Use app archiving when you may need an app again and want its on-device app data kept. Archiving removes the installed software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications while leaving the app icon and data in place. Use Clear cache only for temporary files, and use Clear storage only when you accept permanent deletion of that app’s local data. Uninstall when you no longer want the app installed. For photos, videos, downloads, music, and other files, use Android’s Storage and file-management tools rather than an app-removal command.

The exact menus vary by phone maker and Android edition. Manual archiving described by Google requires Android 15 or later on some devices, and restoration requires the app store to be installed, the app to remain available there, and enough free space to download it again.

Which Android storage action should you choose?

These controls solve different problems. The safest choice depends on whether you are removing an app, resetting it, or deleting files that happen to occupy storage.

Action What is removed What remains and how you undo it Best use
Archive app Installed app software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications The icon and the app’s data remain. Tap the faded icon, use App info, or open the app’s Play Store details page to download it again. The store must be installed and the app must still be available. Free space used by an infrequently used app without discarding its retained on-device data.
Clear cache Temporary files generated by the app The app stays installed and its normal data remains. The next launch can be slower while temporary files are rebuilt. Remove an unusually large cache or troubleshoot temporary-file problems.
Clear storage All app data stored locally by that app This is destructive. You must sign in, configure the app, or restore data again if the app does not synchronize it elsewhere. Reset an app when losing its local data is acceptable.
Uninstall The installed app and its local installation A purchased app can generally be downloaded again without paying a second time, but Google’s cited guidance does not promise that local app data survives uninstalling. Remove an app you do not want installed.
Clean files or media Selected photos, videos, downloads, music, or other files; some actions move items to a bin Recovery depends on the app, backup status, and whether the bin is emptied. Files can also be copied to a computer before local deletion. Reclaim space occupied by personal files rather than by app installation files.

What app archiving actually changes

Google Play’s archive feature is a middle ground between leaving an app installed and uninstalling it. The device removes the app’s executable software, its permissions, temporary files, and its ability to send notifications. Android leaves an app icon in the launcher so you can recognize it, and retains the app data associated with that installation.

The icon appears faded or otherwise marked as archived. Selecting it starts a new download from the app store. You can also open the app’s App info screen and choose the unarchive option, or open the app’s details page in the Play Store and reinstall it there. Reinstallation is a fresh download of the software; it is not an offline resurrection of the removed package.

Manual archive path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then select the app you want to archive.
  3. Choose Archive if the option is shown.

Google’s Android Help notes that some of these steps work only on Android 15 and later and that some archive functions require compatible device hardware. A phone running an older release, or a device without the required support, may not show the control even when the Play Store is current.

Conditions for restoring an archived app

  • The app store used for the installation must still be installed on the phone.
  • The developer must still make that app available in the store for your device and region.
  • The phone needs sufficient free space for the software download and installation.
  • Any account, server-side, or synchronization behavior is controlled by the app. Retaining Android’s app data does not establish that every account state or cloud record is preserved.

If an archived app cannot be restored, check the store connection, available storage, device compatibility, and whether the listing is still published. An icon that remains on the launcher is not a guarantee that the package can be downloaded indefinitely.

Automatic archiving in Google Play

Google Play can remove software from apps you rarely use while retaining personal data and leaving the icon visible. On supported devices, enable or disable the feature through Play Store > profile photo > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps.

When installation space is running low, Android may offer automatic archiving. The feature targets apps that are not used often; it does not let you select an arbitrary number of gigabytes to reclaim, and it does not provide a published storage-savings figure for each app.

Keep one app from being automatically archived

When automatic archiving is enabled, open Settings > Apps > [the chosen app] and turn off Manage app if unused. That prevents automatic archiving for that app. Manual archiving remains available, so this setting is not a permanent lock against removing the software yourself.

Clearing cache versus clearing app storage

Clear cache: temporary cleanup

Android describes Clear cache as deleting temporary data. Cached images, previews, downloaded fragments, and other working files may be recreated the next time the app runs. Because the app’s account configuration and primary data are not the target of this control, clearing cache is the lower-risk choice when you are troubleshooting a bloated temporary area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some apps can be slower immediately after the operation because they must rebuild those files. A cache clear is therefore not a promise of a permanent storage reduction: the cache may grow again as you use the app.

Clear storage: a destructive reset

Clear storage permanently deletes all app data stored locally, according to Android Help. Depending on the app, that can include downloaded content, sign-in state, preferences, drafts, databases, and files that have not synchronized elsewhere. Google advises trying to delete data from inside the app first when that option exists.

Use this control only after checking what the app can recover. If you cannot identify where the app stores its data or whether it synchronizes it, treat clearing storage as irreversible. Reinstalling or reopening the app will not automatically recreate unsynchronized local content.

What uninstalling does—and what it does not promise

Uninstall removes the app from the device rather than placing it in an archived state. The icon normally disappears, and the app’s local installation is removed. If you bought the app, Google’s guidance says you can download it again without buying it again when you use the same account, but the cited help does not promise retention of local app data after uninstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose uninstall when the app is no longer wanted, when you have exported or synchronized anything important, or when you deliberately prefer a clean removal. Choose archive instead when the icon and retained app data are useful and you expect to return to the app.

Android’s built-in tools for photos, downloads, and other files

App controls cannot remove personal files that are stored outside an app’s installation. Android separates storage, where files such as photos and music are kept, from memory, which is used while programs and Android are running. Freeing storage does not increase the phone’s physical memory, and closing apps is not a substitute for deleting files.

