If your Google Pixel rings, vibrates, or plays sounds while its screen stays black, the phone may still be running—but those signs do not identify the cause. Check power and try Google’s restart steps first. If the phone rings but the display remains blank, Google recommends contacting an authorized repair center.
Is the Pixel off, frozen, or responding with a black screen?
A blank display can accompany a drained battery or an unresponsive phone. But if the Pixel rings, vibrates, or plays audio, it is responding even though you cannot see the screen. These signs do not prove which display component, if any, has failed.
Start with Google’s troubleshooting steps for a Pixel that will not charge or turn on. Follow the instructions shown for your device and region if they differ from the general steps below.

Check charging and power before assuming the phone is dead
- Connect the Pixel to a known-working charging cable and adapter.
- Check that the outlet works and that both ends of the cable are firmly connected.
- Remove a case or attachment if it may be interfering with the charging connection.
- Leave the phone connected if its battery may be fully drained. Google says a Pixel that has been off for a long time may show no charging icon, vibration, or display response for up to 25 minutes after it is plugged in.
A charger check can help rule out a power problem; it is not a screen repair and should not be expected to fix a display fault.

Force a restart, then check whether the phone responds
- Hold the Pixel’s Power button for about 35 seconds.
- Wait about two minutes for the phone to restart.
- Call the phone or use Find Hub to make it ring.
These timings and checks come from Google’s current troubleshooting guidance; consult its page if the instructions for your Pixel differ. If the phone rings but the screen is still blank, Google’s direction is to contact your local authorized repair center.
Choose the next step based on what happens

Find an authorized repair option for your model and location
Google’s Pixel repair page provides information about authorized partner locations and ways to start a repair. You can also check the support tab in the My Pixel app if it is available to you. Repair availability depends on location and device.

Before buying a replacement screen or parts, identify the exact Pixel model: displays are model-specific. Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair tool covers supported software and update procedures; its existence does not establish that a hardware display fault can be fixed with software.

Google documents a manual reset through Fastboot, but it erases all device data. Back up first if possible, and do not treat a destructive reset as the first response to a black display that you cannot operate. If the phone rings with the screen still blank, follow Google’s repair guidance instead.
