Pixel Watch 4 is the better first choice for most people who want Google’s watch and Fitbit health ecosystem, while Galaxy Watch8 is the more natural fit for Samsung Galaxy-phone owners who want Samsung Health Monitor features. Check phone compatibility before comparing anything else: Pixel Watch 4 requires Android 11 or newer, whereas Galaxy Watch8 requires Android 12 or newer and at least 1.5 GB of RAM. Neither current watch supports iPhone.

The practical decision then comes down to case size, charging expectations, health-feature availability in your country, app preference, and whether you need LTE away from your phone. Manufacturer battery claims and brightness figures are not controlled head-to-head test results, so they should not be used to declare an overall performance winner.

Check your phone before choosing a watch

Pixel Watch 4 compatibility

Google says Pixel Watch 4 works with most phones running Android 11.0 or newer. Pairing also requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. “Most” matters: Google’s compatibility page is the authority for exceptions, so check your exact handset rather than assuming that any Android 11 device will work. The current Pixel Watch line does not support iPhone. Check Google’s compatibility list before ordering.

Galaxy Watch8 compatibility

Samsung lists Android 12 or newer and at least 1.5 GB of RAM for Galaxy Watch8. Samsung’s table covers both Samsung and non-Samsung Android phones, but warns that certain phone models and tablets are unsupported. iOS is marked “Not supported.” The basic pairing requirement is separate from access to Samsung Health Monitor functions, which can impose a stricter Samsung-phone requirement.

A quick compatibility check

  1. Open the phone manufacturer’s settings and record the Android version and RAM specification.
  2. Compare the result with Google’s Pixel Watch compatibility page and Samsung’s Watch compatibility table.
  3. If you want ECG, blood-pressure or sleep-apnea monitoring, check the separate health-service requirements for your country and phone model.
  4. For an LTE model, confirm that your carrier supports the watch’s cellular activation before paying the LTE premium.

If your phone is Android 11 but not Android 12, Pixel Watch 4 is the only one of these two that meets the stated minimum. If your phone is a recent Samsung Galaxy, both may pair, but Samsung-specific health functions can make Galaxy Watch8 the more useful choice.

Sizes, fit and display hardware

Choose the closest case size, not the brand

Pixel Watch 4 comes in 41 mm and 45 mm cases. Galaxy Watch8’s standard models are 40 mm and 44 mm. The nearest size comparisons are therefore 41 mm versus 40 mm and 45 mm versus 44 mm. Case diameter alone does not establish comfort: wrist circumference, case thickness, strap material, button placement and your tolerance for wearing a watch overnight all matter.

Approximate size class Pixel Watch 4 Galaxy Watch8 Who may prefer it
Smaller 41 mm 40 mm Smaller wrists, lighter visual presence and easier sleep wear
Larger 45 mm 44 mm Readers who prefer a larger viewing area or longer stated Pixel battery estimate

Google lists both Pixel sizes with a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Samsung describes the same 3,000-nit peak figure for Watch8 in its global launch material. Those are separate vendor claims measured under each company’s conditions; they do not prove equal outdoor readability.

Software and core specifications

Pixel Watch 4 uses Wear OS 6.0. Google’s US specification page lists Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB, dual-frequency GPS and optional LTE. Both sizes have 32 GB of storage and 2 GB of SDRAM, plus 5 ATM and IP68 ratings. Samsung identifies Wear OS 6 for Galaxy Watch8. The cited Watch8 materials do not establish an equivalent storage or memory figure, so do not infer parity from the operating-system version alone.

Water-resistance ratings are not permission to ignore care instructions. Salt water, soaps, impacts and aging seals can affect protection, and neither rating turns a smartwatch into a dive computer. Treat the ratings as a specification for ordinary use, not a guarantee against every liquid or accident.

Battery life and charging: how to read the claims

Pixel Watch 4’s stated estimates

Pixel Watch 4 size Battery capacity Google’s estimated always-on-display runtime Google’s Battery Saver estimate
41 mm 325 mAh Up to 30 hours Up to 48 hours
45 mm 455 mAh Up to 40 hours Up to 72 hours

These figures come from Google’s current US specification page and are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements. “Up to” describes a test ceiling, not a promise that every user will reach it. Always-on display, LTE, GPS, screen brightness, workout tracking, notifications, temperature and software can all change the result.

