On a Pixel phone, a screen saver and Always-on Display (AOD) are different features for different moments. The screen saver is a configurable full-screen experience that appears when the phone is charging or docked; it can show a clock, photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or compatible apps. AOD is a lock-screen view that keeps the time and selected information visible while the display is otherwise off. Configure them separately under Settings > Display & touch.

The short answer: screen saver versus AOD

Choose a screen saver when you want your charging Pixel to become a useful bedside, desk, or stand display. It is a content view that starts in a charging or docked situation and can present more than a clock. Choose Always-on Display when you want glanceable lock-screen information while the phone is not actively lit.

These features can coexist, but one does not replace the other. A screen saver does not mean that AOD is enabled, and enabling AOD does not select a charging screen-saver layout. Their triggers, content, and controls are separate.

Question Screen saver Always-on Display
When does it appear? When the phone is charging or, on supported settings, upright and charging after the display times out. When the phone is otherwise locked or the display is off, subject to the phone’s display behavior and settings.
What does it show? A selected experience such as Clock, Photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or a compatible app. The time and other lock-screen information in a low-power, screen-off state.
How is it customized? Choose content, charging conditions, preview, and low-light behavior. Use the Always-on Display control and related lock-screen options available on that Pixel and Android version.
Is charging required? Yes. Google describes the feature in terms of charging or docking conditions. No charging requirement is described for the basic AOD function.
Can it show a wallpaper? Photos and other selected content can be used where offered by the screen-saver choices. Showing the lock-screen wallpaper on AOD is currently documented only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

What a Pixel screen saver does

A Pixel screen saver is a display experience that takes over after the phone is connected to power or placed in a supported charging setup. Instead of leaving the phone on a normal lock screen, it can turn the device into a larger information panel. Google’s current screen-saver choices include Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, and compatible apps. The exact list can vary with the phone, installed apps, and Android version.

Google Pixelsnap Charger with Stand - Fast-Charging Qi2 Wireless Charger
  • Qi2 Wireless Charger with Stand
  • Use the Pixelsnap Charger with Stand to dock your phone upright so it stays useful on its way to full; or detach the charger from the stand to take it on the go[1]
  • Do more on your Pixel while you power up; while your phone is docked and charging, you can access your favorite screensavers, display your favorite photos, check the weather, or control your smart home devices
  • Getting to a full charge is easier than ever; just rest your phone on the stand and the magnetic technology will snap it right into place – reaching speeds up to 25W to charge your Pixel[1]
  • Please refer to the product description section below for all applicable legal disclaimers denoted by the bracketed numbers in the preceding bullet points (e.g., [1], [2], etc.)

Clock

The Clock option is the most direct bedside or desk use. It presents time while the phone is charging, with the screen-saver behavior rather than the small, persistent indicators used by AOD. The available clock presentation and controls depend on the software version on the Pixel.

Photos

Photos turns a charging phone into a rotating picture display. It is a different use case from AOD: the screen saver is allowed to show selected visual content while charging, whereas AOD is designed to keep lock-screen information visible with the rest of the display off. Which photo sources and selection controls appear depend on the Photos configuration offered on your device.

Home Controls

Home Controls can put compatible smart-home controls on the charging display. This is useful when the Pixel is on a desk or stand and you want to reach supported controls without opening the full phone interface. The option is shown only when the relevant software and compatible devices are available.

Pixel Weather and compatible apps

Pixel Weather can provide a weather-oriented charging view. Google also lists compatible apps as a screen-saver category, so the choices on one Pixel may not match those on another. An app must support the screen-saver surface; installing any arbitrary app does not guarantee that it will appear in the picker.

How to set up and preview a Pixel screen saver

Google’s current setup path is under the display settings. Labels can differ slightly between Android releases, but the sequence is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & touch.
  3. Tap Screen saver.
  4. Turn on Use screen saver.
  5. Choose the content you want, such as Clock, Photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or an available compatible app.
  6. Set when it should appear. Google’s current wording includes While charging and, on supported configurations, While upright and charging.
  7. Use the screen-saver preview control to check the result without waiting for the normal timeout.

The preview is particularly useful for checking a photo selection, clock style, or app view before leaving the phone on a stand. It does not change the charging requirement for normal automatic startup.

