RCS is Google Messages’ internet-based chat mode; SMS and MMS are carrier-delivered fallbacks. RCS can add typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution photos, file sharing and richer group conversations. SMS carries text, while MMS carries multimedia. The mode is chosen per conversation according to recipient support, device and carrier availability, settings, and your data connection.

Look at the compose bar before sending: its send indicator says whether the message will use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. That label tells you both which features are available and which privacy and billing rules apply.

What is the difference between RCS and SMS?

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a chat standard that runs over Wi-Fi or mobile data. In Google Messages, an RCS conversation can show when someone is typing, indicate when a message was read, deliver higher-resolution media, share files, and support more capable group chats. Every participant must have RCS enabled for the conversation to use those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SMS (Short Message Service) is the carrier’s text-message service. MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is the carrier’s multimedia service for items such as photos, videos, or voice messages. They do not require an internet data connection in the way RCS does, and they remain available when RCS cannot be used.

These are not three separate applications. Google Messages is one app that selects RCS, SMS, or MMS for each send. A conversation can use RCS today and fall back to SMS or MMS later if a participant, setting, carrier, or connection changes.

What does RCS mean in Google Messages?

RCS means Rich Communication Services. In practical terms, it is the mode that makes Google Messages behave more like an internet chat app while preserving the same conversation list and compose screen. Messages can travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data instead of the operator’s SMS/MMS channel.

RCS features are negotiated for the whole conversation. If one person lacks RCS support or has it turned off, Google Messages cannot provide an RCS chat to that group. The app instead offers SMS or MMS delivery. Settings also matter: a participant may have a compatible phone but still be disconnected from RCS.

For the current feature and availability rules, see Google’s RCS chats by Google FAQ.

What RCS adds to a chat

  • Typing indicators, so compatible participants can see that a reply is being composed.
  • Read receipts, subject to each participant’s settings and compatible support.
  • Delivery over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • File sharing and higher-resolution photos.
  • Richer group-chat behavior than basic SMS or MMS.

Those features are not promises that every message will always use RCS. The send mode shown in the conversation is authoritative for that message.

How to check which mode a message will use

Open a conversation in Google Messages and inspect the send control in the compose bar. Google labels the action according to the available route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Wi-Fi or mobile-data indicator means the message is set to use RCS.
  • An SMS indicator means it will use SMS.
  • An MMS indicator means it will use MMS, generally because multimedia content is being sent through the carrier route.

An end-to-end encrypted conversation also displays a lock on the send button. The lock is a useful check before sending sensitive information, but its absence does not identify whether the message is SMS or MMS; read the transport label as well.

Google documents these indicators and the RCS connection screen in Turn on RCS chats in Google Messages.

How to turn on RCS and verify its connection

You need a compatible Android phone, the current Google Messages app, a supported mobile operator and a region where RCS is offered. Buying a new phone is not necessary if your existing device and carrier already meet those conditions.

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initials, then open Messages settings.
  3. Tap RCS chats. On some app versions the entry may be labeled Chat features.
  4. Turn on RCS chats if the switch is available.
  5. Read the connection status before leaving the screen.

Google lists these statuses:

  • Connected: RCS is available for your account and device.
  • Connecting: the app is attempting to register.
  • Trouble connecting or Awaiting retry: registration or network communication has failed temporarily.
  • Not supported: the device, carrier or region does not currently offer RCS for that account.

A setting cannot create carrier support where none exists. If the screen says Not supported, check the device and operator requirements rather than repeatedly toggling the switch. If it says Connecting or Awaiting retry, use a reliable data connection, install available Messages updates, and retry later.

Why did my RCS message send as SMS?

  • The recipient has no RCS support, has turned RCS off, or is temporarily unregistered.
  • A group contains a participant who cannot use RCS.
  • Your own RCS status is Connecting, Awaiting retry, or Not supported.
  • Wi-Fi or mobile data is unavailable or blocked.
  • The operator or region does not provide RCS at that moment.
  • The conversation is with a business or another endpoint whose RCS capabilities differ from a person using Google Messages.

First open Messages settings > RCS chats and check the status. Then return to the conversation and read the send indicator. This separates an account-registration problem from a recipient-compatibility problem.

Resending when data delivery fails

Google Messages can offer to resend an undelivered RCS message as SMS or MMS. You can configure automatic resend behavior in the RCS-chat settings. Before enabling it, consider two consequences:

  • The fallback is not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Carrier terms, including possible messaging or multimedia charges, apply.

If you choose the option to send media as “SMS with a link,” Google warns that the media may become accessible through a public link that Google does not control. Use that option only when making the link public is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does RCS use Wi-Fi or mobile data?

Yes. RCS sends over Wi-Fi or mobile data. On Wi-Fi, it does not use your cellular-message allowance; Google says there is no extra RCS cost over Wi-Fi that does not itself require payment. On mobile data, the traffic is governed by your data plan, so your operator’s data terms apply.

