Not necessarily. Google’s documentation shows that the Gemini web app and Gemini API offer different image-generation workflows, model choices, and usage limits. It does not establish that every Google model is deliberately downgraded on the web—or that the same model produces lower-quality results in a browser than through the API. If by “nanobanna” you mean Nano Banana, that is Google’s name for a family of image models, not a label for all Google models.
What “nerfed on the web” could mean
“Nerfed” can describe several different frustrations: fewer model choices, stricter usage limits, missing features, or outputs that seem worse. Those are not interchangeable. A web app can expose a different model or impose a quota without changing the underlying model’s output quality.
Google’s documentation describes distinct model variants and access routes, but does not provide a controlled comparison showing that a named model performs worse in Gemini Apps than through the API. Without a specific task, model version, account, and comparison, the broad claim that all Google models are nerfed on the web is not established.

Nano Banana is one image-model family, not all Google models
Google uses Nano Banana for Gemini’s image-generation capability. Its model catalog lists several image variants alongside other Gemini models, so an experience with Nano Banana cannot by itself establish how every Google model behaves. See Google’s Gemini API model catalog.

What the named image variants are for
Google describes Nano Banana 2.1 as a speed- and cost-efficient workhorse, with improvements including text rendering and consistency across multiple editing turns. Nano Banana 2 is described as the previous high-efficiency workhorse. Nano Banana 2 Lite is positioned for speed and cost, while Nano Banana Pro is the premium option for complex visual tasks. The original Nano Banana is a legacy model. These are Google’s characterizations, not independent benchmark results. The image-generation guide contains the current model-specific details and may change as models are updated.
Why Gemini Apps and the API can feel different
Gemini Apps and the Gemini API are separate ways to use Google’s models, with different documented choices and controls. For image requests on a computer, Google says Gemini Apps uses Nano Banana 2 Lite when the selected chat model is Flash-Lite, and Nano Banana 2 when it is Flash or Pro. Paid subscribers can redo eligible images with Nano Banana Pro after generating them with Nano Banana 2 or Lite; that redo is unavailable once the daily Nano Banana 2 quota has been reached. Feature availability can also depend on supported countries and languages. Details are in Google’s Gemini Apps image-generation help.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
By contrast, the API guide names image-model endpoints and documents differences in capabilities. For example, some variants support 1K, 2K, and 4K image generation, while Lite is limited to 1K; grounding options also vary by model. Generated images include SynthID watermarking. These details describe documented options, not proof that an API result is inherently better than a web-app result.
Limits and access can change the experience
Google says Gemini Apps limits can vary with demand, plan, prompt and file complexity, and the selected feature. Its help page also says free users may encounter restrictions before paid users when capacity changes. The U.S.-oriented plan information distinguishes access and usage limits, and lists Nano Banana 2 image generation across plans while Nano Banana Pro image redo is for paid plans. Because the limits and plan terms can change, check the live Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page for your account and location rather than treating a quota or feature as universal.

- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]

- The selected chat model may route an image request to a different Nano Banana variant.
- You may have reached an app quota or be subject to capacity limits.
- A feature, such as Pro image redo, may require a paid plan.
- Availability can vary by country, language, account type, or rollout.
Any of these can make the web experience feel more restricted, but none demonstrates that Google secretly lowers the quality of the same model in the browser.
How to tell whether a model is actually worse for your task
A fair comparison needs to hold as many variables constant as the products allow. If the model or settings differ, you are comparing product experiences—not isolating whether the model itself is “nerfed.”
- Record the route and account. Note whether you used Gemini Apps, Google AI Studio, or the Gemini API, along with your plan and account type.
- Record the model and version. Use the same named model wherever both surfaces make it available, and note the date. If one surface does not expose the same version, mark that difference instead of treating the results as a model-only test.
- Keep the task inputs aligned. Reuse the prompt, reference images, requested resolution, and number of editing turns. Note whether grounding is enabled.
- Compare outcomes that matter to you. Assess visual quality, readable text, fidelity to references, consistency across edits, latency, and how much usable quota you have.
- Repeat when possible. A single output can vary. Record more than one run and avoid drawing a broad conclusion from one prompt or one account state.
This method can establish which route works better for a particular task and setup. It cannot support a universal claim about every Google model unless the tested models, versions, and conditions justify that scope.

Google documents multiple Nano Banana variants, different Gemini Apps and API workflows, and plan- or capacity-dependent access. That makes a constrained web experience plausible. The documentation does not establish that every Google model is nerfed online or provide a controlled web-versus-API quality result. To assess a particular complaint, the useful details are the exact task, model, surface, account and plan, location, and date—not just the word “web.”
