Google Messages is the better-documented choice for scam protection. Google describes on-device machine-learning detection, suspicious-link checks, scam warnings, automatic placement of suspect messages in Spam & blocked, and user reporting. Samsung’s current U.S. guidance says Samsung Messages is discontinued and directs users to Google Messages; it does not publish a comparable, current technical specification for the legacy Samsung Messages filter.
That does not prove Google catches a higher percentage of scams. No controlled, independent head-to-head accuracy test is established here. The practical difference is documented capability, current support and longevity—especially for people using a Galaxy phone in the United States.
What the two apps actually protect against
“Spam” includes more than advertising. A filtering system may encounter bulk messages, phishing links, impersonation attempts, malware delivery, fake account notices and conversational scams that slowly build trust before asking for money or credentials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle describes its system broadly: “Spam protection identifies different types of spam, which includes harmful content like scams and phishing attempts.” Its published documentation covers the detection model, link checking, warnings, message handling and feedback controls. Samsung’s currently available U.S. material concentrates on ending Samsung Messages support and moving users to Google Messages, so equivalent details for the older Samsung filter are not stated.

How Google Messages’ protection stack works
On-device machine learning
When Spam protection is available and enabled, Google Messages uses machine-learning models running on the phone to look for known spam patterns. On-device processing means the initial classification can work without a data connection. That can help when a message arrives while the phone is offline, although feature availability and behavior can vary by device, account, carrier, RCS status and region.
Google also says it may ephemerally process unencrypted message contents for detection and model improvement. “Ephemeral” describes temporary processing, not permanent storage. This is separate from the encryption status of RCS conversations: RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS encryption applies. End-to-end encryption does not mean every message in the app has the same protection; SMS/MMS and RCS have different transport and processing properties.
URL safety checks
If a message contains a URL, Google may upload that URL to verify that it is not malicious. The link check adds a network-based safety step to the on-device pattern analysis. A warning or clean result is not a guarantee that a website is safe, so users should still inspect the sender, domain and request before signing in or paying.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scam warnings and automatic handling
Google Messages can show a suspected-scam warning, prevent suspected spam from being delivered, or move it to the Spam & blocked folder. Google’s October 2024 announcement described suspected scam texts being moved automatically to the spam folder or triggering a warning, with processing performed on-device.
Google’s 2025 security article says Scam Detection covers conversational scams and is included in Spam Protection. That matters because a conversational scam may not contain an obvious malicious URL at first. The message can begin as an apparently ordinary exchange and only later introduce urgency, payment instructions or a request for a verification code.

Automatic activation and the setting to check
Spam protection turns on automatically when it is available. To inspect or change it, open Google Messages and go to profile picture or initial > Messages settings > Protection & safety > Spam protection. The exact appearance of the menu can differ by app version, device language and rollout, but the setting is located under Protection & safety.
Turning protection off removes this automated layer. You can still block or report individual conversations, but you lose the app’s automatic classification and warning behavior while it is disabled.
Reporting is part of the filter
Reporting a conversation as spam does two things in Google Messages: it blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. Google’s help documentation says a report may send Google the spammer’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages. That information is used for abuse-detection improvement, so reporting is useful feedback but is not a zero-data action.
If a legitimate conversation is flagged incorrectly, open it in Spam & blocked and mark it as Not spam. This feedback can restore the conversation and prevents a mistaken classification from being treated as your intended decision.
What is known about Samsung Messages’ filter
U.S. support status
Samsung’s current U.S. end-of-service guidance says Samsung Messages has been discontinued. Samsung says older devices running Android 11 or lower are not affected. Devices on One UI 9.0 or higher are scheduled to make the app removable in fall 2026. The schedule is U.S.-specific; it should not be generalized to every country or device variant.

Samsung recommends switching to Google Messages for a consistent messaging experience and describes Google Messages as offering AI-powered scam detection and robust spam filters. That recommendation is a migration statement, not a technical specification of how Samsung Messages previously scored messages.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What Samsung does not currently document
Samsung’s current public U.S. material does not explain, in a comparable level of detail, how the legacy Samsung Messages filter identifies scams, whether it checks URLs, which processing occurs on-device or in the cloud, how suspected messages are routed, or how a user report changes future detection. Those values should therefore be treated as not stated, rather than assumed to match Google Messages.
The absence of a published specification is not proof that the old filter never blocked scams. It means a reader cannot responsibly assign it a current detection rate, claim algorithmic identity with Google’s system or infer a ranking from marketing language alone.
Google Messages and Samsung Messages compared
| Comparison point | Google Messages | Samsung Messages |
|---|---|---|
| Scam and phishing coverage | Google documents spam, scams, phishing attempts, suspicious links and conversational scams. | Current U.S. technical coverage for the legacy filter is not stated. |
| Detection method | On-device machine-learning models for known spam patterns; URL verification may involve uploading the URL. | Current U.S. algorithm and processing model are not stated. |
| Offline capability | On-device detection can work without a data connection. | Not stated in current U.S. guidance. |
| Message action | Can warn, prevent suspected spam from being delivered, or move it to Spam & blocked. | Current U.S. legacy behavior is not stated. |
| User feedback | Report spam to block and move the sender; mark an incorrectly flagged conversation as Not spam. | Current U.S. feedback workflow is not stated. |
| Privacy disclosures | Google describes temporary processing of some unencrypted content, URL checks and RCS end-to-end encryption when applicable. | Comparable current U.S. disclosure for the legacy filter is not stated. |
| Current U.S. status | Samsung recommends it as the replacement messaging app. | Discontinued; older Android 11-or-lower devices are not affected, while One UI 9.0-or-higher devices are scheduled for removability in fall 2026. |
| Published accuracy rate | Not stated. Google’s figure of more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts each month is a volume claim, not a catch rate. | Not stated. |
Does Google Messages block more scams?
There is no supported percentage answer. Google publishes what its system is designed to do, but the available material does not provide a controlled comparison against Samsung Messages, a common test set, false-positive rates or a measured catch rate. “More than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month,” cited by Google in 2026, describes aggregate volume processed or identified by Google; it does not say that Google catches a particular percentage or outperforms Samsung by a measured margin.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: Google has the more fully documented and actively expanded protection stack. It covers more explicitly named threat types and provides a current warning, quarantine and reporting workflow. That is a stronger basis for choosing an app than an unsupported claim that one filter is mathematically more accurate.

