Google Pixel uses AI in two distinct ways: Gemini acts as the assistant on Pixel 9 and later phones, while separate Pixel features—such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Pixel Screenshots, Magic Cue and Call Assist—handle specific tasks on supported models. Which features you get depends on the phone and on availability conditions such as language, location, account eligibility and permissions.
What does AI do on a Google Pixel?
Gemini is Google’s conversational assistant. You can ask it for help with writing, brainstorming, learning, summarizing information, planning, or understanding a photo or supported on-screen content. It accepts text, voice, images and camera input. These are capabilities Google documents, not a guarantee that every request or context will work.
Pixel also includes named AI-powered features for particular situations. Google’s specifications list features such as Gemini Nano, Gemini Live, Pixel Screenshots, Magic Cue, Circle to Search, Live Translate and Call Assist on applicable devices. They are not a single package available on every Pixel; check the specifications for the exact model.

Google identifies Gemini as the default assistant on Pixel 9 and later phones. Depending on your device and setup, you can start it by saying “Hey Google,” holding the power button, opening Gemini from the Google app, or launching the Gemini app.

Gemini app availability is a separate matter from having Gemini as the phone’s default assistant or having access to model-specific Pixel features. Google’s help page says the app can be downloaded on Pixel devices that meet its stated minimum of Android 10 and 2 GB of RAM. Meeting that requirement does not establish eligibility for every Pixel feature.
What can Gemini help with?
- Writing and ideas: Draft or revise text, brainstorm, and explore a topic.
- Learning and summaries: Ask questions or request summaries, including of information in Gmail or Drive when the relevant connection and permissions are available.
- Photos and screen content: Ask about an image or, in supported contexts, material currently on screen.
- Planning: Get help with plans involving services such as Maps or Flights.
Gemini can connect to Google services including Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive and Keep through extensions. Some uses involve access to personal information or content, so review the permissions and connected services before relying on them.

How do Pixel’s other AI features differ?
Gemini is a general-purpose assistant; the other names refer to more specific capabilities. Google’s model specifications are the place to verify which ones are listed for a given phone.

- Pixel Screenshots and Magic Cue: Named Pixel features listed for applicable devices; support is model-specific.
- Call Assist: Call-related assistance listed for applicable devices; do not assume identical availability across models or regions.
- Gemini Nano and Gemini Live: Google’s specifications list these on applicable devices. Their inclusion is not universal across the Pixel line.
These feature names should not be treated as proof that a particular phone supports them. Software, region, language and account requirements can also affect whether a listed capability is usable.

Google says availability can depend on factors including country, language, age, account type and permissions. Some languages, supervised accounts, and work or school accounts have restrictions. The availability of Gemini mobile apps varies by location and language, and Google says expansion is subject to local regulations and its AI principles.
Gemini may also lack familiar Google Assistant functions. If a function you need is unsupported, Google says you can switch back to Assistant. Check Google’s current help and the specifications for your exact Pixel model rather than assuming app availability means every feature is enabled.

What should you keep in mind when using Pixel AI?
- Check important answers. Google warns that Gemini responses can be inaccurate and advises users to double-check them.
- Do not treat it as professional advice. Google says not to rely on Gemini for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
- Review access. Connected services may involve permissions to use personal information or content.
- Verify the specific setup. Model, software, location, language, age and account conditions can all affect availability.
