The Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) is a compact, outlet-powered smart speaker with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Google Cast and Google Assistant features; Google also lists it as compatible with Gemini for Home, with limitations on older devices. Google’s documentation establishes its dimensions, hardware and setup requirements, but not how it sounds in a real room or how it compares in performance with other speakers. Whether it suits you depends on your power and network setup, desired placement, and the assistant features available to your account.
What is the Nest Mini (2nd gen)?
Google calls this model the Google Nest Mini (2nd gen). It is the second-generation version of the small speaker Google first sold as the Google Home Mini. One visible way to distinguish the generations is the back: Google says the second-generation Nest Mini has a screw slot for wall mounting, while the first-generation Google Home Mini does not. What do you get in the hardware?
Google lists a 98 mm diameter, 42 mm height and 181 g device weight. The speaker has a 1.5 m power cable and a listed 15 W power requirement. It has no battery, so it needs a wall outlet where you use it; it is not a portable speaker for use away from power.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. A driver size and microphone count do not establish sound quality, loudness, voice recognition accuracy or performance in a particular room. Google lists the fabric top as made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and the external enclosure as using at least 35% post-consumer recycled plastic; these are Google’s material claims, not independent lifecycle assessments.

Is the Nest Mini worth buying?
It may fit if you want a small, stationary speaker for a room with both Wi-Fi coverage and an available outlet, and you want Google’s smart-speaker and casting ecosystem. Its documented size and wall-mount slot offer flexible placement, but it still needs power and a network connection.
The available specifications cannot settle whether it is worth buying for sound quality, microphone performance, reliability or value against competing speakers. Those judgments require firsthand listening and testing or credible independent measurements, and a value verdict also depends on the price and availability in your country. Google’s listed colors are Chalk, Charcoal, Coral and Sky, but that does not mean every color is sold in every market.

What changed from the Google Home Mini?
The product’s generation name changed from Google Home Mini to Google Nest Mini (2nd gen). The clearest physical difference established in Google’s documentation is the screw slot on the newer model’s back, which supports wall mounting. Google’s specifications also document this model’s audio, microphone and wireless hardware, but those figures alone do not prove a real-world performance improvement over the earlier speaker.

Google’s Android setup instructions require the latest Google Home app, a Google Account, an Android phone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later, Bluetooth turned on, an internet connection and a secure wireless network. Google says WPA-2 Enterprise does not work for this Android setup route. These are Android-specific instructions; they should not be treated as the requirements for iOS. - Install or update the Google Home app, and check that your phone or tablet meets the Android requirements.
- Turn on Bluetooth and connect the device to the internet and a secure Wi-Fi network that is not WPA-2 Enterprise.
- Plug the Nest Mini into a wall outlet. If it was previously used, factory-reset it before continuing.
- Use the Google Home app to follow the on-screen setup prompts.
Plan for Wi-Fi coverage where the speaker will sit, as well as access to an outlet. Google lists Wi-Fi as required and does not specify a battery-powered mode.
Can you mount the Nest Mini on a wall?
Yes. Google says, “Your Google Nest Mini can be hung on a wall using the screw slot on the back of the device.” The mounting instructions call for a #8 pan-head screw with a flat top and bottom and rounded edges, plus a wall anchor if the wall material requires one. Google does not include the screw or anchor with the speaker. See Google’s wall-mount instructions.

- Choose a location near a power outlet and within Wi-Fi range.
- Test the connection at the intended location before attaching the speaker.
- Use a screwdriver or a drill fitted with a screwdriver bit, and select an appropriate anchor for the wall material if needed.
Does it support Gemini for Home?
Google’s Gemini for Home compatibility information lists Nest Mini (2nd gen) among supported speakers and displays. Google also says older speaker and display devices support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Availability of particular features can depend on current software, firmware, account and regional rollout conditions, so check Google’s Gemini for Home guidance before relying on a specific capability.
