To make a working React Google sign-in or authorization flow production-ready, keep browser code and server credentials separate: React can start the Google Identity Services (GIS) flow, but a confidential client secret, authorization-code exchange, and any refresh-token storage belong on your backend. First decide whether you need user sign-in only or access to Google APIs; that choice determines the flow and the server work.
Choose the flow that matches what your app does
Signing a user in and authorizing your app to call Google APIs are related but distinct jobs. Google’s overview of user authorization describes that distinction. For sign-in, assess whether Sign in with Google and an ID token meet your needs. For API access, use Google Identity Services authorization and request the required API scopes.
Sign-in only
If the app only needs to identify the user, assess the Sign in with Google option using the identity scopes openid, email, and profile. Do not request Google API permissions just because the user is signing in.
Google API access
For authorization to call Google APIs, Google recommends the authorization-code model: “Authorization code flow is recommended because it provides a more secure flow.” The browser obtains a temporary code, and the backend exchanges it with Google for tokens. This keeps token exchange and confidential client authentication on the server. It can also support offline work when refresh tokens are issued and stored securely by the backend.

| Model | Where tokens are handled | Backend and offline access | User presence for token requests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authorization code | The backend exchanges the code and handles tokens, avoiding in-browser token handling risks. | Backend is required for code exchange; refresh tokens can support offline access when securely stored server-side. | Can support offline actions through refresh tokens. |
| Implicit | Access tokens are returned to browser code. | Browser-only; it does not provide the recommended server-side code-exchange pattern. | User must be present for token requests. |
These distinctions follow Google’s flow comparison. Google’s code-model guide documents popup and redirect user experiences. In popup mode, the GIS callback receives a code and sends it to your backend. In redirect mode, Google sends the code to your backend authorization endpoint. Either way, the backend validates and exchanges the code at Google’s token endpoint. Google documents popup code flow as a usability-and-security balance; it does not prescribe a React-specific architecture or framework integration.
Separate production configuration from development
Create a production Google Cloud project and web OAuth client separate from test configuration. Put only production origins and redirect URIs on the production client; keep localhost, staging, and pre-release environments on the test configuration. Google’s production-readiness guidance recommends separate test and production projects.

- Register the exact production JavaScript origins and redirect URIs the app uses.
- Use HTTPS outside localhost. Google documents localhost exceptions for development, not as a production transport.
- Make each redirect URI match exactly, including scheme, capitalization, and trailing slash.
- Use domains the application owns or is authorized to use.
Google’s OAuth policies and web-server flow documentation cover these requirements. A mismatch between the URI in a request and the registered URI can prevent the authorization flow from completing.

Keep the secret and token lifecycle on the backend
The OAuth client ID identifies the configured browser application; it is not the confidential credential. The client secret must never be placed in the React bundle, a browser-accessible configuration file, or a public source repository. Anything delivered to a browser can be inspected. Google’s GIS overview and web-server flow guide distinguish browser and server responsibilities.

- React: Start the GIS authorization flow using the public client ID and the appropriate user experience.
- Backend: Receive the temporary authorization code and exchange it with Google using server-side credentials.
- Backend: If offline access is required and a refresh token is issued, store it in secure server-side storage and use it for server-side token renewal.
- React: Do not receive or persist the client secret or a refresh token.
Store confidential credentials somewhere only the application can access. Google’s OAuth best practices names Secret Manager as an example. Protect access to that storage, and plan for refresh tokens to expire or be revoked: backend logic should detect unusable credentials and require the user to authorize again.
Request only the permissions a feature needs
Ask for the smallest set of scopes needed, preferably when the user chooses a feature that requires them. A user can grant only some requested scopes, so check what was actually granted before enabling the related feature. If a required scope is missing, explain why it is needed and request it again only when the user signals intent to use that feature. Google’s OAuth policies set expectations for scope minimization and consent.

Handle denial and later revocation as ordinary application states rather than assuming consent will remain available. The GIS JavaScript API reference documents browser-side authorization behavior; the backend must also handle expired or revoked credentials when it makes API requests.

Before launch, make sure the application has a publicly accessible homepage on a verified domain that the app owns. Google says the homepage should describe the application and link to its privacy policy and terms of service. Keep test servers and pre-release environments off production OAuth clients.
Best Value
- Includes access code
- Confirm the production project and web client are separate from development configuration.
- Verify the public homepage, app description, privacy policy, and terms of service are accessible.
- Review each requested scope and the APIs that use it.
- Check whether selected sensitive or restricted scopes require additional verification; the applicable requirements depend on the scopes and APIs, so approval should not be assumed.
Google’s production-readiness checklist and OAuth policies describe these expectations. Policy details and Cloud Console labels can change, so check Google’s current documentation and console settings while configuring the production project.
