Use website crawling when your product pages expose complete, consistent Product and Offer structured data and Google can crawl them reliably. Treat automatic item updates as a limited correction layer for price, sale price, availability, and condition—not as your main feed. If prices or stock change frequently, use scheduled source updates or, preferably, the Merchant API. Website crawling is a product-source method inside Merchant Center, not a replacement for Merchant Center or for maintaining accurate product data.

The short answer: match the method to your catalog’s change rate

Google Merchant Center supports several ways to get product information. A website-crawl product source lets Google discover products on your store, read the structured data on those pages, and create a source in Merchant Center. A scheduled data source retrieves a product-data file on a timetable. The Merchant API sends changes directly through an integration. Automatic item updates sit beside these methods: they can correct selected mismatches by comparing submitted values with information on a landing page.

Those functions are easy to confuse because they all involve Google reading store information. They are not interchangeable, however. Crawling is a submission method, automatic item updates are a safeguard, and scheduled files or API calls are controlled update workflows.

Store situation Best starting point What to verify
Product pages have accurate structured data and can be crawled Website-crawl product source Website is verified and claimed, Google can collect data, Googlebot is allowed, and products meet eligibility requirements.
A mostly reliable source has occasional landing-page mismatches Automatic item updates as a supplement Price, sale price, availability, and condition are accurate on the page; continue regular source updates.
Price or stock changes more than once a day Frequent source updates or Merchant API Use a process that sends changes directly; do not rely on automatic updates alone.
Pages are blocked, slow, or contain incomplete or conflicting markup Fix access and data quality, then use a controlled source workflow Allow crawling, correct markup, reconcile site and source values, and monitor diagnostics.

Google’s documentation does not establish a universal winner for every catalog. Extraction accuracy, implementation effort, and update timing depend on your store, server, and data pipeline. Validate the method in your own Merchant Center account rather than assuming that one option will perform identically everywhere.

What “store crawling” means in Merchant Center

A crawl can create a product source

With automatic product submission from an online store, Google discovers eligible product pages, reads their structured data, and can create a product source in Merchant Center. You still use Merchant Center; the crawl is simply how product records enter the account.

Eligibility is conditional. Google requires a verified and claimed store website, permission for Google to collect the data, and product pages whose markup can be crawled and extracted. Google also states that automatically submitted store products are checked at least once every 24 hours. That is a stated checking cadence, not a promise that every price or availability change will appear immediately.

The page must describe the offer shoppers see

Structured data needs to represent the same product information a customer sees on the landing page. For automatic item updates, Google identifies the price, priceCurrency, availability, and condition properties as important. If a page contains several offers, Google may need SKU or GTIN identifiers to match the correct offer to the Merchant Center item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not serve one value to Google and another to shoppers through customer-specific, location-specific, cookie-based, or delayed page changes. A crawler that reads a different price or stock state from the one presented to customers can create mismatches, disapprovals, or stale listings.

Crawling is not a real-time channel

A page can be changed seconds after Google last fetched it. The daily check described by Google therefore should be understood as a minimum stated cadence for automatically added products, not guaranteed latency. If a flash sale, rapidly moving inventory, or frequent repricing requires faster propagation, use a source that you can update directly and often.

What automatic item updates do—and do not do

A correction mechanism for a limited attribute set

Automatic item updates compare submitted product values with information on the landing page. Google lists price, sale price, availability, and condition among the attributes that can be adjusted when a mismatch is detected. This can reduce the impact of an occasional synchronization error, such as a feed that still contains yesterday’s price while the page has already changed.

Not a replacement for your product source

Google explicitly describes automatic updates as a way to address mismatches, not as a substitute for providing accurate product data frequently. They do not turn an incomplete catalog into a complete one, repair blocked crawling, or replace a reliable schedule for sending new products and removals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the feature as a safety net. Your feed, crawl, scheduled file, or API remains the system that should intentionally publish the current catalog. Automatic updates should never be the only process your team relies on for a business-critical price or inventory change.

Conditions for useful automatic updates

  • Product and Offer markup is present in the HTML returned by the web server.
  • The markup contains the current price, currency, availability, and condition where applicable.
  • The landing page is accessible to Googlebot and shows the same offer to customers.
  • Multiple offers can be matched with the correct Merchant Center item using SKU or GTIN when needed.
  • The underlying product source continues to receive regular, accurate updates.

