For a Samsung phone set up in 2026, Google Photos is the more direct photo-backup workflow. Its Android app lets you choose a Google account, select device folders, set upload quality and review backup status in one place. OneDrive is still a valid cloud destination, but it now requires its own Camera backup feature: Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026, and OneDrive photos are no longer displayed inside Samsung Gallery.
Choose based on where you want to browse the archive, whether preserving full captured resolution matters, which account has available storage and whether your existing files already live in Microsoft’s cloud.
The practical difference in 2026
These services can both store photos from a Samsung phone, but they no longer connect to Samsung’s Gallery in the same way. Google Photos is an Android photo-library app with controls for folders, upload quality and mobile-data use. OneDrive is a general Microsoft cloud-storage app whose Camera backup uploads phone photos into OneDrive; it is no longer a Gallery-integrated destination.
The decisive date is September 30, 2026. Samsung Gallery direct synchronization with OneDrive ended on that date. Files that had already been synchronized remain in OneDrive, but Samsung Gallery no longer shows those cloud copies. Microsoft’s transition guidance says to use Camera backup in the OneDrive Android app for new uploads and to manage the cloud library in OneDrive itself.

Google Photos and OneDrive compared by the decision that matters
| What you want to do | Better fit or current reality | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Use a photo-focused library on Android | Google Photos | It combines backup, device-folder selection and quality controls in one app. |
| Keep browsing cloud photos in Samsung Gallery | Neither provides the former OneDrive link | Samsung Gallery direct OneDrive sync ended September 30, 2026. Existing cloud files are viewed in OneDrive. |
| Keep new phone photos in Microsoft cloud storage | OneDrive Camera backup | Turn it on in the OneDrive Android app, choose the correct Microsoft account and review network and video settings. |
| Preserve captured resolution with a documented setting | Google Photos Original quality | Original quality uses the captured resolution and consumes Google Account storage. |
| Use the largest free allowance | Google has the larger headline allowance | Google provides up to 15 GB per standard account, shared across Google services; Microsoft provides 5 GB shared across Microsoft cloud services. Existing files and mail attachments reduce what is available for photos. |
| Back up screenshots, downloads or messaging folders | Google Photos offers explicit device-folder choices | Enable the folders you actually need. For OneDrive, inspect Camera backup’s inclusion controls on your phone rather than assuming every folder is included. |
What happened to Samsung Gallery and OneDrive
The old Gallery switch is no longer a current backup route
Older Samsung setup guides may tell you to link Samsung Gallery to OneDrive. That instruction is obsolete after September 30, 2026. The Gallery account-link behavior and direct display of OneDrive photos ended with the service change. Leaving an old Gallery switch enabled does not create the new OneDrive backup path.
Your existing OneDrive files were not deleted by the change
Photos and videos that had already reached OneDrive remain stored there. They may disappear from the Samsung Gallery view while continuing to appear in the OneDrive app and OneDrive web library. A missing thumbnail in Gallery therefore does not, by itself, prove that the underlying cloud file was erased.
New uploads must use OneDrive Camera backup
Microsoft’s current instruction for affected users is to open OneDrive for Android and enable Camera backup. This is a separate workflow from Samsung Gallery. OneDrive becomes the place where you browse and manage those cloud copies.

