Pixel notification summaries and Android notification channels control different parts of a notification. Summaries use on-device AI features to condense unread messages and long conversations into shorter text. Channels are categories defined by each app that let you control how a type of notification alerts and appears. A supported Pixel can use both at the same time: a summary changes the wording you read, while the channel controls sound, vibration, importance and other presentation behavior.

If your problem is that message alerts are too long, look at Notification summaries. If you want to silence, prioritize or otherwise change one kind of alert from an app, look at that app’s notification channel, which Android settings may label a category.

The difference at a glance

Question Pixel notification summaries Android notification channels
What problem does it solve? Long or numerous message notifications are condensed into a shorter summary. Different notification types from one app are organized and given separate alert behavior.
What does it change? The content shown for eligible unread messages and long conversations. The importance, sound, vibration and visual behavior of a notification category.
Who defines the structure? Google provides the feature and lets you enable it or exclude apps. The app developer defines the channels; you control their settings.
Where does it apply? Google’s current guidance: Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices, with English or Japanese as the primary system language. Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later. Android 7.1 (API level 25) and earlier use per-app notification controls instead.
Can the two be used together? Yes. A message can be summarized while its channel determines how the alert is delivered. Yes. A channel can govern a message notification without changing the summary text itself.

They are complementary, not competing versions of the same setting. One is a content-management feature; the other is a notification-delivery framework.

What Pixel notification summaries do

Google describes notification summaries as short summaries of unread messages and long conversations. Instead of presenting every line in a lengthy exchange, the notification can show a condensed version. The feature works across popular messaging notifications, including Google Messages, Android Messages, WhatsApp and other supported apps.

A summarized alert is marked as a summary and includes a sparkle icon. Tap or expand it to inspect the full conversation. Summaries therefore do not delete messages, rewrite the chat history or prevent you from reading the original notification; they change the compact preview shown in the notification shade.

What counts as an eligible notification

The feature is aimed at unread messages and conversations that contain enough text to condense. A brief alert may remain unchanged because there is nothing useful to summarize. Google also says a summary may not be generated when the language cannot be detected, such as text that mixes languages, or when the notification contains only emoji.

Summaries are not guaranteed while you are actively using the phone. Google says the screen needs to be off for a moment before the system creates one. That behavior prevents the phone from waiting for a background summary while you are already looking at the conversation.

Who can use summaries and what languages are supported

Google’s current Pixel Help guidance limits AI notification summaries to Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. The same guidance says AI notifications work only in English and Japanese, and the primary system language must be English or Japanese before the summary setting is available.

Eligibility is a device-and-language requirement, not an Android notification-channel requirement. A phone can support notification channels even when it cannot use Pixel summaries. Conversely, owning an eligible Pixel does not make every notification summarizable: the app, message length, language detection and phone state still matter.

How to turn Pixel notification summaries on or off

Summaries are off by default. Use the following path on an eligible Pixel:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Open Notification summaries.
  4. Turn summaries on or off with the main switch.

The same screen is where you decide which apps may contribute notifications to summaries. If you want summaries generally but not from a particular messenger, leave the main feature on and add that app to Don’t include these apps.

Exclude one app without disabling the feature

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries.
  2. Find the Don’t include these apps list.
  3. Select the app you do not want summarized.
  4. Return to the notification shade and test a new message after the setting has taken effect.

Excluding an app affects summary generation for that app; it does not remove the app’s notifications or change that app’s Android notification-channel settings.

Why a summary is not showing

When the setting is enabled but alerts are still displayed normally, check the conditions that Google identifies as limiting summary generation.

1. Confirm device and language eligibility

  • Verify that the phone is a Pixel 9 or later and is not an A-series model.
  • Check that the primary system language is English or Japanese.
  • If the phone uses another primary language, the summary setting may be unavailable rather than merely malfunctioning.

2. Check the notification content

  • A short notification may not contain enough material for a summary.
  • Mixed-language text may prevent language detection.
  • An emoji-only notification may not produce a summary.
  • Look for an unread, longer conversation rather than a single short message.

3. Let the phone process the alert

Google says summaries may not be generated while you are actively using the phone. Lock the device and leave the screen off briefly, then check the notification shade again.

4. Review app exclusions

5. Check Android System Intelligence access

Google advises checking that Android System Intelligence is allowed in the settings for notification reading, replying and control. The exact wording can vary by software release, but the relevant permission area is the system page that governs those notification capabilities. If access is disabled, the AI component may not be able to process notification text.

6. Check Battery Saver and background updates

Battery Saver can restrict background work needed for AI processing. Check whether it is active or limiting the required service. Google also suggests connecting to Wi‑Fi and leaving the phone charging overnight so necessary AI updates can download in the background.

What Android notification channels are

A notification channel is an app-defined category for a particular type of notification. An app might separate conversations, reminders and system events into different categories so that you can treat them differently. The app chooses the channel structure; you decide how each channel behaves in Android’s system settings.