Should you switch from Samsung Messages?
Switch now if you use a U.S. Galaxy phone affected by the end-of-service plan
If your Galaxy phone is in the United States and runs a version of One UI 9.0 or higher, Samsung’s schedule says the app is to become removable in fall 2026. Moving before removal gives you time to verify your conversations, notification behavior and RCS status instead of waiting for a forced change.
Switch if scam protection is your deciding factor
Google Messages is the practical choice when you want documented on-device detection, suspicious-link checking, conversational-scam coverage, warnings, a dedicated Spam & blocked folder and a defined reporting workflow. These controls do not make every message safe, but they give you more visible defenses and clearer recovery options.
Check local support before applying the U.S. conclusion elsewhere
Samsung’s discontinuation statement is explicitly U.S. guidance. Availability, default-app behavior and removal schedules can differ by country, device model, carrier and software release. If you are outside the United States, check Samsung’s support information for your market before treating the U.S. timeline as applicable.
How to enable and use Google Messages protection
- Open Google Messages. If it is not your default SMS app, follow the app’s prompt to set it as the default. The exact prompt depends on the phone’s Android version and current messaging app.
- Open the safety controls. Tap your profile picture or initial, choose Messages settings, then Protection & safety.
- Confirm Spam protection. Leave Spam protection enabled. It is normally turned on automatically when available, but checking the switch confirms the state on your device.
- Review quarantine regularly. Open Spam & blocked when you are missing an expected message. Use Not spam for a legitimate conversation rather than replying from an unknown notification.
- Report genuine abuse. For a scam conversation, use the report-spam action. Google says this blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked; the report may include the sender’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages.
- Inspect warnings before acting. Do not tap a link, send a verification code or authorize a payment merely because a message appears in the inbox. A clean classification is not an identity check for the person or organization contacting you.
Privacy and data-handling trade-offs
What stays on the phone
Google says its machine-learning models operate on the device and can detect known spam patterns without a data connection. Keeping this analysis local can reduce the need to send the full message to a remote service for the initial decision.

What may leave the phone
URL verification may upload a link for malicious-site checking. Google also says it may temporarily process unencrypted message contents for detection and model improvement. Reporting can send the suspected spammer’s number and the last 10 incoming messages. These are separate data flows with different triggers: a URL can prompt link verification, message processing can support detection, and a user report supplies abuse feedback.

How RCS encryption fits
RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS encryption applies. That protection depends on the conversation and service conditions; it should not be treated as a blanket description of SMS, MMS or every message path in Google Messages. Spam controls and encryption address different risks: encryption protects content in transit between supported participants, while spam detection decides whether a message looks abusive or dangerous.
Common failure modes and what to do
A legitimate message disappeared
Open Spam & blocked and look for the conversation. If it is there, mark it Not spam. Add the sender to your contacts only if you independently know the sender; contact status alone is not proof that a message is genuine.
A scam reached the inbox
Do not reply or open its links. Use the report-spam action, which blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. If the message asks for a password, one-time code, payment or urgent account action, contact the organization through a number or website you already trust rather than through the message.
The Spam protection switch is missing
Google says availability varies. Check that you are using the current Google Messages app, then revisit Messages settings > Protection & safety. Device model, Android release, account, carrier, region and rollout status can affect whether the control appears.
RCS behavior changed after switching apps
RCS availability depends on the device, carrier, account and service status. After changing the default messaging app, verify whether the conversation shows the expected RCS status before assuming that encryption or delivery behavior is unchanged.
You are still using Samsung Messages
On a U.S. device covered by Samsung’s end-of-service plan, plan the migration before the fall 2026 removal window if your phone runs One UI 9.0 or higher. If the phone runs Android 11 or lower, Samsung says it is not affected by the stated U.S. change, although local support and future updates can differ.
Quick Recap
What neither app can guarantee
- No filter catches everything. New scam wording, compromised accounts and harmless-looking links can evade automated classification.
- A warning is not the only signal. Treat unexpected urgency, requests for codes or money, secrecy and pressure to move to another app as reasons to verify independently.
- A missing warning does not establish legitimacy. The sender name, phone number and message appearance can be spoofed or copied.
- Availability is conditional. Features can vary by device, software rollout, account, carrier, RCS status and region.
- Accuracy has not been established head-to-head. Neither the published Google material nor Samsung’s current U.S. guidance supplies a controlled comparative catch rate.
Bottom line for different users
- U.S. Galaxy owner on a newer One UI release: Move to Google Messages because Samsung Messages is being discontinued and may become removable in fall 2026 on One UI 9.0-or-higher devices.
- Anyone prioritizing documented scam defenses: Choose Google Messages, enable Spam protection and learn the Spam & blocked and Not spam controls.
- Privacy-focused user: Review Google’s on-device processing, possible URL uploads, temporary unencrypted-content processing and report-data disclosures before enabling or using the features.
- User outside the United States: Verify Samsung’s local support status; the U.S. discontinuation timeline is not automatically worldwide.
- User seeking a proven accuracy winner: No reliable conclusion is available without a controlled independent comparison.