Let the display time out

To let the screen saver start automatically, allow the display to time out. Pressing the Power button to turn the screen off prevents the screen saver from starting, according to Google’s instructions. If you are testing the feature, connect the phone to power, place it in the intended position if you selected an upright condition, and wait for the regular display timeout rather than pressing Power.

If red light blinks means that the phone is not right positioned or not compatible.

Understand the charging condition

A screen saver is tied to a charging context. A phone that is merely sitting on a desk, unplugged, will not normally enter the charging screen saver. If you selected While upright and charging, the phone must satisfy both parts of that condition. A cable, charging stand, or another supported power setup can meet the charging requirement; the exact behavior depends on the option shown on your Pixel.

Use low-light settings

The screen-saver settings include low-light behavior. Google says the default in a dim environment is to transition to a low-light clock. Depending on the controls presented by your software, you can instead choose behavior that turns the screen off. These controls affect what happens after the room becomes dark; they do not turn the feature into AOD.

What Always-on Display does

Always-on Display is a lock-screen behavior. It keeps the time and some other information visible even when the main display is off, giving you a quick glance without waking the full screen. The information is associated with the lock screen, not with a charging-only screen-saver layout.

On a Pixel, Google’s general display guidance places the AOD control in Settings > Display & touch. Open that area and use the Always-on Display control to turn the feature off or on. The precise wording and neighboring options can change with Android version and device model, so a Pixel running a different release may show a slightly different arrangement.

AOD does not require a charging stand

The basic AOD function is intended to operate when the screen is otherwise off, not only when the phone is charging. You do not need a Pixel Stand or another dock to use it. Charging accessories are relevant to the screen-saver scenario, while AOD is part of the phone’s display and lock-screen behavior.

AOD is not a full-screen photo frame

AOD should not be treated as a second name for the screen saver. Its purpose is glanceable lock-screen information. It does not automatically provide the screen-saver categories of Photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or compatible apps. Those are screen-saver choices and are configured in the separate Screen saver menu.

  3. Tap Always-on display.
  4. Turn on Show lock screen wallpaper, if the option is present.

Do not generalize this wallpaper option to every Pixel or every Pro model. If the control is missing, that can simply mean the phone or Android build does not support the documented feature. It also does not imply that AOD itself is unavailable; the wallpaper control and the basic AOD control are separate.

How the two features behave in common situations

Situation Likely result Why
Phone is unplugged and the screen times out AOD may show lock-screen information if enabled; the charging screen saver does not start. The screen saver is tied to charging or docking, while AOD is a screen-off display behavior.
Phone is charging on a desk and the display times out The selected screen saver can appear if its condition is set to While charging. The charging trigger has been met.
Phone is charging but the Power button was pressed The screen saver may not start. Google says pressing Power to turn the phone off prevents the screen saver from starting; let the display time out instead.
Phone is on a stand but not receiving power The charging screen saver does not normally start. Being upright alone is not the same as being upright and charging.
Room becomes dim while the screen saver is running The display can transition to a low-light clock or turn off, depending on the selected low-light setting. Low-light behavior is configurable within screen-saver settings.
Pixel 10 Pro or 10 Pro XL with wallpaper option enabled AOD can show the lock-screen wallpaper as documented by Google. This is a model-specific AOD feature.

Which feature should you use?

Use a screen saver when the phone has a place to live

Select the screen saver if your Pixel spends time charging beside your bed, on a work desk, or on a compatible stand. It is the better fit when you want a clock that occupies the charging display, a rotating photo view, weather, Home Controls, or a supported app. The feature is especially useful when you want the phone to be informative from a short distance while it is connected to power.

Use AOD for quick checks away from the charger

Choose AOD when the priority is seeing the time and lock-screen information without waking the complete display. It is suited to a phone in a pocket, on a table, or anywhere that is not being used as a charging display. AOD has fewer content choices because it is designed around the lock screen rather than a full-screen experience.

Use both for different contexts

There is no need to treat the choice as exclusive. AOD can handle ordinary screen-off glances, while the screen saver takes over the charging or docked context. Configure each one independently and test the transition with the phone connected to the charging setup you actually use.

