If Google Photos is not recognizing people, first identify which problem you have: Face Groups may be unavailable or disabled, older groups may be waiting to process newer photos, or one photo may have an incorrect label. On Android, Google’s recommended fix for old groups missing recent photos is to keep Face Groups enabled, disable power saving, charge the phone, open Google Photos, and leave it connected to Wi-Fi overnight. Do not switch Face Groups off and on as a refresh: Google says that deletes your face groups, face models, and labels.
The safest approach is diagnostic rather than destructive. Check availability and the setting first, then use the overnight procedure only when existing groups are missing newer images. If the problem concerns one picture, edit that picture’s label instead of rebuilding the entire library.
Start by identifying what is failing
Google Photos calls its face-recognition feature Face Groups. In some app versions, the setting is labeled Group similar faces, and the resulting albums appear under People & pets. The correct remedy depends on whether the feature is missing, disabled, still processing, or simply wrong about an individual image.

Check whether Face Groups is available and enabled
Google does not offer Face Groups in every geographic region, domain, or account type. Therefore, a missing People & pets section is not automatically an app failure. First verify that your account can use the feature and that it is switched on.

Android instructions
- Open Google Photos and make sure you are signed in to the account that contains the photos.
- Tap your profile photo or initials.
- Open Photos settings, then Privacy.
- Find Face Groups and confirm that it is enabled.
Google also documents an alternate menu route in some versions: open Preferences, then Group similar faces. Labels can differ between app releases, so look for either wording rather than assuming a missing label means the feature was removed.
Computer instructions
- Sign in to Google Photos in a browser.
- Open
photos.google.com/settings. - Expand Group similar faces.
- Turn on Face Groups if the control is available.
Platform instructions are not interchangeable. The Android app exposes the control through its profile and settings menus, while the computer version uses the settings page. If the control does not appear in either place, check the account and location first. Google lists region, domain, and account-type restrictions as possible reasons for unavailability. Creating a second account or repeatedly reinstalling the app will not overcome an account-level or geographic restriction.
What you need before troubleshooting
For the documented Android processing procedure, prepare the conditions Google specifies:
- An Android device signed in to the Google Account that owns the library.
- Face Groups left switched on.
- Power saving disabled for the processing period.
- A charger connected so the phone can remain powered.
- A working Wi-Fi connection.
- Google Photos open on the device.
- The latest available version of the Google Photos app.
These are processing conditions, not purchases. Google does not identify extra storage, a special accessory, particular lighting, or a newer phone as a remedy for missing face groups. Buying hardware or a Google One plan is therefore not an established fix for this symptom.
Fix older groups that do not contain newer photos
This is the situation for which Google publishes a specific refresh procedure: existing face groups contain older images, but recent pictures have not appeared. The process gives Google Photos time and suitable device conditions to perform its background analysis; Google does not promise a fixed completion time.
- Leave Face Groups on. Do not disable it as a test. Turning it off deletes the face data described in the privacy section below.
- Turn off power saving. Use your phone’s device settings to disable battery-saver or power-saving mode for the processing period.
- Connect the phone to its charger. Keep it plugged in rather than relying on the battery.
- Open Google Photos. Leave the app available on the device after opening it.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Keep the phone on a Wi-Fi connection while it processes.
- Leave the phone overnight. Google’s instructions specifically call for leaving the device plugged in, on Wi-Fi, and available overnight.
- Check the groups the next day. If only some of the newer photos have appeared, Google suggests repeating the same setup for one more night.
- Update Google Photos. Google also advises ensuring that the app is updated to its latest available version.
This is guidance for an old-groups/new-photos problem, not a guaranteed cure for every Face Groups failure. Google explicitly cautions that these steps might not help when Face Groups is enabled but no face groups exist at all. The overnight instruction is also not a published processing-time guarantee: some libraries may still need additional time, and Google does not state a universal number of hours.
Why the phone must stay available
The overnight setup is designed for background processing. A phone that is unplugged, in power-saving mode, offline, or no longer running Google Photos does not meet the conditions in Google’s instructions. Keep the device connected and undisturbed for the full night, then inspect the existing groups rather than assuming that no immediate change means the feature is broken.

