Short answer: In Google Photos, Save applies an edit to the original item when that option is available, while Save as copy creates a separate edited photo and leaves the unedited item unchanged. If backup is enabled, the edit synchronizes to your Google Photos account. The independent backup-quality setting—Original quality, Storage saver, or Express—determines the resolution and compression of the backed-up file; it does not decide whether an edit replaces or duplicates an item.
The exact buttons and available features can differ between Android, iPhone or iPad, and computer. Use the item’s Details panel to verify what was backed up rather than inferring quality from the editor’s Save button.
The three settings that answer most “lost original” questions
Google Photos combines three separate decisions that are easy to confuse:

- Editor save choice: Save changes the existing photo when available; Save as copy creates a new edited item.
- Backup status: When backup is on, edits synchronize to the Google Photos account. Backup is the route by which the account receives the edited result; it is not a duplicate-making command.
- Backup quality: Original quality, Storage saver, and (where offered) Express control stored resolution, compression, and account-storage use.
Google documents these behaviors in its platform help for Android, iPhone and iPad, and computer.

Does Google Photos overwrite the original?
Choose Save as copy when the untouched photo matters
On Android and iOS, Google Photos says Save as copy “Makes a new photo with your edits without changes to the original.” The result is a second library item: one remains unedited and the other contains your crop, lighting adjustment, filter, or other changes. This is the safest choice before an irreversible-looking crop, annotation, or retouch.
A copy has an important limitation: Google says the editor’s Revert action cannot undo changes to a photo saved as a copy. Revert can undo changes on an edited item when that item still has an editable history, but it cannot turn the copied file back into the pre-edit source. Keep the original item until you are certain the copy is the version you want.
What Save does
Save applies changes to the original photo when Google Photos offers that option. “Original” here means the existing item in your Photos library, not necessarily an untouched camera file stored elsewhere. Google notes that Save may not be available for certain edits, so the buttons shown on your device and for a particular file are decisive.

Basic Android or iPhone/iPad workflow
- Open Google Photos and select the photo.
- Tap Edit and make the changes.
- Look for Save and Save as copy (wording and availability can vary by edit and platform).
- Choose Save as copy if the unedited item must remain separate; choose Save only when changing the existing item is intended.
- Return to the library and check that the expected item or pair of items appears before deleting anything.
These steps reflect Google’s documented mobile behavior; the interface can change with app versions and device capabilities.
Do edits sync when backup is on?
Yes. Google says that when backup is turned on, edits synchronize to the Google Photos account. That statement describes synchronization, not duplication: the account receives the result of whichever save workflow you used. A Save edit can therefore update the backed-up item, while Save as copy can cause a new edited item to be backed up alongside the original.
Backup and editor saving remain separate controls. Turning backup on does not retroactively convert every edit into a copy, and turning it off does not change what Save or Save as copy means inside the editor. If an edit is not appearing on another device, check that the device is using the same Google account and that backup is enabled for the relevant folders or items.
How to reason about backup-off situations
Google’s documented guarantee is about the case in which backup is on: edits sync to the account. With backup off, do not assume that an edit has reached photos.google.com or another device. Treat the device’s local library as the current location until backup is enabled and the item shows as backed up.

Does editing reduce quality?
The editor’s Save choice and the backup-quality setting answer different questions. Editing can change image content, but the resolution and compression of the backed-up file are governed by the quality setting selected in Google Photos. Google describes the following product specifications in Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos. They are Google’s published thresholds, not results from an independent image-quality study.

Google says Storage saver was formerly called High quality. Items backed up in High quality before June 1, 2021 do not count toward storage under Google’s historical rule. That exception concerns older uploads; it should not be read as a promise that current Storage saver uploads are storage-free.
Google also describes a historical Express exception for uploads made before June 1, 2021. Because availability and treatment can change by region and date, rely on the setting and item details shown in your account.
How to check the quality and size of one photo or video
- Open the item in Google Photos.
- Open Details (the information panel or equivalent menu on your platform).
- Read the backup-quality label and the stored size or resolution.
- If you tried Storage saver and see Not eligible for Storage saver, Google is indicating that the item cannot be compressed under that setting.
This check is more reliable than judging sharpness on a phone screen. It also reveals whether a particular file followed the account’s selected setting or remained at its original size because it was not eligible for compression.

Google says an account includes up to 15 GB of storage; the cited help page does not state a publication year for that figure. If your library exceeds the available space, Google offers paid ways to add storage, but changing storage capacity does not alter the Save versus Save as copy behavior.
What changes on a computer?
The computer editor at photos.google.com also supports saving edits, but controls are not identical to mobile. In Google’s shared-album guidance, Save reflects edits to the shared album, while Save copy keeps the edited version private.
RAW files require special care on the web. Google says its computer editor converts a RAW image to JPEG. If you need the RAW data for a supported third-party editor, download the RAW file instead of assuming that the edited web result preserves the original RAW format. This RAW conversion statement is specific to Google’s computer guidance; do not generalize it to every platform or file type.

Only the owner of the original photo or video can edit it in a shared album. Saving changes to the shared album makes those edits visible to people who have access to that album.

Keep a shared-album edit private
On Android, Google advises editing in your device gallery and not saving the changes back to the shared album when you want a private version. Use Save as copy for the private edited item. Google’s computer guidance gives the equivalent choice: use Save copy instead of saving the edit to the shared album.
Before saving, decide whether the purpose is to update what everyone sees or to create a personal variation. A copy prevents your private crop or color adjustment from changing the shared presentation, but it does not remove the original from the album.
What if the photo already looks wrong?
Google’s troubleshooting page, My photos appear incorrectly, recommends checking the local file in your device’s Files app as well as the copy in Google Photos and on photos.google.com.

- If the file is correct locally but the backed-up item is wrong, first revert edits on the backed-up photo, then check the result again.
- If the file is wrong both locally and on photos.google.com, Google says the camera app may have saved it incorrectly and Google Photos cannot recover the original camera file.
- Do not treat backup as a guarantee that a file damaged before upload can be reconstructed. Backup preserves what was uploaded; it cannot recreate missing pixels or an original that the camera never saved.
A safe workflow for important photos
- Before editing, decide whether the source must remain untouched.
- Choose Save as copy when you need a separately preserved original.
- After saving, verify the library contains the expected original and edited item.
- Confirm backup is on if the edit must be available in your Google Photos account or on another device.
- Open Details on the backed-up item and check quality, resolution, and size.
- For high-resolution originals, prints, or RAW work, use Original quality where appropriate and retain a separate local copy of the source file.
- For shared albums, use Save only when participants should see the change; otherwise make a private copy.
Platform and availability caveats
Google’s help pages cover Android, iPhone/iPad, and computer workflows separately. A button shown in one interface may be absent in another, and Google explicitly notes that Save is not available for every edit. Express is also regional: if you do not see it in backup settings, Google says it may not be offered in your country or region. App updates, device support, file type, and account configuration can all affect the controls you see.
For that reason, read the actual save buttons before confirming an edit and use Details after backup. Those two checks answer the practical questions—whether the source was preserved and what quality was stored—without relying on assumptions about the app’s current interface.
