The Pixel Watch 5 is a polished but incremental update to the Pixel Watch 4. Its most notable changes are expanded gestures, a refreshed Gemini experience and tracking refinements—not a major redesign. An Engadget review published August 21, 2026, found it a solid upgrade, while noting that some announced health and workout features were not available during the review. That was launch-period context; it does not establish whether those features are available now.
What is new compared with Pixel Watch 4?
The watch looks much like its predecessor. Engadget’s review describes the Pixel Watch 5 as a small physical update, with a move from Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 to Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated; both watches have an IP68 rating. The review also lists a 320 ppi AMOLED display with peak brightness up to 3,000 nits. Those are reported specifications, not independent measurements. In the review, visibility suffered when the watch dimmed in battery-saving mode.
The more noticeable differences are in how the watch is used. The review highlights redesigned complications, pop-ups in At a Glance, expanded one-handed gestures, a refreshed Gemini presentation and customizable tiles for frequently used functions. A watch-face generator is included, though the reviewer found that it mainly changed clock-font styling while other layout choices remained rigid.

GPS tracking
Google said the Pixel Watch 5’s GPS approach is two times more accurate than older Pixel Watch models. As described in the review, it uses worldwide reference-station data and 3D building models to help mitigate satellite interference. The reviewer had not completed dense-city comparison testing, so the two-times figure remains Google’s claim rather than an independently established result. One observed bike-ride comparison also varied with recording choices: Apple Watch captured more comprehensive data when location tracking was enabled, while manually started Pixel Watch 5 recording captured route and elevation details on the return ride. That single-person comparison is not a general performance test.

Sleep tracking
Google claims a 15 percent improvement in sleep-stage accuracy. Engadget’s reviewer reported one night’s reading of 8 hours and 37 minutes but could not judge the claimed improvement over the short review period. Best Buy’s product copy says the comparison is based on clinical validation against gold-standard measurements, comparing the latest algorithm with the previous generation across compatible Pixel and Fitbit devices; the listing does not provide the validation study itself.
Which sizes and connectivity options are listed?
Best Buy lists 41mm and 45mm models, each in Wi-Fi and LTE versions. Its listings reproduce manufacturer battery estimates of up to 30 hours for the 41mm and up to 40 hours for the 45mm. These are maximum stated figures, not a promise of real-world runtime; usage can reduce battery life.

Prices and stock change, so check current listings before buying. The review also reported discoloration on its review-unit band and noted that Google sells additional or replacement bands. It cited prices of $50 to $200 at publication; those dated figures may no longer apply, and band compatibility should be checked for the exact watch size. The review did not verify third-party bands or screen protectors.

Best Buy’s listing says most Android phones running Android 12.0 or later are supported. Gemini requires a compatible Android phone, and some features depend on country, language, age or subscription. Check current compatibility and feature terms for your location before purchasing.

Setup took extra steps for Engadget’s reviewer, including updating phone software and the Pixel Watch and Google Health apps, restarting, and installing multiple watch-app updates. The reviewer also had to enable settings such as Gemini, Gestures and Proactive Intelligence to use some features. This describes one review experience, not a guaranteed setup sequence for every buyer.

During the August 2026 review, Workout Builder and blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trend reports were not yet available; the review expected them in September. That expectation is not confirmation of a release, and the launch gap is not proof that the features remain unavailable. Check Google’s current feature information for rollout status, region and any subscription requirements before relying on them.

The review also noted that Google Health Premium gates some health features, while the metrics repository can be used without AI Coach and other paid tools. Which tools are included may depend on current terms and location, so confirm the specifics rather than assuming a feature is free or available in your country.
Is Pixel Watch 5 worth upgrading to?
For Pixel Watch 4 owners, the case to upgrade rests on whether the expanded gestures, Gemini changes and tracking refinements matter to you; the review does not describe a sweeping hardware redesign. For first-time buyers, compare the two sizes and connectivity options against your fit, phone compatibility and expected use. If workout tracking is the deciding factor, consider the GPS claim unproven by the review’s limited comparison and verify that any must-have features have rolled out where you live.
When weighing Pixel Watch 5 against alternatives such as Pixel Watch 4 or Samsung Galaxy Watch9, compare the same practical details: fit, Wi-Fi versus LTE and carrier needs, real-world battery life, Android compatibility, workout and GPS requirements, feature availability and current price. The cited sources do not establish controlled comparative testing across these watches.