Galaxy Watch8 figures require their test conditions

Samsung publishes Watch8 battery capacities and runtime estimates with its own variant and test-method qualifications. Its launch release says testing used prerelease devices, a Samsung phone and specified charging equipment. The available official material does not provide a matched independent test against both Pixel sizes, so it is not valid to announce a direct runtime winner from the headline numbers.

Plan charging around your routine

  • For sleep tracking, choose a charging window during a shower, desk break or breakfast rather than assuming a multi-day reserve.
  • LTE use and frequent GPS workouts generally create a heavier battery load than Bluetooth use near the phone.
  • Compare the same case size and display setting when evaluating claims; the 41 mm Pixel and 45 mm Pixel have materially different stated runtimes.
  • Keep the supplied or approved charger available. Wireless charging accessories are not automatically interchangeable between brands.

Someone who values the largest stated Pixel reserve should investigate the 45 mm Pixel Watch 4, while someone who prefers a smaller case should expect the 41 mm and 40 mm models to have less physical battery headroom. That is a size trade-off, not proof that one company’s software is inherently more efficient.

Health tracking and medical-feature restrictions

Pixel Watch 4: Google Health and Fitbit

Pixel Watch 4 is built around Google Health and Fitbit activity, sleep and heart-rate experiences. Google’s ECG app can provide an assessment that helps identify signs consistent with atrial fibrillation, but Google says it is not a diagnosis and is not intended for users under 22. ECG availability is limited to selected countries; the current country list is maintained by Google at its ECG availability page.

Rank #3
Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi | Gemini Intelligence, domed display, comprehensive health and fitness tracking
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Google also states that some Google Health features require a paid Google Health Premium subscription. Availability can differ by country and by feature, so confirm the exact function you want rather than assuming every Pixel Watch health metric is included everywhere. Google’s activity and sleep support information is at this support page, and ECG use guidance is at Google’s ECG help page.

Galaxy Watch8: Samsung Health Monitor

Samsung Health Monitor can support ECG recording, blood-pressure checks and sleep-apnea monitoring where the service has been released. Samsung’s US support documentation says Health Monitor features require a compatible Galaxy Watch paired with a supported Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later. Sleep-apnea monitoring requires Galaxy Watch4 or newer, but that does not remove the phone and regional restrictions.

Do not treat “the watch has the sensor” as equivalent to “the feature will work for you.” Samsung can limit functions by country, phone model, regulatory approval and app version. Check Samsung’s Health Monitor requirements for your location before buying specifically for ECG or blood pressure.

Use health functions responsibly

Both companies present these capabilities as wellness or health-monitoring tools, not substitutes for diagnosis or treatment. An alert, an inconclusive reading or a missing feature should be handled according to local medical guidance. The buying question is whether the supported function is available on your phone and in your country, not whether a specification sheet lists a particular sensor.

Apps, connectivity and LTE choices

Google’s connected feature set

Google lists Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB and dual-frequency GPS for Pixel Watch 4, with Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants. NFC supports compatible contactless functions, while UWB availability and use depend on compatible devices and software. Dual-frequency GPS is a specification advantage on paper, but the supplied product information does not establish comparative real-world track accuracy against Watch8.

Samsung’s watch and phone integration

Galaxy Watch8 is offered in Bluetooth and LTE versions and is designed to work with Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health ecosystem. A non-Samsung Android phone can meet the basic compatibility requirement, but Samsung Health Monitor’s supported-phone rule remains decisive for its specialized features.

When LTE is worth considering

  • Choose LTE if you regularly leave your phone behind for calls, messages, navigation or emergency connectivity.
  • Choose Bluetooth/Wi-Fi if your phone is normally nearby and you want to avoid a carrier activation or recurring watch-line charge.
  • Ask the carrier whether the watch and phone must share an account, whether number sharing is supported, and whether the exact regional model is eligible.

