For most Android-phone owners, Google Play is the practical choice. Amazon ended support for the Amazon Appstore on Android mobile devices on August 20, 2025. The Amazon Appstore remains available on Fire tablets and Fire TV, but it is no longer a current, general-purpose alternative store for ordinary Android phones.
The right choice therefore depends first on your device. Use Google Play on a certified Android phone or tablet. On a Fire device, use the Amazon Appstore while checking that each app supports your particular Fire OS version and hardware.
The short answer: choose by device, not by brand loyalty
Google Play and the Amazon Appstore are no longer equivalent options for Android users. Amazon’s February 20, 2025 announcement said Android mobile support would end on August 20, 2025. After that date, apps installed from Amazon Appstore were not guaranteed to continue operating on Android phones.

Fire OS is based on Android, but it is a fork with its own device generations, services and compatibility requirements. That makes the comparison a device-specific decision:

- Android phone or non-Fire Android tablet: Google Play is the supported and practical choice.
- Fire tablet: Amazon Appstore is the native store, but app availability depends on the Fire model, Fire OS release and the app’s technical requirements.
- Fire TV: Amazon Appstore remains the relevant store for television apps.
- Developer distributing to ordinary Android users: Google Play is the primary storefront, although Android also permits distribution through other stores, websites and preloads.
Neither store can be declared universally safer or more complete from the available evidence. Google publishes detailed security controls and compatibility documentation; no equivalent, current independent security comparison with Amazon’s Fire store establishes a winner on risk.
Availability after Amazon’s August 2025 change
What changed on Android phones
Amazon’s change was a support discontinuation, not merely a redesign. Beginning August 20, 2025, the Amazon Appstore stopped being supported for Android mobile devices. Existing installations were not guaranteed to keep working, and future updates or new installations should not be assumed to function on a regular Android phone.
Amazon also ended the Amazon Coins program on the same date. Coins should not be treated as a current purchasing advantage in a Play-versus-Amazon comparison.
What remains available
The same announcement states that Amazon Appstore availability and support continue for Fire tablets and Fire TV. Those devices are the context in which Amazon’s store should now be evaluated.

How Android and Fire OS compatibility works
An app being written for Android does not guarantee that it will run on every Android-derived device. Compatibility is determined by the app’s manifest declarations, required Android API level, processor architecture, screen and hardware features, permissions, operating-system services and the store’s device filters.
Fire OS is an Android fork
Amazon’s Fire OS overview describes Fire OS as a fork of Android and documents multiple Fire OS generations based on different Android levels. A Fire tablet may therefore support some Android applications while lacking services or APIs that an app expects on a Google-certified device.

Common causes of a mismatch include reliance on Google Play services, Google-specific sign-in, location or push-notification components, newer Android APIs than the Fire device provides, or hardware features absent from a particular Fire model. Treat the store listing for your exact device as the authority rather than assuming that an APK or an Android label means universal support.
Google Play also filters by device
Google’s device-compatibility documentation explains that app declarations determine which devices can install an app. Google also distinguishes certified from uncertified devices. On an uncertified device, Google warns of possible security, update, app-functionality and backup limitations.
If an app is missing from Google Play, that does not automatically mean the app is discontinued. It may be excluded because of the device’s screen, chipset, Android version, country, required feature or certification status.
Security: documented protections and their limits
Google Play’s published controls
Google describes several layers in its Protected with Play documentation:
- Play Protect: checks apps during installation and periodically scans devices for potentially harmful applications.
- Play Integrity: lets developers assess whether interactions come from an app and environment meeting specified integrity conditions.
- Play App Signing: manages signing keys for eligible apps and helps protect the update chain.
- Integrity-based availability checks: developers can use integrity requirements to control whether a listing appears on devices meeting their conditions.
Google says Play Protect scans more than 100 billion apps per day. That is Google’s own figure, and the page does not state a publication year; it is not an independent comparative test.

Integrity and listing checks do not make sideloading impossible. Google explicitly notes that these checks do not stop distribution through other channels or installation from outside Google Play. Play Protect also does not guarantee that every app is safe: it is a detection and mitigation system, not a promise of zero malicious or privacy-invasive software.

What the evidence does not establish about Amazon
The current material establishing Amazon Appstore availability does not provide a like-for-like independent security test against Google Play. Avoid ranking Amazon’s store as safer or less safe on that basis. On a Fire device, use the store supplied for that device, keep Fire OS updated, review permissions and install software only from sources you trust.
Catalog and distribution differences
Google Play is the broad storefront for certified Android phones and tablets, but its catalog is still filtered by country, device, Android version and developer settings. Amazon’s store is now focused on Fire hardware, so an app’s absence there may reflect Fire OS support rather than a general Android decision.
Android developers can distribute applications through Google Play, other Android stores, direct website downloads or device preloads. A developer may publish in more than one channel, but each channel can require separate packaging, testing, signing, billing integration and support. An app that exists on Google Play is not automatically available, updated or feature-complete in the Amazon Appstore.