If only a portion of the recent library appears after the first night, repeat the same procedure for one additional night. Do not keep toggling settings between attempts; doing so can destroy the groups you are trying to preserve.
If no face groups have ever appeared
When People & pets has never populated, treat the problem differently from delayed indexing. Recheck the account, region, domain, and account type, then verify the setting through the Android or computer path above. If Face Groups is unavailable, there is no supported setting that can force it to appear.
If the feature is available and enabled but the account still has no groups, Google says the Android overnight procedure may not help. Do not interpret that warning as proof that your photos are damaged; it means the published refresh steps are aimed at libraries where groups already exist and newer images are missing. Avoid destructive experiments such as turning Face Groups off and back on, because that removes existing face groups and the models and labels associated with them.
Separate an empty result from a hidden result
Check that you are viewing the same Google Account that contains the photos. Face groups are account-specific, so changing accounts can make a familiar People & pets area appear empty even though another account has groups. If the setting itself is absent, that points toward availability or account eligibility rather than a processing delay. If the setting is present and enabled but no group has ever been created, Google’s warning about the limits of the overnight procedure applies.
Correct one missing or incorrectly grouped photo
Automatic grouping is not perfect. If a person’s group exists but a particular image is absent, or an image was assigned to the wrong person, Google allows you to edit that photo’s face-group label. The control is not available in every country.
- Open the affected photo in Google Photos on Android.
- Open the photo’s information panel.
- Find the People or face-group label shown for the image.
- Use the available control to remove the wrong label, add the correct person, or change the label.
- Return to the person’s group and verify that the correction is reflected there.
Manual correction addresses that image; it is not a promise that every similar photo will be reclassified immediately. If many recent images are absent, use the overnight procedure instead of editing them one by one. Conversely, if only one image is wrong, manually correcting it is less disruptive than changing a library-wide setting.
How Google Photos decides which faces belong together
Google describes the process in three broad stages. First, Photos detects whether an image contains a face. When Face Groups is enabled, it creates numerical face models from detected faces. It then groups photos whose models are sufficiently similar and likely to represent the same person.

Face visibility is not the only signal. Google says that other cues, such as photos taken close together in time or similar clothing, may contribute when a face is not clearly visible. That explains why a person can occasionally appear in a group even when the face is partly hidden, and why a visually similar image can be assigned incorrectly. The system is probabilistic, so no setting can guarantee that every face in every photo will be recognized.

This also explains several common-looking contradictions: a clear face can be missed, a turned-away subject can be included, and two people with similar appearances can be mixed. Those outcomes do not necessarily indicate that the setting is disabled. Use the symptom-based approach: delayed batches call for processing time, while isolated errors call for label edits.
Do not use the off-and-on toggle as a reset
Turning Face Groups off is fundamentally different from pausing recognition. Google states that disabling it deletes all of the following from the account:
- Face groups in the account.
- Face models used to create those groups.
- Face labels that you created.
That is why the common advice to switch the feature off and back on is unsafe when older groups matter to you. The supported approach for missing recent images is to leave the feature enabled and provide the charging, Wi-Fi, and overnight conditions Google specifies.
Re-enabling the setting does not function as a guaranteed rebuild command. It can leave you with no previous groups, models, or labels to compare against, making it harder to tell whether newer images were ever processed. Preserve the current state until you have tried the non-destructive steps.
Privacy and retention implications
Google says face groups and labels are private to each account and are not shared when you share photos. It also notes that face models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions, so the legal treatment can depend on where you are located.
Google’s retention information says face-group content is deleted when Google Photos has been inactive for more than two years. This is an account-retention policy, not a troubleshooting timer: it does not mean a library will be processed after two years, and it does not provide a way to restore missing groups.

Deleting the Google Account also removes the associated face-group information. Consider these consequences before changing the Face Groups setting or deleting account data. Sharing an individual photo does not make your private face labels visible to recipients, according to Google’s description, but anyone with access to the account can still see its People & pets organization.

- Confirm that Face Groups is available for your region, domain, and account type.
- Check the setting through Google Photos settings on Android or

- Repeat the overnight setup once if only some photos appear.

When to stop troubleshooting
If the setting is unavailable for your account or location, the issue cannot be fixed with charging, cache changes, storage purchases, or another phone. If the feature is enabled, existing groups are present, and newer images remain absent after the documented overnight attempts, you have reached the limits of Google’s published procedure; there is no official processing-time promise or universal manual rebuild command. Preserve your existing groups by leaving Face Groups enabled and use manual labels for individual images that need correction.

What if Face Groups is enabled but no group has ever appeared?
Verify regional, domain, and account-type availability and confirm that you are using the account containing the photos. Google warns that the overnight refresh steps may not help when there are no groups at all.
Can I fix one photo that was assigned to the wrong person?
