Short answer: edits saved to the original photo can generally be undone with Edit → Revert → Save. Save as copy creates a separate edited file, leaves the original untouched, and cannot be undone with Google Photos’ Revert control. Because Google may hide the Save-to-original option for some edits, check the choices shown for the specific photo and device before saving.
Save and Save as copy are different workflows
Google Photos presents two possible ways to commit an edit. The wording and button placement can vary by platform, but the consequences are distinct.

Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad instructions document both choices and warn that Save may not be available for certain edits. If the editor shows only Save as copy, do not assume that a hidden original-saving option exists. The available controls are the authority for that photo and platform. What Revert actually restores
Revert is the control Google Photos provides for undoing edits made to an edited photo. It is not a general file-recovery command and it does not merge a copy back into its source. When an original-saved edit is still eligible, Revert returns the photo to its prior version and requires a further Save to commit that restoration.

A copy behaves differently. Saving a copy leaves the source intact, so you can simply keep the source and delete the unwanted edited copy. Revert will not rewrite that copy back to an earlier state, and deleting the copy does not perform an additional restoration of the source; the source was never changed by that operation.
Undo an edit on Android
Google’s Android workflow uses the Photos editor. The exact set of tools depends on the phone and account, but the undo path is consistent for an edit that was saved to the original.
- Open Google Photos and select the edited photo.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Revert. If Revert is present, Google is identifying the photo as one with an undoable edit.
- Review the preview, then tap Save to commit the restored version.
While making an edit, press and hold the preview to compare the current view with the original. Do this before saving if you are unsure whether a crop, filter, adjustment, or other change is helping.

Android tools do not all have the same hardware requirements
The Android editor can include categories such as Markup, Filters, Crop, Adjust, and Actions, with tools including Magic Eraser, Unblur, and Best Take. Google lists baseline eligibility of Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM for most features on supported devices; some tools require 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM. Those figures describe whether a tool can run, not whether an edit is reversible. Check Google’s current Android help page for feature-specific requirements because availability can change.

Undo an edit on iPhone or iPad
On iOS and iPadOS, Google documents the same distinction between saving to the original and saving a copy.
- Open the photo in Google Photos.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose Revert to discard an edit that was saved to the original.
- Tap Save to apply the restored version.
The Save control appears at the bottom of the editor. Depending on the edit, Google may offer Save, Save as copy, or only the copy option. A copy cannot be undone through Revert, so use it deliberately when you want the source protected.
Google’s iOS help page lists iOS 18 and 3 GB of RAM for most editing features, with higher memory requirements for some tools. These are product eligibility specifications, not a guarantee that every tool appears on every device. They are version-sensitive; verify the current requirements on Google’s iPhone and iPad documentation before troubleshooting a missing tool.
Undo an edit on a computer
Use the desktop browser at photos.google.com for Google’s documented computer workflow:

- Open photos.google.com and select the edited photo.
- Click Edit.
- Click Revert.
- Click Save to store the restored photo.
Google notes that some editing features are unavailable on mobile web. Do not assume that a phone browser has the same editor or the same Save choices as the desktop site. If you are using a mobile browser, switch to the Google Photos app or a desktop browser before concluding that an option is missing. The computer instructions are documented at Google Photos Help.
If Revert is missing
A missing Revert button does not prove that Google Photos destroyed the original. Google’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several documented explanations and one important limit.
The photo was never edited, or it was already reverted
Google says Revert may be absent when the photo has no edit history or when it has already been reverted. Check another image that you know was edited and saved to the original. If Revert appears there, the first photo may simply have no remaining original-saved edit for Photos to undo.
You saved the result as a copy
When Save as copy was used, the original should still be available as a separate, unedited item. Look for the original in the same date range, album, or search results. The edited copy itself has no Revert history according to Google, so deleting it is the practical cleanup step if you no longer want it.

The camera app wrote the file incorrectly
Google’s “My photos appear incorrectly” guidance warns that Google Photos cannot recover an original file that was saved incorrectly by the camera app. This is different from an ordinary Photos edit: if the camera or another application overwrote the only source file before backup, Revert cannot recreate the missing data. The documented troubleshooting page is Google’s photo-file guidance.
The editor or platform is different
Button names and placement differ between Android, iPhone/iPad, desktop browsers, and mobile web. Confirm that you opened the image in Google Photos, not a gallery app or another editor, and try the platform-specific steps above. Google also says some edits do not offer Save to the original, so a copy-only result can be expected rather than a fault.
Shared albums: reversibility also affects who sees the edit
In a shared album, Google says only the owner of the original photo or video can edit that shared item. If the owner saves changes to the shared item, the edited result can be visible to the people who already have access to the album. To work privately, Google documents Save as copy as the route that keeps the edit separate from the shared original. Device wording may differ, but the privacy decision is the same: do not save to the shared item when viewers should continue seeing the unedited version. Choosing the safer option before you edit
Choose Save when all of these are true
- You are comfortable making the edited version the current version of the original.
- The editor offers Save, not only Save as copy.
- You want the option to use Revert later.
- The photo is not a shared item whose viewers should retain the unedited appearance.
Choose Save as copy when any of these are true
- The original must remain untouched for records, printing, legal documentation, or future editing.
- You are experimenting with a strong crop, filter, or adjustment and want a safe comparison.
- You are editing a photo in a shared album but do not want the change visible to album viewers.
- You are unsure whether the current editor will preserve a revertable history.
A useful habit is to inspect the buttons before doing detailed work. If the editor does not present Save to the original, treat the operation as copy-only and keep the source item identified before proceeding.

Three common scenarios
You applied a filter and saved to the original
Open the photo, choose Edit, tap or click Revert, and save. The restoration is a new save of the prior version; do not exit after selecting Revert if the interface still asks you to save.
You cropped a photo and chose Save as copy
The uncropped original should remain unchanged. Keep it if you need the full frame, and delete the cropped copy if it is unwanted. Revert will not provide an additional undo step for that copy.
You edited a shared-album photo and friends can now see the change
Only the original owner can edit the shared item. If the owner saved to that item, viewers may see the changed version. For future private edits, create a copy instead; for an already shared change, the owner must use the available Revert workflow on the shared original or manage the copy and sharing state separately.

- Revert is not guaranteed for every edit or every platform; Google says Save to the original may be unavailable for some edits.
- Copy edits do not carry a Revert history.
- Tool eligibility does not determine reversibility. A feature may require a particular Android version or amount of RAM yet still follow the same Save and Save as copy rules.
- Google Photos cannot reconstruct an original that another app or a camera process overwrote incorrectly.
- Mobile web does not expose every feature available in the apps or desktop browser.
The reliable distinction is therefore the save destination: an edit committed to the original is generally reversible through Revert, while Save as copy protects the source by creating a separate file rather than by maintaining an undo timeline.