- Open the store on the device you will actually use.
- Search for the app’s exact name and verify the developer identity.
- Read the listing’s supported-device or compatibility information.
- Check the app’s last update date, required operating-system version and key feature notes.
- Confirm that sign-in, payments, notifications and other features do not require services missing from your device.
- Install only after confirming that the listing is intended for your country and hardware.
Payments, billing and regional rules
Google Play billing scope
Google’s payments policy applies to digital goods and services in apps distributed through Google Play, subject to the policy’s categories and exceptions. Physical goods and physical services are treated differently. Developers must follow the rules that apply to their app, transaction type and market.
Do not infer that a price, billing method or external-link rule applies worldwide. Google publishes country- and date-specific programs, and the terms can change.
U.S.-specific changes are not global rules
Google’s U.S. policy update describes programs and changes involving external links, alternative billing and access to third-party-store catalogs during 2025 and 2026. Those details are tied to U.S. rules and stated timelines. A developer or user outside the United States should not treat them as universal; check the policy for the relevant country and the date of the transaction.

Developer economics: what is actually documented
Google’s official service-fee page, Google Play service fee, says that 97% of developers distribute their app and use Google developer tools and services at no cost. It also says that 99% of developers who are subject to a service fee qualify for a fee of 15% or less.
These are Google’s own figures; the page does not state a publication year, and they are not an independent comparison with Amazon. The reviewed material does not establish a current, directly comparable Google-versus-Amazon developer-fee figure. Developers should examine the live terms for their country, app category, revenue level and enrollment status before forecasting net revenue.

Which store is better for each type of user?
Choose Google Play if you use a normal Android phone
Google Play is the clear practical choice because Amazon’s Android-mobile support ended. It provides the supported update path for the phone, integrates with certified-device checks and offers Google’s documented protection mechanisms.
Choose the Amazon Appstore on a Fire tablet
On a Fire tablet, Amazon Appstore is the native, supported storefront. Before relying on an app, confirm the exact Fire model and Fire OS version. A listing may be absent or have reduced functionality if it depends on Google services, a newer API level or hardware your tablet lacks.
Use Amazon Appstore on Fire TV for TV apps
Fire TV remains within Amazon’s supported Appstore scope. TV applications have different navigation, controller, display and media requirements from phone applications, so a phone listing is not evidence of Fire TV support.

Consider multiple channels as a developer
Publishing in Google Play and a Fire-focused channel can expand reach, but it increases testing and operational work. Validate every target device, remove or replace unavailable services, implement the correct billing flow for each store and test update behavior independently.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the hardware: Android phone, non-Fire tablet, Fire tablet or Fire TV.
- Check certification: On Android, verify that the device is Google Play certified; uncertified devices can have security, update, functionality and backup limitations.
- Check the operating-system generation: Record the Android or Fire OS version, not just the device’s marketing name.
- Check service dependencies: Look for Google Play services, Google sign-in, push notifications, maps, payments or other required components.
- Check regional availability: Store listings, billing programs and external-link rules can vary by country.
- Check support status: Confirm that the developer still updates the listing for your device and that the store is supported on that hardware.
- Use the native supported store: Avoid treating an old Amazon Appstore installation on an Android phone as a dependable solution after August 20, 2025.
Troubleshooting common problems
An Android phone cannot find an Amazon Appstore app
This is expected after Amazon’s mobile-support discontinuation. Move to the app’s Google Play listing or the developer’s official distribution channel. Do not assume that an old sideloaded copy will receive updates or continue working.
A Fire tablet cannot find an app that exists on Google Play
Check the Fire model, Fire OS version and the app’s required services. The developer may not have published a Fire-compatible build, or the app may require Google components unavailable on that device. An APK obtained elsewhere may still fail because of missing services, incompatible APIs or licensing and update issues.

Google Play says a device is incompatible
Review the listing’s required Android version, screen or hardware features and country availability. Confirm that the device is Play certified. If the device is uncertified, broader app and update limitations may apply.
An app installs but a feature does not work
Installation proves only that the store’s filters allowed the package. Sign-in, notifications, location, media codecs, payments and other features can depend on services or hardware that differ between certified Android and Fire devices. Check the developer’s device-specific support notes and update the operating system before reporting the problem.
Verdict
For an Android phone in 2026, Google Play is better because it is the supported mainstream store and Amazon no longer supports its Appstore on Android mobile devices. For Fire tablets and Fire TV, Amazon Appstore remains the relevant option, but compatibility is model- and Fire OS-dependent. Compare documented protections, device support and country-specific payment rules rather than relying on old catalog, Coins or security claims.
