Google Photos can show an image on your phone without proving that it is safely backed up to the Google Account you intend. Before changing sync settings or deleting anything, check the backup status, destination account and included folders separately—and make an independent copy of irreplaceable photos.

What Google Photos backup settings actually control

Google describes backup as saving photos and videos to a Google Account. Sync makes backed-up items available across devices signed in to that account. Those functions do not answer every important question: you also need to know which account is selected and which items are included.

Google’s backup status guidance distinguishes states such as no backup, preparing, in progress, complete and stopped. Check the status in Photos, and inspect an individual photo’s details or backup marker when you need to confirm that specific item. An image appearing in the app by itself is not proof that its cloud copy is complete or stored in the account you expect.

  1. Open Google Photos and confirm the Google Account shown is the intended destination.
  2. Check that Backup is on and review the status indicator rather than assuming the library is current.
  3. For any especially important image, open its details or check its backed-up status individually.

On Android, review which device folders are included

On Android, Google Photos can back up selected device folders in addition to the camera folder. Folders used by messaging, editing or other apps may therefore contribute items to the Photos library if selected. Google provides controls to review individual folders and whether new folders are automatically included; these controls should not be assumed to exist in the same form on iPhone or desktop.

In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device, then review Back up device folders. Check each folder toggle and the setting for automatically backing up new folders. Google’s instructions for finding items from other apps and devices explain these Android folder controls.

Make a separate copy before changing settings

If losing a photo would matter, create a copy outside the Photos library before experimenting with backup, deletion or folder settings. Google supports downloading an individual photo or video to a device and exporting Photos data through Google Takeout. See Google’s download instructions and Takeout’s export guidance.

After downloading or exporting, open a sample of the files and confirm the copy is accessible where you intend to keep it. Google says downloading a copy does not delete the server copy. An external drive can be one destination for a local archive, but it does not prevent sync-related deletion or automatically back up new photos.

Choose the right action: hide, delete or remove cloud copies

What you want Action What happens
Keep an item out of the main gallery view Archive it It remains findable in search, albums and device folders.
Delete an item Delete it in Google Photos Deleted items remain in Trash for 30 days; after that they are permanently deleted and cannot be restored. Deletion can also remove the item from devices where Photos is installed and backup is on.
Remove a backed-up cloud copy but keep an Android local copy Turn off backup on devices where the local copy should remain, delete the cloud item through Photos on the web, then check the local file and its status. Keep backup off if you do not want the item uploaded again. Follow Google’s Android guidance for keeping device copies.
Remove all device-found items from Google Photos while retaining them on an Android device Use Undo backup on that device It removes photos and videos currently found on the device from Google Photos, leaves them on the device and turns backup off there. Its broad scope includes device-folder and Locked Folder items.

Google’s computer deletion guidance explains Trash and Archive. Local-file behavior can vary by platform, so do not assume every connected device will respond identically. For cloud removal while retaining Android files, follow the platform-specific steps rather than relying on a generic delete command.

Understand the scope of Undo backup on Android

Undo backup is broader than switching off backup for one folder. Google says it removes from Google Photos all photos and videos currently found on that Android device, while leaving those files on the device and automatically turning backup off on that device. The action also includes device-folder and Locked Folder items. Removed items leave albums, shared albums, search results and memories in Photos. Read Google’s Android deletion and Undo backup instructions carefully, and make a separate copy first if the contents are important.

Locked Folder has its own backup implications

Locked Folder items are excluded from the normal grid, memories, search and albums. Its backup behavior is separate: automatic backup depends on main backup being on, and items can also be backed up manually. A Locked Folder item without backup exists only on that device and can be lost if Google Photos is uninstalled, its app data is cleared, or the device is lost or damaged. Google’s Android Locked Folder guidance also notes that moving an item moves only the original; copies and edited versions may remain elsewhere.

Check the desktop backup change before relying on it

Google’s computer backup help states that Google Drive for desktop ended support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. That date has passed. The same guidance says stopping folder backup prevents future uploads but does not remove items already in Google Photos; if you want those removed, delete them separately at photos.google.com. See Google’s computer backup instructions.
