Short answer: Google Messages has the more extensively documented set of controls for spam detection, reporting and unsubscribing from eligible promotional business messages. Samsung Messages documents manual number blocking, while Samsung’s more advanced malicious-message and intelligence filters are described only for certain Galaxy devices in South Korea. Neither app can be declared more accurate from the available evidence, and features depend on your country, phone, software version and message type.
Google Messages and Samsung Messages at a glance
The two apps address unwanted messages in different ways. Google Messages combines automatic detection, user reporting and an unsubscribe workflow for some business conversations. Samsung Messages’ U.S. support documentation focuses on blocking numbers and spam manually. A Samsung Korea support article describes additional filters on supported Galaxy devices, but that guidance is regional and does not establish a universal Samsung feature.

Automatic spam protection
Google says spam protection is turned on automatically where the feature is available. Its documented system can use machine-learning models that run on the device and can check URLs in messages with Google to identify malicious links. Google also notes that availability can differ by device, country and other conditions. The feature is not a guarantee that every unwanted text will be intercepted.

To inspect the setting on an Android phone:
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or initials.
- Select Messages settings.
- Open Protection & safety.
- Review Spam protection. Where the control is offered, you can turn it off.
If Protection & safety or the spam setting is absent, the feature may not be supported for your device, account, country or current app build. An absent switch does not prove that filtering is disabled; it means Google is not exposing that control in that configuration.
What happens when you report a conversation
In Google Messages, reporting spam is stronger than simply dismissing a notification. Google says a report blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. Reporting is optional: you can block a sender without submitting a spam report if you do not want to share the additional information.
Google’s reporting documentation says a report can include the sender’s number and up to the last 10 incoming messages. It may also include message timestamps and RCS identifiers. A separate spam-reporting conversation can send the number and the latest text to your mobile carrier. These details are used to improve spam detection and carrier handling, so reporting has a data-sharing consequence beyond the local block.
Use reporting when the message is genuinely unwanted or deceptive. For a legitimate message from someone you know, use a normal block or another conversation-level control instead of labeling it spam, because a spam report can affect future filtering and the information sent to Google or the carrier.
Stopping promotional texts in Google Messages
Unsubscribe is not the same as blocking
Google Messages can show an Unsubscribe option for eligible business conversations. Google documents this for RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom. It also documents an SMS/MMS unsubscribe flow in the United States for messages from short codes and alphanumeric senders.

When the option is available, open the business conversation and choose Unsubscribe from the conversation menu or the prompt shown in the thread. For the supported SMS flow, Google sends a STOP message to facilitate the request. The business may still send essential messages that you requested, such as a delivery update, account notice or confirmation. The control is therefore designed to stop non-essential promotional traffic, not every future message from that organization.
Google explicitly distinguishes unsubscribing from blocking. Unsubscribe does not itself block the sender, and it does not remove the conversation from your inbox. If the sender continues with unwanted messages, use the conversation’s block or report-spam action. That moves the thread to Spam & blocked and prevents the sender from appearing as a normal conversation.

Why the unsubscribe option may not appear
- The sender may not use an eligible RCS for Business identity, U.S. short code or U.S. alphanumeric sender.
- Your country may not be one of the documented supported locations.
- The message may be a normal person-to-person SMS/MMS rather than a qualifying business message.
- The phone may not currently have the required RCS or app support.
- The message may be considered an essential, requested communication rather than a non-essential promotion.
Do not treat the absence of Unsubscribe as evidence that Google Messages cannot stop the sender. Blocking and reporting remain separate controls, and your carrier may provide additional filtering tools.
Google Messages privacy and encryption details
Google’s explanation of spam detection is more specific than a simple claim that the service “reads your texts.” It describes several mechanisms with different scopes:
- On-device models: Some detection can occur on the phone using machine-learning models.
- URL verification: URLs in messages may be uploaded to Google so the links can be checked for malicious behavior.
- Ephemeral processing: Google says spam detection may temporarily process unencrypted message content and use signals to improve its detection models.
- RCS encryption: Google states that RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS is enabled.
Those statements should not be collapsed into “all messages are uploaded” or “all messages are encrypted.” RCS encryption applies when the conversation is using RCS; it is not a blanket description of every SMS or MMS conversation. Likewise, the documented URL checks and possible temporary processing do not establish that Google stores the full contents of every message for spam screening. How Samsung Messages handles unwanted texts
Blocking a number in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s U.S. support instructions use a manual blocking path:
- Open Messages.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Block numbers and spam.
- Select Block numbers, then add the number or choose it from your messages or contacts.
Menu labels and their location can differ by Galaxy model, carrier firmware and software version. If the exact path is not present, search the Messages settings for “block,” “spam” or “numbers,” and check whether your carrier has replaced Samsung’s messaging app with another default.
Samsung’s U.S. guidance establishes number blocking, but the reviewed material does not document a Samsung equivalent to Google’s business-message unsubscribe workflow. That does not prove that no carrier or regional Samsung configuration can offer one; it means you should not expect the same control simply because both apps support texting.
Samsung’s regional malicious-message and intelligence filters
A Samsung Korea support article dated February 28, 2025 describes two additional protections on some Galaxy devices: malicious-message blocking and an optional intelligence-based filter. The article ties support to the device’s operating system and warns that the intelligence filter can incorrectly classify legitimate messages.
This is important when comparing the apps. The Korean documentation is evidence of a regional, device-dependent Samsung implementation, not proof that every Galaxy phone or every country has the same AI filter. The warning about false positives also means that aggressive filtering should be reviewed occasionally. A missing one-time code, appointment reminder or delivery notice may be a filtering error rather than a failure by the sender. If an important message disappears, inspect blocked or spam folders and temporarily disable the optional filter only long enough to identify the cause.
Which app is better for promotional texts?
For readers whose main problem is recurring business promotions, Google Messages has the clearer documented workflow because it separates three actions: automatic detection, an eligible unsubscribe request and a full block/report. Samsung’s documented U.S. path is primarily a manual block, and its advanced filter documentation is regional.

