Google is showing inline links more prominently and in more AI-generated search answers. The change affects AI Overviews and AI Mode, where links can appear beside the claim they support, at the start of some task-oriented answers, or in article carousels. Google also adds desktop previews, contextual explanations, Preferred Sources and new publisher controls. The company has not published a percentage increase in link placement or a click-through lift attributable solely to moving links higher.
What changed in Google’s AI search
Google’s May 6, 2026 announcement describes several ways generative search can connect an answer to the wider web. Users may see a direct link beside relevant text, suggestions for related articles, and a desktop website preview when they hover over an inline link. AI Mode can also point to personal perspectives and other web content.
A June 3, 2026 update for website owners says Google increased the number of inline links directly inside responses and added website previews to encourage clicks. That update also introduced Preferred Sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode, subscription labels, and testing of Search Console controls and insights for generative-AI visibility. Google states that these features had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026.

How the different link formats work

Why links are appearing higher
The stated goal is to make sources easier to discover and make a click more informed. Instead of placing every citation at the end of a long generated answer, Google can attach a source to the exact statement it supports. A preview can reduce the uncertainty of leaving the results page, while a contextual introduction can explain the source’s role before the click.

For searches that require a small number of authoritative resources, Google is testing official-site links at the top of the response. This is different from an ordinary inline citation: the top placement is an answer-level recommendation, while an inline link is tied to a particular passage. Timely-article carousels and related-article suggestions provide another route to publishers whose pages match the user’s question or news need.
What Preferred Sources mean for users and publishers
Preferred Sources are user-selected websites that receive labels and greater visibility in AI responses and carousels. Google’s May 2026 announcement reported more than 345,000 unique sources selected at publication. Google also said people were twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source; that figure describes Google’s reported finding and is not a guarantee for every site or query.

Google says any website publishing fresh content can be eligible for selection. Selection is a user preference, not a general ranking boost. A site may therefore gain visibility when a user has chosen it without becoming more prominent for users who have not.
What website owners can control
Google’s Search Console documentation says publishers can choose whether their sites appear in, or help ground responses in, AI Overviews, AI Mode and related generative features. A site that opts out will not receive traffic or impressions from those features. Google says this control is not used as a ranking signal outside the generative features covered by the setting.

- Open the relevant property in Google Search Console.
- Review the generative-AI visibility controls described in Google’s current Search Console documentation.
- Choose whether the site may appear in or contribute to AI-generated responses.
- Check any available visibility insights to understand impressions and traffic from those features.
Search Console reports all links within an AI Overview under the overview’s single search-result position, according to the contemporaneous coverage. Moving an inline link higher inside the answer does not create a separate reported position for that link.
What the change does—and does not—prove
- It does show: more opportunities for a relevant page to be discovered and clicked from an AI response, clearer source context, and more visible user preference controls.
- It does not show: a published percentage increase in inline-link placement, a ranking improvement caused by link position, or a measured click-through gain attributable only to moving links higher.
- It varies by feature: inline links and previews are described as available product behavior, official-site links and creator-profile links are tests, and carousel placement can vary by location, language, query and rollout stage.
What readers should expect
An AI Overview or AI Mode answer may now contain several source paths instead of one undifferentiated citation area. A claim can have an adjacent link and, on desktop, a preview. A complex task may begin with one or two official resources. A news-related question may show a larger article carousel, while a user’s Preferred Sources can receive labels and extra prominence. These elements are selected dynamically, so two people can see different links for the same broad topic.

The October 15, 2026 report from Search Engine Journal describes the higher placement and testing activity. Google’s May 6 and June 3 announcements provide the product descriptions and rollout statements. Together, they indicate a continuing redesign of how AI search surfaces the web rather than a single new citation position.
