- Choose a prompt. Select a content-access prompt first. You can add other prompts later, including registration, newsletter, survey, contribution, or subscription experiences where your country and organization type support them.
- Configure the prompt. Enter the text, display behavior, and reader action. If the prompt involves payment, create or select the relevant pricing plan.
- Create the payment profile. Set up or connect a Google Payments Center Business or Individual profile. Complete identity or organization verification and add the bank account that should receive payouts.
- Install the site snippet. Copy the RRM code supplied for the selected configuration and place it on the appropriate pages. The person installing it needs permission to edit the CMS theme or template code.
- Make the plan live. Subscription plans begin as drafts. Set a plan to Live; a draft plan does not appear on the site and its product configuration will not load as an active offer.
- Check the live reader path. Open an article in a clean browser session, verify that the intended prompt appears, and test the reader journey through registration or checkout without assuming that a saved draft is publicly active.
Open-access and product-ID snippets
Google distinguishes between two code patterns:
- Open-access snippet: Use this on articles that remain open under a paywall, or across all articles when you are using contributions or surveys.
- Product-ID snippet: Use this on pages that should be paywalled for a specific subscription product.
The snippet must match a live plan. If you change a plan or product ID, the CMS Sync code may also need to be updated; otherwise the page can continue referencing an old product or fail to load the intended prompt.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →WordPress installation: Site Kit or manual code
Google recommends integrating RRM on WordPress through Site Kit. This route is useful when the person managing the site prefers a guided connection rather than editing theme files directly.
Use Site Kit when
- You can install and authorize the plugin on the WordPress site.
- The site is not built entirely on AMP.
- You want the Google-supported integration path to connect the publication and insert the required code.
Google’s WordPress documentation says not to use RRM if the entire site is built on AMP. That restriction is separate from having some AMP versions or templates; verify your site architecture before enabling the service.
Use WPCode when Site Kit is not available
If Site Kit cannot be used, Google’s help documentation describes adding the RRM snippet through the third-party WPCode plugin. Insert the exact snippet supplied by RRM in the location recommended for your configuration, then publish the code and test a page that should display the prompt. Do not paste a product-ID snippet onto pages intended to remain open, and do not assume an old product ID will follow a renamed or replaced plan.
Plans, billing periods, trials, and discounts
Publishers choose the amount and recurrence. Google documents monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual recurring periods. The available trial choices are no trial, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or 60 days.
| Plan setting | Choices or rule documented by Google | Operational effect |
|---|---|---|
| Billing period | Monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annual | The reader is charged automatically when the selected period elapses. |
| Trial | No trial, 7, 14, 30, or 60 days | The reader starts with the selected trial treatment before recurring billing begins under the plan terms. |
| Status | Draft or Live | Only a Live plan appears on the site. |
| Price | Publisher-defined | Choose an amount appropriate to your market and the value you provide. Google’s $10 monthly and $100 annual figures are examples, not recommendations or current market rates. |
| Discount | Configurable for subscriptions | Use a discount policy deliberately; document which readers qualify and how the offer interacts with a trial. |
| Product ID | Created for the product | The Product ID on a live plan cannot be edited. Create or use the correct product before publishing. |
Google says most fields of a live plan can be edited, but the Product ID cannot. A price change to a live plan applies to new subscribers. The reviewed help material describes changes affecting current subscribers as future functionality, so do not promise existing customers that a live-plan edit will retroactively change their billing.

How much does Reader Revenue Manager cost?
Google’s getting-started help page states: “It’s just 5% per transaction, including credit card fees.” The retrieved page does not display a publication year. Treat 5% as Google’s published statement, not as a guarantee that every country, payment method, tax, or contract receives identical treatment; the documentation reviewed does not explain geographic exceptions or a separate fee schedule.
For a simple calculation, a $10 transaction would leave $9.50 after a 5% fee, before any taxes or other obligations that may apply to your business. That arithmetic illustrates the percentage only; it is not a promise about your payout currency, tax withholding, settlement timing, or bank charges.
Google’s documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal payout schedule or minimum payout threshold. Consult the current Payments Center information and applicable terms for the account’s country rather than budgeting around an assumed number.

