First check whether Google itself will not load or whether Chrome’s address bar is searching with the wrong provider. Those are different problems: a page-loading failure calls for connection and browser troubleshooting, while an unexpected address-bar provider is usually a search-engine setting or management issue.

First identify what is not working

Open Google using its usual address and reload the page. Then try another familiar website. This quick comparison helps separate a Google-specific problem from a broader connection or Chrome issue.

  • Several websites will not load: Check that your computer is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and that your existing modem or router is operating. On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in page or connection portal.
  • Only Google will not load: The cause may involve the site, your Chrome profile, or a browser setting. Check the address and note any error message Chrome displays.
  • Google loads, but address-bar searches go elsewhere: Check Chrome’s default search engine rather than treating this as a page-loading failure.

Chrome error codes can narrow down what to check, but do not prove a single cause. For example, ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED indicates the device is not connected; ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED points to a hostname or address-resolution problem; and ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means the connection took too long. Google lists connection, device settings or software, browser conditions, and site downtime as possible causes of loading errors in its Chrome page-loading troubleshooting guide.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Check the address and connection. Confirm you entered Google’s address correctly, reload, and try another website. If multiple sites fail, restore the computer’s network connection or complete any public Wi-Fi sign-in.
  2. Update Chrome. In Chrome, open Help → About Google Chrome. Install an available update and relaunch the browser. Google recommends using an up-to-date browser for Search; Chrome is among the supported browsers listed in Google Search’s browser requirements.
  3. Fully restart Chrome. If Chrome says it is current, quit the browser completely, reopen it, and try Google again.
  4. Test in Incognito. Open an Incognito window and try the page there. If it works in Incognito but not in your regular window, extensions or data in the regular profile are more likely to be involved.
  5. Check extensions. In the regular Chrome window, disable all extensions and test again. If that fixes the problem, turn extensions back on one at a time until the issue returns. Remove or leave disabled the extension responsible, especially if it changes settings you do not want changed. Google notes that extensions can affect settings such as the search engine, homepage, new-tab page, and start page in its Chrome extension troubleshooting guidance.
  6. Clear relevant browsing data. If Incognito works but your regular window does not, clear cached files and cookies or site data, then retry. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites or remove saved site state. Chrome’s data-clearing controls are in Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data; Google also includes deleting browsing data in its loading-error steps.
  7. Check security software and available memory. If the earlier steps do not help, Google’s loading guidance also recommends checking whether security software is interfering and freeing memory by closing unneeded tabs or apps.

Change the address-bar search engine back to Google

If Google’s website opens but searches entered in Chrome’s address bar use another provider, change Chrome’s default search engine:

  1. Open Chrome → Settings → Search engine.
  2. Select Change beside the search-engine setting.
  3. Choose Google, if it is available.

Chrome’s default provider can vary by country, and some users may be asked to choose one. On a work or school computer, an administrator may manage the setting, so you may not be able to change it yourself. See Google’s instructions for setting the default search engine on a computer. The address bar can search the web, but some Chrome features depend on whether the selected provider supports them, as described in Google’s address-bar guidance.

Investigate redirects or a search engine that keeps changing

If Chrome switches providers again without your permission, or searches redirect to unfamiliar pages, treat that as a separate warning sign rather than just a loading problem. Google says unexpected search-engine changes may indicate malware. Review extensions you recently added and unfamiliar programs installed on the computer; follow Google’s unwanted software and extension guidance. A paid cleanup tool is not a necessary first step.

If Google still does not work

Try the same page in another browser. If it fails there too, the issue may be with the connection or website rather than Chrome. If it works elsewhere, use Google’s Chrome loading-error help or Chrome’s feedback options. Google lists uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome as a later troubleshooting option, after the simpler checks.