SMS and MMS use the mobile operator’s messaging service instead. Whether they cost extra depends on your plan and carrier. Google’s help pages do not establish a universal price, so check the terms for your number and country.

A phone can have a strong cellular signal yet fail to send RCS if mobile data is disabled, restricted for Messages, or unavailable to the registration service. Conversely, SMS may still work when data service is down.

Are RCS messages encrypted?

SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Eligible RCS chats between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption when all participants use Google Messages with RCS turned on. Those conversations show a lock next to the send button. Google explains the eligibility and lock indicator in Use end-to-end encryption in Google Messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the RCS label alone as proof of end-to-end encryption. Google says RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted; its business guidance is available at RCS chats with businesses. A conversation with a non-Google endpoint can also have different protection.

Encryption protects message content in an eligible conversation, but it does not change carrier billing, data use, or whether the other person can copy or share what they receive.

Can Google Messages RCS work with iPhone?

Cross-platform RCS can provide basic RCS features between Android and iPhone users when the iPhone, carrier and region support the service. Availability and the exact feature set are not universal, so inspect the send indicator in the individual conversation rather than assuming that every mixed group is RCS.

Google’s FAQ states that RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. Separately, Google announced that a carrier-dependent beta rollout of cross-platform end-to-end encrypted RCS began in 2026 for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. That announcement describes an evolving, limited rollout—not a guarantee that every Android–iPhone chat is encrypted. Check current device and carrier support before relying on it. The announcement is documented in Google’s 2026 cross-platform RCS update.

How media and group chats change by mode

Photos, videos and files

RCS is designed for file sharing and high-resolution photos over data. When RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can send multimedia through MMS, subject to your operator’s implementation and plan. If the app offers SMS with a link as an alternative, remember that anyone with the link may be able to access the media. Google’s sending guidance is at Send photos, videos, or voice messages in Google Messages.

Because operators set their own MMS rules, do not assume that an attachment that works through RCS will have the same quality, size or delivery behavior through MMS.

Groups

An RCS group can use typing indicators, read receipts and richer media when every participant is eligible and connected. Adding someone without RCS support can change the group’s transport to SMS/MMS, removing those RCS-only features. A group’s behavior can therefore change after a participant changes phone, carrier, region or settings.

Choosing the right mode for a message

Situation Practical choice Reason
Everyone uses compatible Google Messages RCS and the lock is shown Use RCS You can use chat features and eligible end-to-end encryption.
Recipient lacks RCS or the status is Not supported Use SMS for text or MMS for media These are the available carrier fallbacks.
Mobile data is unavailable but cellular messaging works Use SMS/MMS if the send indicator offers it Carrier messaging may work without an active data connection.
Sensitive content in a conversation without a lock Do not assume it is private SMS, MMS, business RCS and some cross-platform RCS chats are not end-to-end encrypted.
Large or high-resolution media Prefer RCS when all participants support it RCS is intended for higher-resolution media and files; MMS limits vary by operator.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Assuming every blue or rich-looking bubble proves encryption

Visual styling is not the security test. Check for the lock beside the send button and confirm that all participants are eligible Google Messages RCS users.

Turning on RCS and expecting an unsupported network to change

If RCS chats shows Not supported, verify carrier and regional availability. A compatible Android handset alone is insufficient.

Leaving automatic SMS/MMS resend enabled without considering cost

Automatic fallback can get a message delivered, but it changes the transport, removes end-to-end encryption, and may invoke carrier charges. Choose the setting that matches your privacy and reliability priorities.

Sending private media through an SMS link

A public link can be forwarded or opened by anyone who obtains it. Use direct RCS delivery or another private sharing method when access control matters.

Expecting iPhone conversations to match Android-only RCS

Cross-platform support and encryption are still carrier- and version-dependent. Check the actual conversation’s send indicator and lock instead of relying on the recipient’s phone brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick diagnostic checklist

  1. Open Messages settings > RCS chats and note the connection status.
  2. Confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data is available and that Messages is allowed to use it.
  3. Check the compose-bar indicator in the affected conversation.
  4. Ask whether the recipient has RCS enabled and whether the conversation includes a business or mixed-platform participant.
  5. For a failed send, decide deliberately whether to retry RCS, send SMS/MMS, or wait for connectivity.
  6. Before sending sensitive content, verify the lock and avoid SMS-with-a-link media sharing unless public access is acceptable.

Bottom line: which should you use?

Use RCS when the conversation shows a Wi-Fi/mobile-data route and the participants support it: you gain richer chat features, better media handling and, in eligible Google Messages conversations, end-to-end encryption. Use SMS for carrier-delivered text and MMS for carrier-delivered multimedia when RCS is unavailable. Always read the send indicator and, for privacy-sensitive conversations, look for the lock; the label—not the app name or bubble appearance—determines what changes for that message.