Receiving payments and managing permissions
- Create or connect a Payments Center profile. Choose a Business or Individual profile as appropriate for the organization.
- Complete verification. Supply the requested identity or organization evidence. Indian publishers should note that Google’s payment-profile guidance does not accept a digital PAN card as verification proof; it requests an original photo or scanned copy of the physical PAN card.
- Add bank details. Enter the account that should receive RRM payouts before expecting funds to be transferred.
- Grant the right access. Ensure the people who need to edit bank, tax, payout, or payment-profile-user information have explicit Payments Center permissions.
- Review country-specific instructions. Payment availability and verification requirements can vary by location, so use the current Payments Center screens and terms for the profile’s country.
One payment profile can cover multiple publications belonging to the same organization, provided it is tied to a Google Account and configured with the required permissions. A publication manager who lacks Payments Center access may be able to edit prompts but still be unable to fix a bank-account or tax-detail problem.
Choosing a monetization or engagement approach
Use a subscription paywall when
- Your country supports RRM payments.
- You can define a continuing exchange of value, such as access to protected articles or subscriber benefits.
- You are prepared to maintain recurring billing plans and explain trial, renewal, cancellation, and discount terms to readers.
Use a contribution request when
- You want readers to make a payment associated with an exchange of value without selecting a recurring subscription.
- Your organization and country are eligible for contribution payments.
- You will describe the request as a contribution rather than a voluntary donation.
Use an engagement-only prompt when
- Your country is listed for engagement features only.
- You want newsletter registrations, surveys, or reader registration without collecting money through RRM.
- You are a nonprofit that wants to direct readers to an external donation platform through a custom CTA.
There is no need to force every reader into a payment prompt. RRM allows additional prompts later, so a publication can begin with registration or newsletter growth, then introduce a subscription or contribution workflow when payment eligibility, content packaging, and support processes are ready.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
The prompt does not appear
- Confirm that the selected plan is Live, not Draft.
- Verify that the snippet is installed on the page type intended for that prompt.
- Check whether the snippet is open-access or product-ID based; using the wrong type can target the wrong articles.
- Clear caching or optimization layers after publishing the code, then test in a private browser window.
The site references the wrong product
Compare the product ID in the page code with the current live plan. If the plan or product ID changed, update the CMS Sync code as Google’s documentation requires. A live plan’s Product ID cannot be edited, so a replacement plan may be necessary.

The publisher can edit prompts but not payment details
Check Payments Center permissions separately from Publisher Center ownership. Bank details, payout method, tax details, and payment-profile users require explicit Payments Center access.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Payments are unavailable during setup
Check the publication’s country against Google’s current supported-country list. A country in the engagement-only group can use reader-registration, survey, or newsletter features but cannot activate subscription or contribution payments through RRM.
WordPress code conflicts with the site
Prefer Site Kit when the site meets Google’s documented requirements. If you use WPCode instead, verify that the snippet is inserted once in the intended template location and that a caching or security plugin is not stripping it. Do not use RRM on a site built entirely on AMP, as Google’s WordPress guidance advises against that configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the documentation does not promise
- A universal payout date or minimum payout threshold.
- Identical fees or payment methods in every supported country.
- Automatic authority for every Publisher Center owner to edit Payments Center information.
- Voluntary donation processing through RRM.
- Retroactive repricing of existing subscribers when a live plan’s price is edited.
- A website, CMS, hosting, or article-authoring system supplied by Publisher Center.
Those limits are operational decisions, not minor wording details. Confirm them in the current Google Payments Center interface and terms for your organization before announcing a paid offer.
Reader Revenue Manager FAQ
Is Reader Revenue Manager a CMS?
No. It is a Publisher Center service that configures reader prompts, payment plans, and engagement features on an existing site. You still need a CMS or template system and permission to install the RRM code.
Can a nonprofit collect donations with RRM?
Not directly. RRM does not support voluntary donations. A nonprofit can create a custom, non-monetization CTA that sends readers to its existing donation platform; subscription and contribution CTAs are disabled in the nonprofit interface.

Can I change a subscription price after publishing?
Google says most live-plan fields can be edited, but the Product ID cannot. A price change applies to new subscribers. The reviewed documentation does not describe current-subscriber changes as available functionality, so check the current product behavior before making an offer.
Do I need a bank account before enabling a payment prompt?
You need a Google Payments Center profile and bank details to receive payouts. Add the bank information before expecting money to be transferred, and make sure the person entering it has Payments Center permission rather than only Publisher Center access.
Which WordPress installation method should I use?
Google recommends Site Kit. If Site Kit cannot be used, Google documents WPCode as an alternative route for inserting the snippet. A site built entirely on AMP should not use RRM under Google’s WordPress guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Google take to pay publishers?
The reviewed Google documentation does not state a universal payout schedule or minimum threshold. Check the current Payments Center information and terms for your profile’s country.
Does the 5% fee apply in every country and to every payment method?
Google’s getting-started page says, “It’s just 5% per transaction, including credit card fees.” That page does not show a publication year or explain geographic, payment-method, or contract exceptions, so verify the terms attached to your account.
