To silence calls that Phone by Google identifies as spam, turn on Filter spam calls—if your phone offers that control. It filters detected spam; it does not silence every number outside your contacts. Calls from schools, clinics, delivery drivers, and other unsaved callers may still come through.
Turn on spam filtering in Phone by Google

Open the Phone by Google app.

Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings > Caller ID and spam.

Turn on See caller ID and spam.

If you see it, turn on Filter spam calls to have calls identified as spam sent directly to filtering. Some of these steps require Android 6.0 or later.

Google’s help page describes the setting as “Use caller ID and spam protection.” Menu labels and available controls can vary by device. If Filter spam calls is missing, your device may use automatic Call Screen, where spam autoblocking is handled as one of the screening options. Pixel settings also vary by model, so check the options on your own device rather than relying on a universal Pixel menu path. Google Phone app Help: Use caller ID and spam protection.

What filtering changes—and what it does not
Spam filtering and blocking unknown or private numbers are separate controls. Google’s Android guidance treats blocking unknown or private numbers separately and says that feature does not affect calls from numbers that are not in your contacts. Spam filtering instead acts on calls the system identifies as spam. It is not a rule to silence all unsaved callers, and it does not guarantee that every contact will ring. When a call is filtered, Google says: “You don’t get missed call or voicemail notifications, but filtered calls are in your call history and you can check your voicemail.” That means an expected call could be filtered if it is mistakenly classified; check the call history and voicemail if you think a call is missing. Review a filtered call or correct a mistake

Open the Phone app’s call history to review filtered calls.

Check voicemail if you are waiting for a message; filtered calls do not generate voicemail notifications.

If a call was incorrectly marked as spam, use the call’s Not spam control in the app to report the mistake.
Google says spam calls cannot be completely eliminated, so the filter should be treated as a way to manage calls identified as spam, not a guarantee that unwanted calls will stop. Android: How to Stop and Block Spam or Unwanted Calls.

Google’s Play listing says automatic Call Screen is US-only and English-only, while manual screening has broader but still limited country and language availability. Check the listing and your device’s settings for current availability. Call Screen is distinct from the spam-filter toggle: it screens unknown callers on supported devices, while the basic filter acts on calls identified as spam. Phone by Google on Google Play.

What caller ID and spam protection shares with Google
Google says Phone may send call information to Google to identify callers or determine whether a number is spam when a number outside your contacts calls you or when you call one. Google also says it does not get phone numbers from your contact list. This describes Google’s account of the data flow; it is not an independent privacy audit. At the Android platform level, Android 11 and later support access to carrier verdict data for call-screening and spam apps through supported APIs. Android’s developer documentation includes STIR/SHAKEN verification status among the available data. That does not mean every Android phone, carrier, or screening app receives identical data.