- Open Google Photos and sign in. Use the Google Account that should retain the archive. If your phone has several accounts, do not assume the first account shown is the one with the intended storage.
- Open Photos settings, then Backup. Turn on Backup. Confirm the account displayed in Backup settings before uploading a large library.
- Choose an upload quality. Select Original quality when retaining captured resolution is the priority. Select Storage saver when reducing cloud usage is more important.
- Choose device folders. In Backup settings, review folders beyond the camera folder. Enable Screenshots, downloads, messaging-app folders or other locations only when those images belong in the archive. Leaving a folder disabled means its contents are not covered by that Google Photos folder selection.
- Set mobile-data behavior. Review the available mobile-data limits before allowing a large first upload over cellular service. A Wi-Fi-only approach may be preferable for a new library or videos.
- Verify individual items. Open several recent photos and videos and inspect their backup status or details. A visible item, an installed app or an enabled switch is not proof that the item has finished uploading.
What Google Photos quality settings actually do
| Setting | Effect | Storage consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Stores photos and videos at the same resolution captured. | Uses Google Account storage. |
| Storage saver | Photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 MP; videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. | Uses Google Account storage under current rules. Some media cannot be compressed and remains at its original file size. |
Storage saver is not a promise that every file becomes small. Google says some media cannot be compressed. It also notes a historical exception for items uploaded before June 1, 2021; do not apply that exception to new uploads made under the current rules.
How the connected Samsung gallery account can cause confusion
Google’s Android guidance says a connected default gallery can use the account configured for Google Photos backup. If a Samsung gallery integration presents an account choice, compare it with the account shown in Google Photos’ Backup settings. This prevents a photo from being uploaded under a different Google identity than the one you intended.
How to set up OneDrive Camera backup after the Gallery change
Use this route when Microsoft storage is your preferred destination or when your existing archive is already in OneDrive.
- Open the OneDrive app for Android. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should hold the phone photos.
- Open the account profile and Camera backup. Select the correct account if OneDrive offers more than one, then turn Camera backup on.
- Grant photo and video access. Allow access to all relevant media. A restricted permission can result in an incomplete camera upload even though Camera backup is enabled.
- Review video inclusion. Confirm whether videos are included according to your preference. Video uploads can consume quota quickly.
- Review network behavior. Check the app’s Wi-Fi and mobile-data choices before the first large upload. Match them to your data plan and charging routine.
- Check available quota. Open OneDrive’s storage information and make sure enough Microsoft cloud space remains for the intended upload.
- Test with a new file. Take a photo, then confirm that it appears in OneDrive. Do not use the former Samsung Gallery synchronization switch as evidence that the new Camera backup is working.
The exact screen labels and permission prompts can vary with the Samsung model, Android release and OneDrive version. The account, permission, network and quota checks are the important parts of the setup.

Storage limits: compare usable space, not the headline number
| Service | Free allowance described by the provider | What shares that allowance | What happens at the limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Photos | Up to 15 GB per standard Google Account. | Google services, including photos and videos plus other account data. | New uploads can be affected when the account has no remaining space. Google also says photos and videos may be deleted if the user is inactive in Google Photos for two or more years or remains over quota for two or more years. |
| OneDrive | 5 GB of free cloud storage. | OneDrive files and photos and other Microsoft cloud services. | Microsoft says an over-quota account cannot upload or sync new files, including camera-roll files. |
Neither allowance is a photo-only bucket. Documents, email attachments and other cloud data can consume the same capacity. Before choosing a service, inspect the account’s remaining space rather than comparing 15 GB with 5 GB as if all of it were available for the camera roll.
Storage plans and subscription terms can change. If you are near the limit, use the current storage page in the relevant Google or Microsoft account before committing a large library or relying on a plan price.
Choosing between Original quality and Storage saver
Choose Original quality when the file itself is the archive
Original quality is the documented Google Photos option for keeping the captured resolution. It is the sensible choice for photos that may later be printed, edited or used as the source for another export. The trade-off is direct consumption of Google Account storage, including for large videos.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Storage saver when space and everyday viewing matter more
Storage saver can reduce the dimensions of high-resolution photos and videos, but it changes the stored copy: images above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP and video above 1080p is resized to 1080p. Some files remain at their original size because they cannot be compressed. Under current rules, new Storage saver uploads count toward account storage.

OneDrive does not have a comparable setting established here
The available OneDrive guidance describes Camera backup controls for account, permissions, video inclusion and network use, but it does not establish a OneDrive quality mode equivalent to Google Photos’ documented Original quality or Storage saver choices. After an upload, open a representative file in OneDrive and verify its dimensions and file details if preserving the source file matters to you. Do not assume that choosing OneDrive automatically means original-resolution storage without checking an uploaded file.
Moving from the old Samsung Gallery workflow
- Leave existing files in place while you audit them. The September 30 change removed the Gallery view; it did not require you to delete or re-upload files already stored in OneDrive.
- Open OneDrive and locate the camera folders. Confirm that older photos and videos are present in the Microsoft account you intend to keep.
- Decide whether Google Photos should become a second archive. If so, set up Google Photos with the intended account, quality and device folders. Avoid enabling a second service blindly if your available storage cannot support another copy.
- Enable OneDrive Camera backup for future captures. This preserves the Microsoft workflow for new phone photos, but the cloud library will be managed in OneDrive rather than Samsung Gallery.
- Check a new upload in the destination app. Take a test photo and verify it in OneDrive or Google Photos, depending on which backup you enabled. Also inspect the item’s backup status where the app provides it.
If a cloud photo vanishes from Gallery after the transition, first check OneDrive directly. The change affects the Gallery display and account link, not the continued existence of already synchronized OneDrive files.