LTE does not make either watch independent of a phone for initial setup, updates or every app. It mainly reduces how often the phone must be within Bluetooth range.

Which watch fits your situation?

Choose Pixel Watch 4 first if you use a non-Samsung Android phone

Pixel Watch 4 is the safer starting point when your handset meets Android 11 but not Samsung’s Android 12 minimum, or when you specifically want Google’s account, Pixel Watch and Fitbit experience. It also gives you a clear choice between 41 mm and 45 mm cases and publishes detailed storage, memory and connectivity specifications.

Choose Pixel Watch 4 if Google’s health ecosystem is your priority

Readers already using Fitbit or Google Health services may find the Pixel workflow more coherent. Confirm whether ECG is approved in your country and whether the particular Google Health feature you want is behind the Premium subscription. If either condition fails, the watch may still track ordinary activity and sleep, but it will not deliver the feature you expected.

Choose Galaxy Watch8 first if you own a Samsung Galaxy phone

Galaxy Watch8 is the logical first investigation for Samsung-phone owners who want Samsung Health Monitor functions. The integration is strongest when the phone, watch, app and country all satisfy Samsung’s requirements. Confirm your exact Galaxy model rather than assuming that every Samsung phone unlocks every function.

Compare both if your phone supports both platforms

With a compatible Android 12-or-newer phone, the final choice is likely to be size, charging routine, health-app preference, LTE pricing and local availability. Compare the 40/44 mm Samsung options with the closest 41/45 mm Pixel options. Avoid making a decision solely from a 3,000-nit claim or a maximum battery figure.

Do not choose either if you need iPhone support

Google’s current Pixel Watch compatibility information and Samsung’s Watch8 compatibility table both identify iPhone as unsupported. An iPhone owner should not purchase either model expecting normal pairing, notifications or health-app access.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Identify the exact model. Record case size, Bluetooth or LTE connectivity, color and regional model number. A 40 mm Bluetooth Watch8 and a 44 mm LTE Watch8 are different purchasing decisions.
  2. Validate the phone. Confirm Android version, RAM and model eligibility on the official support pages linked above.
  3. Validate the health feature. Look up ECG, blood pressure, sleep apnea or Premium requirements for your country before treating that feature as a reason to buy.
  4. Check the carrier for LTE. Confirm activation, number-sharing rules, fees and regional compatibility.
  5. Measure your wrist and consider sleep wear. Compare the smaller and larger case classes in person if possible; specifications cannot determine comfort.
  6. Check current price and stock locally. Retail pricing and availability change by market, storage/connectivity configuration and promotion. Do not rely on an old launch price.
  7. Keep the correct charger and bands. Do not assume a Pixel band or charger fits Galaxy Watch8, or vice versa; connector and size standards are model-specific.
  8. Pair through the manufacturer’s current app. Install the required watch app, sign in to the account requested during setup, allow updates, and then test notifications, GPS, health permissions and LTE activation before discarding packaging.

What the specifications cannot settle

The official documentation establishes compatibility, listed features and manufacturer battery estimates. It does not establish long-term reliability, comparative comfort, notification latency, independent GPS accuracy, independent heart-rate accuracy, charging speed under identical conditions or a real-world battery winner. Those questions require matched hands-on testing, and the available product pages should not be stretched into claims they do not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a higher storage number, a brighter peak specification or a longer “up to” estimate does not automatically make one watch faster or more useful. Your phone, region, software permissions, carrier and daily settings can matter more than a single line in a specification table.

Final decision framework

  • Pixel Watch 4: investigate first for Android 11-and-newer users who want Google/Fitbit integration, Pixel-style software and a choice of 41 mm or 45 mm cases.
  • Galaxy Watch8: investigate first for Samsung Galaxy owners who want Samsung Health Monitor features and are willing to meet Samsung’s phone and regional rules.
  • Either: compare both when your phone supports them and your priorities are size, charging, LTE, apps or current local price.
  • Neither: choose another category if iPhone compatibility is essential.