Scheduled data sources: a controlled file workflow

A scheduled data source retrieves a directly accessible product-data file on a timetable you configure. The file might be generated by your commerce system or an export job, but Merchant Center must be pointed to the file itself. Google’s instructions distinguish the product-file URL from a web page: an HTML product or category page is not a valid substitute for the data-source file.

When a scheduled file fits

  • Your store can export a complete, consistently formatted catalog.
  • Prices and inventory change on a predictable schedule rather than continuously.
  • You want a reviewable snapshot that can be archived, validated, and regenerated.
  • Your team needs more control than a crawl provides but does not need per-change API calls.

Operational sequence

  1. Generate the product-data file from the authoritative catalog.
  2. Validate required fields, identifiers, prices, currencies, availability, and condition before publishing it.
  3. Place the file at a stable, directly accessible URL that Merchant Center can retrieve.
  4. Schedule retrieval after the export job has completed, so Google does not fetch a partially written file.
  5. Review processing results and product diagnostics after each retrieval, then reconcile errors with the source system.

A scheduled file is only as current as its generation schedule and the time at which Merchant Center retrieves it. If a product can sell out several times between retrievals, the schedule is not frequent enough for that catalog.

Merchant API: the direct path for rapidly changing data

Google recommends the Merchant API for products whose prices or availability change frequently. This is particularly relevant when values can change more than once per day, a situation in which Google warns that automatic updates may not work well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an API workflow changes

Instead of waiting for a crawl or the next file retrieval, your commerce or inventory system can send an intentional update when a price or stock event occurs. The API does not remove the need for valid product data, identifiers, permissions, or diagnostics; it gives the update process a more direct control point.

Use event updates with reconciliation

A robust integration sends changes from the system that owns the value, records the response, retries transient failures, and periodically compares Merchant Center with the authoritative catalog. Direct updates should not be treated as a reason to abandon landing-page markup. The page and the submitted value still need to agree when Google checks the offer.

When an API is justified

  • Inventory changes several times a day or sales can exhaust stock quickly.
  • Prices are repriced automatically or vary frequently.
  • The catalog is large enough that full-file regeneration is slow or wasteful.
  • You need auditable, event-level update status and error handling.

How to choose: a practical decision framework

Choose website crawling first when all of these are true

  • Your product pages already contain complete, valid Product and Offer structured data.
  • The page values match what shoppers see without customer-specific divergence.
  • The website is verified and claimed in Merchant Center.
  • Googlebot and Googlebot-Image are not blocked or aggressively throttled.
  • Your price and inventory change rate is compatible with a crawl-based workflow.

This approach minimizes manual file handling because the store pages are the source Google reads. It still requires monitoring: a template change, blocked bot, JavaScript rendering issue, or conflicting field can prevent a product from being discovered or updated.

Add automatic item updates when the source is sound but occasional mismatches occur

Enable the feature only as a supplement to the normal source. Confirm that the eligible attributes are marked up accurately, then continue publishing regular updates. If diagnostics show repeated corrections, fix the feed or integration rather than treating the corrections as normal operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to a scheduled file when you need predictable batch control

Use this route when your catalog can be exported reliably and your change frequency is measured in scheduled batches. It is often easier to validate a complete file than to debug many page templates, but it requires a dependable export and retrieval schedule.

Use the Merchant API for high-frequency changes

If values change more than once daily, or if a delay can cause an oversell or a misleading price, follow Google’s recommendation and use the API or another frequent source-update process. Automatic item updates should not be your high-frequency synchronization strategy.

Implementation checklist for a crawl-based source

Account and access

  1. Verify and claim the store website in Merchant Center.
  2. Grant permission for Google to collect product information.
  3. Check robots rules, firewall settings, CDN controls, and rate limits so Googlebot can fetch product pages.
  4. Ensure the server has enough capacity for Googlebot and Googlebot-Image; do not throttle them as if they were abusive traffic.

Page markup

  1. Place Product and Offer structured data in the HTML returned by the web server.
  2. Populate price, currency, availability, and condition with the values currently shown to shoppers.
  3. Expose stable SKU or GTIN identifiers when multiple offers appear on one page.
  4. Keep markup synchronized when a variant, sale, or stock state changes.