Charging accessories and what they change

Google’s screen-saver instructions mention Pixel Stand generations and Pixelsnap Chargers as charging setups that can be used with the feature. An accessory can make the charging display easier to see or keep the phone positioned upright, but it is not required to understand or enable AOD. Confirm compatibility for your exact Pixel model and the accessory generation before buying; availability and supported behavior can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A charger does not automatically add screen-saver content. You still need to turn on Use screen saver, select the content, and choose the charging condition. Likewise, owning a stand does not enable lock-screen wallpaper on AOD on models that do not document that option.

Troubleshooting: when the screen saver or AOD is missing

The screen saver never appears

  • Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and confirm that Use screen saver is on.
  • Check the selected condition. While charging requires active charging; While upright and charging requires both power and the supported upright position.
  • Let the display time out. Do not press the Power button to force the screen off, because Google says that prevents the screen saver from starting.
  • Use the preview control to distinguish a configuration problem from a charging-trigger problem.
  • If you selected an app, verify that it is listed as a compatible screen-saver app. Not every installed app can provide screen-saver content.

The screen saver turns into a dim clock or goes dark

  • Review the low-light setting in the Screen saver menu.
  • Remember that Google’s default dim-environment behavior is a transition to a low-light clock.
  • If you selected an option that turns the screen off in low light, the screen saver may be working as configured rather than failing.

AOD is not visible

  • Open Settings > Display & touch and check the Always-on Display control.
  • Do not look for AOD choices in the Screen saver menu; the features have separate controls.
  • Check the Android version and Pixel model, because labels and available display controls can differ.
  • If you are expecting wallpaper, verify that the phone is a Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL and look for Show lock screen wallpaper under Always-on display.

The wallpaper control is absent

Google’s current documentation limits lock-screen wallpaper on AOD to Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. On another model, an absent control is expected. On a qualifying model, software version and regional or device-specific availability can still affect which labels are shown, so check the full Always-on display page rather than assuming the option is hidden in Screen saver.

Important limits and expectations

Do not assume identical behavior across Pixel generations

Google’s menus and labels can change with Android updates and device models. The documented paths provide a reliable starting point, but a Pixel may present a slightly different label or an additional condition. Treat the controls visible on your phone as authoritative for that software build.

No universal battery figure

The available Google guidance describes what the features do and how to configure them; it does not establish one battery-use number that applies to every Pixel, brightness level, charging setup, or Android version. Avoid treating a screen-saver or AOD battery claim from one model as a universal result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photos and wallpaper are not interchangeable terms

Photos are a screen-saver content category. Lock-screen wallpaper on AOD is a separate, model-specific option documented for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. A phone offering Photos in its screen saver does not thereby support wallpaper on AOD.

A practical setup checklist

  • Decide whether you need a charging display, an always-visible lock screen, or both.
  • For a charging display, open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver.
  • Turn on Use screen saver and select the content that fits your use.
  • Choose While charging or the supported upright-and-charging condition.
  • Preview the screen saver, then test it by allowing the display to time out while the phone is charging.
  • Set low-light behavior so the phone transitions to a dim clock or turns off as you prefer.
  • For glanceable lock-screen information, open Settings > Display & touch and configure Always-on Display.
  • If you own a Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL and want wallpaper on AOD, look under Always-on display > Show lock screen wallpaper.

Bottom line

A Pixel screen saver is a configurable charging or docked display; AOD is the lock-screen information view used while the screen is otherwise off. Use the screen saver for clocks, photos, Home Controls, weather, and compatible charging-display apps. Use AOD for quick time and notification-related glances. Configure them independently, and treat lock-screen wallpaper on AOD as a feature currently documented only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Pixel screen saver without enabling Always-on Display?

Yes. The screen saver and AOD have separate controls. Enable the screen saver under Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver; AOD is configured separately under Display & touch.

Why does pressing the Power button stop my screen saver from appearing?

Google’s screen-saver instructions say the feature will not start when you press Power to turn the phone off. Leave the phone charging and let the display time out instead.

Does every Pixel support lock-screen wallpaper on AOD?

No. Google currently documents Show lock screen wallpaper on AOD only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

Do I need a Pixel Stand to use a screen saver?

No. A stand can provide a convenient charging position, and Google mentions Pixel Stand generations and Pixelsnap Chargers in its setup guidance, but the screen saver is configured through the phone and does not make AOD dependent on an accessory.
