Android now lets you transfer passwords and passkeys directly between supported password managers, without downloading an export file. To move passkeys out of Google Password Manager, start the import-from-another-app flow in the manager you’re moving to, then approve the export in Google Password Manager.

Which password managers can use Android’s transfer flow?

Google announced the feature on September 10, 2026. Google lists Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane as managers where the transfer experience is available. The source and destination apps must support the flow, so a listed manager does not guarantee that every app version or credential combination will work. Google says the feature is compatible with Android 8 and later.

This is a manager-to-manager transfer, not the same as exporting a password CSV. Google’s documented transfer flow can move passkeys as well as passwords; the separate CSV route is for passwords.

How to move passkeys out of Google Password Manager

  1. Open the destination manager. Choose its option to import passwords or credentials from another app. Google documents starting the transfer in the destination manager. See Google’s Android import and export instructions.
  2. Select Google Password Manager as the source. If prompted, verify your identity, choose the Google Account, and select the credentials you want to transfer.
  3. Approve the export in Google Password Manager. When the Google Password Manager screen opens, select Export and complete any device authentication request. Export requires a screen lock.
  4. Complete any passkey unlock prompt. Google says using a passkey on a new device may require the old device’s screen lock or your Google Password Manager PIN. Importing a passkey from another manager into Google Password Manager may ask for that manager’s recovery key.
  5. Check the destination vault before relying on it. Confirm that important credentials appear in the new manager and that you can use them. Keep access to the old manager and its recovery methods until you have checked the accounts you depend on.

Google warns that an import can fail if no passwords are found or the data is broken. An unsuccessful or incomplete transfer is a reason to keep using the source manager while you troubleshoot, rather than assuming every passkey moved.

How to move credentials into Google Password Manager

  1. Open Google Password Manager settings and choose Import passwords and passkeys.
  2. Select the source manager and authenticate when prompted.
  3. Review and authorize the export in the source manager, then follow the remaining prompts to complete the transfer.

Google advises importing only from a third-party manager you trust. For the current screens and prompts, use Google’s Android instructions.

What happens to the credentials during transfer?

Android describes this as a same-device exchange between credential providers using FIDO Credential Exchange Format (CXF). Android coordinates the exchange and returns the user to the source provider to select, review, and authorize the transfer. The Android Developers documentation says the framework does not expose raw credentials to Android or unauthenticated apps. That describes the framework’s design; it is not a guarantee that every provider, device, app version, or transfer is risk-free. See Android’s credential transfer documentation.

Passkeys use public-key cryptography and are bound to the website or app for which they were created. Google describes them as phishing resistant. Google also says Google Password Manager encrypts passkey secrets end-to-end, so only the user can access and use them even though they are backed up to Google’s servers. These protections do not remove the need to verify that the destination manager supports the credentials you need.

When a CSV is not the right way to move passkeys

A password CSV is a separate export and import route. Google’s instructions distinguish importing passwords from transferring passwords and passkeys through a password-manager flow. A CSV left on a device can be opened by anyone with access to that device, according to Google. If you use the CSV route for passwords, remove the file securely once the import is complete; do not expect it to carry passkeys.

Which passkeys may not be in Google Password Manager?

A transfer can only move credentials available to the source manager. Google distinguishes syncable Google Password Manager passkeys from passkeys held in device-local stores. Windows Hello passkeys are not synchronized or backed up. Google says Chrome-profile passkeys on macOS cannot be recovered if the computer is lost or the Chrome profile is deleted. Passkeys stored on security keys are not backed up and cannot be recovered if a key is lost or reset. See Google’s passkey management guidance.

These cases are not reasons to reset or discard a device or key before checking where a passkey is stored. If an account is important, verify that you can sign in with its intended recovery method before removing the old credential or device.

What “in one afternoon” can—and cannot—mean

Google says the authorized transfer itself takes a few seconds, but that does not establish the total time for an individual migration. The time can also include finding the right setting, authenticating, handling prompts, and checking accounts. Treat any one-afternoon duration as that person’s experience, not a promised completion time for every device, manager, or vault.