Inspect categories before deleting anything

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Select a category to see which files or apps account for the space.

Category names and their order vary by manufacturer. Use the category view to decide whether the problem is installed apps, photos and videos, downloaded files, music, or another file group before choosing a cleanup action.

Use Free up space for selected items

Google’s storage guidance describes a Free up space workflow that can show recent photos, videos, or apps for review. Select only items you have verified you no longer need, then confirm deletion. This is a file-level cleanup, not an app-archiving command, so it can reclaim media space without changing an app’s installation state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove downloaded media in its source app

Offline music, films, podcasts, maps, and similar downloads are often managed by the app that created them. Open that app and remove downloads from its own library or offline-settings screen. Deleting the app may remove those files, but using the source app gives you a clearer record of what is being removed and what can be downloaded again.

Review the Downloads folder

Open the phone’s Files or file-management app, choose Downloads, sort or review the contents, and delete files you recognize as unnecessary. Be careful with documents, installation packages, exported photos, and work files: a filename alone may not reveal whether another app still needs it.

Copy files to a computer before deleting local copies

  1. Connect the phone to a computer with a compatible USB cable.
  2. Unlock the phone and choose the file-transfer option if Android presents a USB notification.
  3. Copy the selected folders to the computer.
  4. Open several copied files on the computer to verify that the transfer succeeded.
  5. Delete the confirmed local copies from the phone and empty any applicable bin.

The official guidance does not require a particular cable, drive, adapter, or external-storage product. The important safeguard is verification before deletion.

Smart Storage for backed-up photos and videos

Android’s Smart Storage setting can automatically clear backed-up photos and videos when device storage is nearly full. Enable it from the Storage settings when the option is available. Confirm that the files are actually backed up before relying on automatic removal of local copies; a file that merely appears in a gallery is not proof that a complete backup exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart Storage targets backed-up media, not installed app software. It therefore complements app archiving rather than replacing it.

Unused-app optimization is related, but not the same as archiving

Android may optimize apps that have not been used for a long time. The documented effects can include deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, stopping background activity, and stopping notifications. Review candidates under Settings > Apps > Unused apps.

For an app that should continue operating normally, open its settings and turn off Pause app activity if unused. This optimization is not equivalent to Play’s archive operation: the controls, triggers, and documented effects differ. An app can be subject to unused-app optimization without being archived, and an archived app has its installed software removed until it is downloaded again.

Step-by-step decisions for common space problems

You want to keep an app’s local state but rarely open it

  1. Check that the phone supports archiving and that the app’s listing remains available in the store.
  2. Use Settings > Apps > app name > Archive.
  3. When you need the app, tap its faded icon or use the Play Store details page to restore it.

Before archiving, note that notifications and permissions stop while the software is absent. Time-sensitive background work will not run until restoration.

An app is using a large temporary area

  1. Open Settings > Apps > app name > Storage or the equivalent storage screen on your phone.
  2. Review the displayed cache size.
  3. Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage, when you want temporary cleanup without resetting the app.
  4. Reopen the app and allow time for normal temporary files to rebuild.

The app is broken and you are willing to reset it

  1. Export drafts or other content from inside the app if it offers that function.
  2. Confirm that important information is synchronized or otherwise recoverable.
  3. Open the app’s storage settings and choose Clear storage.
  4. Launch the app, sign in, and restore or reconfigure it as required.

Photos or downloads, rather than apps, fill the phone

  1. Open Settings > Storage and identify the largest category.
  2. Use Free up space, the source app’s download manager, or the Files app to review items.
  3. Copy irreplaceable files to a computer and verify the copies.
  4. Delete only confirmed duplicates, obsolete downloads, or backed-up local media.
  5. Empty the relevant bin if the space is still reported as occupied.

Limits, failure modes, and recovery

The Archive button is missing

The phone may be below Android 15, lack supporting hardware, use a manufacturer interface that places the control elsewhere, or have an app that cannot be archived in that configuration. Check for system updates and consult the phone maker’s documentation. Do not substitute Clear storage simply because Archive is unavailable; that command has a different and destructive result.

Restoration does not start

Verify that the Play Store is installed and signed in, the app’s listing is still published for your device and region, and enough storage is free for the download. A retained icon and data do not override store availability or compatibility requirements.

Space did not increase as expected

No official page cited here supplies a universal number of megabytes saved by archiving, cache clearing, uninstalling, or media cleanup. Results depend on the app version, cached content, downloaded files, and the device’s accounting. Recheck Settings > Storage after the operation and inspect other categories if the largest space consumer was not the item you changed.

A deleted file is still visible

Look for a bin or trash area in the app that deleted it and empty that bin only after confirming recovery is unnecessary. Cloud-backed galleries can also continue to display online items after the local copy is removed; distinguish an online view from a file stored on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone’s menus do not match these paths

Google explicitly notes that settings can vary by phone. Search Settings for Storage, Archive, Unused apps, or Smart Storage, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact labels. The underlying distinction remains the same: archive removes software while retaining the icon and app data; cache is temporary; storage reset is permanent; and file cleanup targets personal files.

A practical rule for choosing safely

  • Need the app later and want its retained data: archive, if the device supports it.
  • Need to remove temporary clutter: clear cache.
  • Need a complete app reset: clear storage only after exporting or synchronizing anything important.
  • Never want the app installed: uninstall after checking local-data needs.
  • Photos, videos, music, or downloads are the problem: use Storage, Free up space, the source app’s download controls, Files, USB transfer, or Smart Storage.
