For most people, the right Google One plan is the smallest tier that covers expected use across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. A standard Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across those services. If that free allowance still has room, paying for Google One adds no necessary capacity; if you are approaching the limit, start by measuring actual use rather than choosing the largest plan.
On the US-facing Google One page checked on October 13, 2026, Basic provides 100 GB for $1.99 per month, Google AI Plus provides 2 TB for $9.99 per month, and Google AI Pro provides 5 TB for $19.99 per month. Those are displayed US-dollar prices, not a worldwide or permanent price list. Your billing country, account eligibility and current offer can change the price and benefits, so verify the plan shown after signing in.
What Google One changes
Google One is a paid membership that adds storage to the total attached to your existing Google Account. The added capacity is shared by Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos rather than being three separate quotas. Google explains how the free allowance and paid capacity combine in its storage overview.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to upgrade. A large Photos library, years of Gmail attachments or Drive files can consume the same pool. Buying a plan for one service does not create an isolated reserve for that service. Conversely, deleting or moving data from any one of the three services can reduce the total used.

The following figures are what the US-facing Google One plans page displayed when checked on October 13, 2026. Google’s help documentation lists additional capacities and regional variations, so treat “not stated” as information not established for that tier in the displayed US offer.

Google’s help page says existing members can receive 5 TB and larger standard upgrades, while AI-plan capacity and feature availability vary by location. A tier appearing in help documentation is therefore not a guarantee that every account can buy it today.
Start with your real storage requirement
Check the combined total
Open your Google One storage view while signed in and note the total used by Drive, Gmail and Photos. Look at the service breakdown, then identify unusually large items such as videos, device backups, old email attachments or shared files that you own. The objective is a current number, not a guess based on how many files you have.

Allow for near-term growth
Estimate what you will add before the next time you expect to reassess the plan. A person whose account uses 82 GB today has little practical headroom on a 100 GB plan if they continue uploading photos every week. Someone using 12 GB with no major archive can remain on the free allowance. These examples are decision math, not Google usage averages.
Include every person who will use the pool
For a household, add the likely use of each member before selecting a capacity. A 100 GB plan that works for one person may be quickly exhausted when several people upload phone photos. Google One family sharing does not merge everyone’s files into a common, visible folder; it combines the storage entitlement while keeping files private unless deliberately shared.
When Basic is the sensible choice
Basic is the straightforward storage upgrade. At the displayed US price of $1.99 per month, it supplies 100 GB for Drive, Gmail and Photos and can be shared with up to five family members when the account and country meet Google’s requirements. It is a good fit when your measured total is above 15 GB but comfortably below 100 GB, or when a household needs a modest shared buffer.

Do not select Basic solely because it is the cheapest paid option if your current use is already close to 100 GB. Reaching the cap can interrupt uploads and create pressure to delete files immediately. Conversely, paying for an AI plan only to obtain more storage may be poor value when a standard 200 GB or other eligible tier meets the forecast.
When Google AI Plus earns its higher price
Google AI Plus supplies 2 TB and bundles digital features such as access to the Gemini app and Google Flow on the reviewed plan page. The exact features, usage limits and availability are governed by Google’s terms and can vary by location or account.
Choose AI Plus when both parts of the bundle matter: your expected storage is materially above 100 GB, and you have a concrete use for the included AI or creative tools. Examples might include regularly using the Gemini app for permitted work or experimenting with Flow when it is available to your account. Storage alone does not make the AI features necessary; they are an optional reason to pay the difference.