Validation and monitoring

  • Test representative product templates with Google Search Console or the Rich Results Test.
  • Test in-stock, out-of-stock, regular-price, sale-price, and multiple-offer cases rather than only one product.
  • Review Merchant Center diagnostics for extraction errors, disapprovals, and conflicts.
  • Compare a sample of landing pages with the values in the product source after template or pricing changes.

Common failure modes and fixes

Google cannot discover products

Verify the website claim, crawl permissions, internal links, server responses, and bot access. A page that works in a human browser can still be blocked by robots rules, authentication, a firewall challenge, or rate limiting.

Structured data is present but incomplete

Inspect the server-delivered HTML, not only a client-side view. Add the required Product and Offer properties, correct invalid values, and ensure the markup describes the visible offer. Retest the template after deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price or availability conflicts with the page

Google lists conflicting data as a common product-data issue. Find the authoritative value, then update both the source and the landing-page markup. Check caching layers and localized pages that may serve an older value.

Automatic updates keep correcting the same item

Repeated corrections indicate an unresolved synchronization problem. Compare the submitted value, structured data, rendered page, and inventory system timestamps. Repair the normal source process and leave automatic updates as a backup rather than accepting recurring corrections.

Updates arrive too late

First determine whether the delay is caused by the crawl cadence, a scheduled retrieval, file-generation timing, processing errors, or an API failure. If price or availability changes more than once daily, redesign the workflow around frequent source updates or the Merchant API instead of trying to make automatic updates act like a real-time feed.

A scheduled source is rejected

Confirm that Merchant Center points to the product-data file, not an HTML page. Check that the URL is directly accessible at retrieval time and that the generated file is complete and valid.

Keeping the systems consistent over time

Define one owner for each field

Assign price, sale price, availability, condition, SKU, and GTIN to an authoritative system. Your page template, scheduled export, crawl source, and API integration should all derive those values from that owner. Multiple independently edited copies are a common path to conflicts.

Use change-aware monitoring

Monitor the fields that can trigger customer-visible errors first: price, sale price, and availability. Alert on failed exports, missed API calls, blocked fetches, sudden drops in crawled products, and repeated automatic corrections. A daily crawl check does not remove the need for operational monitoring between checks.

Reconcile after every structural change

Recheck representative products after a redesign, platform migration, currency change, inventory-system change, or new variant model. Validate both markup and Merchant Center diagnostics; a successful page load alone does not prove that Google extracted the intended offer.

Examples by business model

Small catalog with stable prices

A store with a few hundred products, daily or less frequent changes, and clean server-rendered markup can start with a website-crawl source. Automatic item updates may provide protection against an occasional mismatch, while the team reviews diagnostics and keeps the catalog data current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retail catalog with daily batch changes

If inventory and pricing are exported once or several times per day, a scheduled data file can provide predictable control. The export must finish before retrieval, and the retrieval interval must reflect how quickly stock can change.

High-volume or rapidly repriced catalog

When events occur more than once per day, use frequent source updates or the Merchant API. Keep product-page structured data synchronized so the landing page does not contradict the direct update.

JavaScript-heavy or protected storefront

Do not assume that because a product appears after browser scripts run, Google can extract it reliably. Confirm what the server returns, remove access barriers for Googlebot, and use a controlled data-source workflow while fixing the page implementation.

What the evidence does not establish

Google’s guidance supports the definitions, prerequisites, daily checking statement, and recommendations above. It does not provide a controlled comparison of cost, implementation time, extraction accuracy across merchants, or guaranteed latency for crawling versus feeds or API updates. Those outcomes must be measured against your own catalog, templates, server capacity, and change frequency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, “at least once every 24 hours” should not be presented as a guaranteed time for a particular change to appear. It describes Google’s stated check cadence for products added automatically from an online store; eligibility, successful extraction, processing, and policy checks still affect what happens next.

A final selection checklist

  • Can Google crawl and extract the page? If not, fix access and markup before choosing a crawl source.
  • Do page values match shopper-visible values? If not, resolve the mismatch at its source.
  • How often do price and availability change? More than once daily points toward frequent updates or the Merchant API.
  • Do you need batch review and archival? A scheduled product-data file may be the better operational fit.
  • Are occasional mismatches the only problem? Automatic item updates can supplement, but not replace, regular submissions.
  • Can you monitor failures? Choose a workflow your team can validate, retry, and reconcile.