A photo appears on the phone but not in the cloud
- In Google Photos, open the item and inspect its backup status/details. Confirm that Backup is enabled and that the selected device folder includes the item’s folder.
- In OneDrive, confirm Camera backup is enabled under the correct Microsoft account, photo access was granted and the account is not over quota.
- Check whether the app is waiting for an allowed network condition or whether videos were excluded by the selected Camera backup settings.
The wrong account contains the upload
- Compare the account shown in Google Photos Backup settings with the account you intended to own the archive.
- In OneDrive, open the account profile and verify the account selected for Camera backup.
- Do not delete a mistakenly uploaded copy until you have confirmed whether another account or device still needs it.
OneDrive says there is no room
Check the total Microsoft cloud quota, not just the camera folder. Microsoft’s 5 GB free allowance is shared across Microsoft cloud services, and an over-quota account cannot upload or sync new files, including camera-roll files. Free space or move non-photo data before expecting new captures to appear.
Google Photos is full or approaching its limit
Review what is consuming the shared Google Account allowance. If retaining captured resolution is essential, keep Original quality and plan capacity around the actual library size. If reducing dimensions is acceptable, Storage saver changes files above the documented thresholds but still counts new uploads toward storage under current rules.

Gallery no longer shows OneDrive photos
This is expected after September 30, 2026. Open the OneDrive app to view and manage those cloud files. Re-enabling an old Samsung Gallery link cannot restore a discontinued integration.
Which service fits common Samsung-phone situations?
You want the simplest photo-first setup
Choose Google Photos. The Android workflow covers account selection, backup, device folders, quality and item-level status in one photo application. It is the better fit when your priority is a searchable, photo-centric library rather than Microsoft file storage.
Your family or work files already live in OneDrive
Choose OneDrive Camera backup if keeping photos beside existing Microsoft cloud files is more useful than having a separate photo library. Accept that Samsung Gallery is no longer the browsing surface and verify the Microsoft quota before uploading.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You need screenshots and selected app folders
Google Photos offers explicit device-folder selection, making it easier to include or exclude Screenshots, downloads and messaging folders intentionally. With OneDrive, inspect the Camera backup controls on the specific phone and confirm what is included; do not infer full-device-folder coverage from the name “Camera backup.”
You need a full-resolution working archive
Google Photos provides a clearly documented Original quality mode. OneDrive may still be suitable, but verify the dimensions and file details of uploaded examples because the available Camera backup guidance does not establish an equivalent quality selector.
You previously relied on Gallery’s OneDrive view
Keep the files in OneDrive and switch new uploads to OneDrive Camera backup. Use OneDrive itself for cloud browsing. If you also want Google Photos’ photo-library controls, configure it separately and confirm which account and folders it is backing up.
A safe operating routine after setup
- After enabling either service, verify several recent photos and at least one video individually.
- Recheck the destination account whenever you add another Google or Microsoft account to the phone.
- Review shared storage periodically because photos compete with other cloud data.
- Before deleting local originals, confirm that the cloud copy opens from the destination app and shows the expected resolution or file details.
- When Samsung Gallery does not show a former OneDrive item, check OneDrive rather than treating the Gallery display as the authoritative cloud record.
- Revisit mobile-data, video and folder settings after an app update or phone migration, since available screens can vary by Samsung model, Android version, permissions and account subscription.
The decision
For most Samsung owners starting a photo backup in 2026, Google Photos is the more straightforward choice: it is photo-centric, supports selected device folders and documents the Original quality versus Storage saver trade-off. OneDrive remains the right destination when Microsoft storage is the priority, provided you use Camera backup in the OneDrive Android app, monitor the shared 5 GB free quota or your current plan and accept that Samsung Gallery no longer displays the OneDrive library.