In practical terms, Google Messages is the better-documented choice for managing eligible promotional business conversations. That is a documentation and workflow conclusion, not a claim that Google catches more spam in laboratory testing.

Google gives users a relatively detailed explanation of what can happen when spam detection or reporting is used. Automatic detection can involve on-device models, URL checks and possible temporary processing of unencrypted content. A manual report can include the phone number, up to 10 incoming messages, timestamps and RCS identifiers, with a separate report potentially sending the number and latest text to the carrier.

Troubleshooting unwanted messages
The Google spam setting is missing
- Confirm that Google Messages is the active default SMS app.
- Update the app through your normal Android app-update channel.
- Reopen Profile photo or initials > Messages settings > Protection & safety.
- If the option still does not appear, assume the feature is unavailable for that device, country or account rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
The unsubscribe control is missing
Check the sender type and region first. The documented control is limited to eligible RCS for Business messages and specific SMS/MMS sender categories. A regular promotional SMS from a long phone number, a person-to-person message and an essential requested notice may not qualify. Use block/report when the message is unwanted, and contact the business through a trusted channel if you need to change marketing consent on the account itself.
Messages continue after unsubscribing
Unsubscribe is not a block. Essential requested communications may continue, and a business may need time to process the request. If later messages are unwanted, block or report the conversation. Do not assume that deleting the thread changes the sender’s status; deletion and blocking are separate actions.
A legitimate message was filtered
Check Spam & blocked in Google Messages or the blocked/spam area available in your Samsung configuration. For Samsung’s optional intelligence filter, remember Samsung’s warning that legitimate messages can be misclassified. Add trusted senders to your contacts where your phone supports that behavior, and review filtering settings before disabling protection entirely.

The Samsung blocking menu is different
Samsung’s documented path is for U.S. Galaxy software and can vary by model and version. Look under the Messages app’s settings for a blocking or spam section. If Samsung Messages is no longer the default app, perform the block in the app that currently receives your SMS and MMS messages; blocking in an unused app will not protect the active inbox.
U.S. Samsung Messages end-of-service caveat
An Associated Press report dated April 6, 2026 said Samsung’s U.S. end-of-service announcement set discontinuation of Samsung Messages for July 2026 and directed affected users to switch to Google Messages. The report said the change was U.S.-specific and did not apply outside the United States. Because the underlying Samsung announcement was not included with that report, treat the date as a reported U.S. timeline rather than a worldwide product-status statement.
If you are in the United States, open Samsung Messages and look for an in-app notice, then check Samsung’s current regional support information before planning a switch. Export or preserve important conversations according to your phone’s available backup tools, verify that your phone number and RCS settings work in the replacement app, and test two-way messaging with a trusted contact. Readers outside the United States should not apply the July 2026 date automatically; regional availability can differ.

- Choose Google Messages when you want the most clearly documented automatic spam controls, a report-and-block workflow, and an unsubscribe option for eligible business messages.
- Stay with Samsung Messages when it is supported on your Galaxy phone, you mainly need manual number blocking, and your regional software provides the filters you want.
- Check before switching when you rely on RCS, two-factor codes, visual voicemail texts, carrier short codes or business notifications. These depend on the carrier, account and app configuration, not just the app’s name.
No available source establishes a universal winner for detection accuracy. The meaningful difference is control scope: Google documents more ways to identify, report and unsubscribe from qualifying messages, while Samsung’s documented controls are more dependent on the specific Galaxy software and region.