Before subscribing, open the current plan description and check which features are enabled in your country. A feature named on a general page may have regional, age, language, rollout or usage restrictions. Treat the advertised bundle as conditional on those terms rather than as an unlimited entitlement.
When Google AI Pro is justified
Google AI Pro raises the included capacity to 5 TB and adds the further AI and Google-service benefits listed on the plan page. At the displayed US price of $19.99 per month, it costs twice the shown AI Plus price, so the decision should be based on both capacity and benefits.
AI Pro is aimed at accounts with genuinely large archives, multiple heavy users or a sustained need for the higher-tier services. If your forecast fits under 2 TB and you would not use the extra benefits, AI Plus or a standard storage tier is the more economical direction. If you need more than 2 TB but do not care about AI features, check whether your account is eligible for a larger standard storage upgrade instead of assuming Pro is the only route.

Family sharing: capacity without shared files
How the shared pool works
Google says a plan manager can share a Google One plan with up to five family members. Each person has personal storage that is consumed first; once that personal amount is used, the member draws from the shared pool. Members do not automatically see one another’s Drive files, Gmail or Photos. A file remains private unless its owner shares it directly.
Eligibility rules
Google’s family-sharing guidance requires each participant to have a personal Google Account, to be in the same country as the family manager and to belong to only one family group. Someone who recently left another family group may have to wait before joining a new one. These rules can prevent an otherwise eligible-looking invitation from working.
The Lite exception
The 30 GB Lite tier is for one member and does not support family sharing. If you downgrade from a 100 GB-or-higher plan to Lite while sharing, Google says sharing is disabled automatically. Check the effect on every member before confirming that downgrade.

The prices in the comparison table are observations of a US-facing page, not universal guarantees. Google changes offers and may display different currencies, taxes, promotions or capacities according to billing location. The reviewed plan page advertises annual billing with savings of up to 16%, but the actual saving depends on the plan and offer shown at checkout; verify the specific annual amount before choosing it.
Google’s sign-up help page lists the 30 GB Lite option only in selected countries or regions and notes that available capacities and AI-plan features vary by location. Because the reviewed sources do not provide a complete worldwide price table, do not convert the US figures into a recommendation for another market without checking the local page.
A practical decision process
- Record current use. Check the combined Drive, Gmail and Photos total and its service-by-service breakdown.
- Forecast the next period. Add likely photo, video, email and Drive growth rather than relying on today’s free space.
- Test the free option. If the forecast remains within 15 GB, stay on the standard account and reassess when your habits change.
- Choose the smallest eligible capacity above the forecast. Consider Basic at 100 GB, an available 200 GB or other standard tier, or a larger option when the arithmetic requires it.
- Model the household. Add each family member’s expected use and confirm that the selected tier permits sharing in your country.
- Price the benefits separately in your mind. For AI Plus or Pro, decide whether the included AI and Google-service features have value independent of storage.
- Verify the checkout offer. Confirm currency, recurring monthly or annual billing, taxes if shown, feature availability and the cancellation or downgrade consequence before paying.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing account storage with device storage: Google One adds cloud capacity; it does not increase a phone’s internal storage.
- Assuming Gmail has a separate allowance: Drive, Gmail and Photos draw from the same total.
- Buying an AI plan for storage alone: Compare against every standard tier available to your account first.
- Assuming family members can browse one another’s files: Sharing the plan does not share file access.
- Ignoring country restrictions: Family membership, Lite availability, AI features and prices can all depend on location.
- Downgrading without checking usage: If your stored data exceeds the new limit, uploads and other storage-dependent activity can be affected; reduce usage or select a capacity that covers it before downgrading.
- Treating a displayed promotion as permanent: Monthly prices and annual savings can change, so retain the terms shown at purchase rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Which plan should you pick?
Pick no paid plan if your combined use and near-term growth fit within the included 15 GB. Pick Basic when you need a low-cost 100 GB buffer and, if applicable, a family pool. Investigate a 200 GB or other standard tier when it is available locally and your storage forecast falls between Basic and 2 TB. Pick AI Plus when 2 TB is useful and its bundled AI features justify the higher price. Pick AI Pro only when the 5 TB capacity or its additional benefits addresses a real requirement. In every case, confirm the offer for your billing country immediately before subscribing.