Android Developers states that, beginning with Android 8.0 (API level 26), every notification must be assigned to a channel or it does not appear. Notifications posted to the same channel share that channel’s behavior. Users can manage the channel’s visual and auditory options, including importance, sound and vibration.

Android settings may call a channel a category. If an app’s notification page lists categories rather than channels, those entries are the same control concept. On Android 7.1 (API level 25) and earlier, the channel model does not apply; those releases provide per-app notification management instead.

What channel settings control

  • Importance: how prominently the notification is treated.
  • Sound: whether the channel plays an alert sound and which sound is associated with it, where the system exposes that choice.
  • Vibration: whether the channel vibrates and how that behavior is configured, where available.
  • Visual behavior: how the notification is presented in system surfaces, subject to the controls exposed by the Android version and device maker.

Because channels are app-specific, the names and number of categories vary. One app may provide separate channels for direct messages and group chats; another may put all messages in one channel. You cannot infer an app’s channel design from another app’s settings.

How to manage a channel or category

Android’s labels differ by version and manufacturer, but the operation is consistent:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Notifications, then the area for app notifications.
  3. Select the app whose alerts you want to change.
  4. Open the listed channel or category.
  5. Adjust the available importance, sound, vibration and visual options.

You can also reach a channel from a posted notification by pressing and holding the alert and opening its notification settings, if your device offers that shortcut. The app remains responsible for assigning each new notification to a channel; your settings determine what happens after that assignment.

How summaries and channels interact

Think of a notification as having two independent questions:

Best Value
Sale
Google Pixel 9 Pro, 128GB, Obsidian - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 128gb of storage
  • Includes charging cord and box
  • Excellent cosmetic condition
  1. What should the text say? A Pixel summary can condense eligible unread message content.
  2. How should the alert behave? The assigned Android channel supplies the user-controlled importance, sound, vibration and presentation rules.

For example, a long conversation from a supported messaging app may receive a summarized preview on an eligible Pixel. The app’s message channel still determines whether that notification is treated as high or low importance, makes a sound, vibrates or appears with the channel’s chosen visual behavior. Changing the channel does not create a summary, and enabling summaries does not create new channels.

The settings also have different scopes. The summary screen controls the Pixel-wide summary feature and app exclusions. A channel setting applies to one category inside one app. Muting a channel therefore does not mute every category from that app, while excluding an app from summaries does not silence its notifications.

Which setting should you change?

Your goal Use this control Why
Shorten long message previews Pixel notification summaries Summaries change the content of eligible unread-message notifications.
Stop one messenger from being summarized Don’t include these apps You retain the app’s normal notifications while excluding it from AI summaries.
Silence group-chat alerts but keep direct messages audible The app’s notification channels or categories The app may provide separate categories whose sound and importance can be adjusted independently.
Make one notification type more prominent That channel’s importance and visual settings Channels govern how notifications in that category alert and appear.
Use summaries on an older or unsupported phone There is no channel setting that enables them Summaries have the Pixel-generation and language requirements described by Google; channels are a separate Android framework.

Version and compatibility boundaries

Feature Minimum or supported scope Important qualification
Pixel notification summaries Pixel 9 and later A-series devices are excluded under Google’s current guidance; the primary system language must be English or Japanese.
Android notification channels Android 8.0, API level 26, and later Every notification must be assigned to a channel. Android 7.1/API 25 and earlier use per-app controls instead.

These boundaries explain why the features are often confused. A user may see channel controls on many Android phones, while the Pixel summary switch appears only on supported models and language configurations.

Practical examples

Long family conversation

On an eligible Pixel using English or Japanese, a long unread family chat may appear as a concise summary marked with the summary label and sparkle icon. The conversation’s assigned channel still determines whether the alert makes a sound or vibrates. Expand or tap the notification to read the full thread.

Short one-line code or appointment alert

A short message may remain unchanged because there is little text to condense. If the alert is too loud or intrusive, adjust its channel rather than expecting a summary setting to alter its wording.

Mixed-language or emoji-only message

Language detection may fail for mixed-language text, and emoji-only content may not be summarized. The channel can still control the alert’s sound, vibration and importance because channel behavior is independent of summary generation.

Different treatment for one app

If you want normal previews from one messaging app but summaries from others, add that app to Don’t include these apps. If you want all of its notifications but only some categories to alert, adjust the individual channels instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What each feature cannot do

  • Notification summaries cannot guarantee that every message will be condensed; short, undetectable-language and emoji-only alerts may be left unsummarized.
  • Summaries cannot replace the full conversation; expanding the alert is still required to read the complete thread.
  • Notification channels cannot summarize, rewrite or shorten notification text.
  • Channels cannot make Pixel summaries available on an unsupported device or language.
  • Changing a channel does not override an app exclusion from summaries, and enabling summaries does not change channel importance or sound.

Bottom line for Pixel users

Use notification summaries when the problem is information overload in message text. Use notification channels when the problem is interruption: unwanted sound, vibration, low visibility or excessive prominence from a particular notification category. On a supported Pixel, set both independently—choose which apps may be summarized, then tune each app’s channels for the way you want those alerts delivered.
