Google Merchant Center does not offer a universal “turn on UCP” switch. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for agentic commerce, while Merchant Center remains the hub for product data. To use Google’s UCP-powered checkout, a merchant must complete the technical implementation, submit Google’s interest form, and be selected. Only eligible listings carrying native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) can show the UCP Buy button.
This guide explains the documented product-data, checkout, onboarding, capability, regional-access and order-update considerations, including what Google has not documented as a Merchant Center setting.
What UCP settings in Merchant Center actually control
Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol is intended to let agents and merchant systems cooperate across discovery, purchase and post-purchase support. Google Merchant Center is the operational hub for preparing the product information that appears on Google surfaces; it is not itself the UCP protocol or a replacement for your commerce platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle Merchant Center Help defines UCP as “a new open standard for agentic commerce that enables agents and systems to work together across the commerce ecosystem.” In the same documentation, Google says Merchant Center “will continue to be the central hub to prepare your product data to show ads and listings on Google surfaces.”

In practical terms, the documented Merchant Center controls and prerequisites fall into four areas:
- Accurate product feeds and current brand assets.
- Product-level checkout eligibility, represented by
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility). - UCP implementation, onboarding and sandbox validation after Google selects your business.
- Capability choices such as transferring a cart to your site, completing native checkout on Google, and linking customer identity.
Those controls do not establish that every listing, account or country can use UCP checkout. Eligibility is selective and depends on the product, merchant, region and implementation.
Is UCP available to every Merchant Center account?
No. Google’s current flow is staged rather than self-serve. You first complete the technical work, then submit an interest form. Google selects merchants for access; only after selection does the UCP integration hub and its sandbox become available in Merchant Center.
Google’s feature guidance describes UCP checkout on eligible listings in AI Mode in Google Search and in Gemini. It names eligible products and participating merchants in the United States, Canada and Australia. This is an availability description, not a promise that every merchant or product in those countries qualifies.

The onboarding guidance separately describes a gradual rollout of the integration hub in the United States, with Australia and Canada to follow the next year. Because that wording is tied to Google’s rollout schedule and can change, treat the hub as invitation- or selection-based and verify the current status in your account before planning a launch.
Product-data settings to prepare first
Keep feeds accurate and complete
UCP does not remove the need for sound Merchant Center data. Review the feeds that supply titles, descriptions, prices, availability, images, identifiers, shipping information and other required attributes. Resolve disapprovals and stale inventory before asking Google to evaluate a UCP implementation. A technically correct protocol connection cannot make an inaccurate listing eligible or trustworthy.
Maintain brand assets
Google’s onboarding instructions also call for robust, current brand assets. Check that your business name, logos and other assets are consistent with the merchant identity presented at checkout. Keep assets updated when branding, ownership or legal business details change.
Understand the checkout-eligibility attribute
The UCP Buy button is tied to a specific product attribute. Google says only listings using native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) display the UCP checkout button. Do not infer that enabling UCP for an account automatically enables every item in its catalog.

| Listing condition | What the documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) is present |
The listing can display the UCP Buy button when the merchant and product are otherwise eligible. | It does not guarantee placement, traffic, selection or approval for every region. |
| Attribute is absent | The listing is not documented as eligible to display the UCP checkout button. | It does not explain why the attribute is absent; inspect your feed and platform implementation. |
| Feed or brand data is stale | Google advises keeping product data and brand assets accurate and up to date. | UCP cannot be used as a substitute for fixing feed quality. |
How can I implement the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
Use the following sequence. The order matters because the Merchant Center onboarding surface is not documented as available before technical implementation and selection.
- Choose or build a compatible implementation. Implement the UCP interfaces required by your commerce system, including the APIs relevant to the capabilities you intend to offer. If a third-party provider runs your storefront or checkout, ask that provider directly about its UCP plans; Google does not publish a blanket compatibility claim for named platforms.
- Prepare Merchant Center data. Correct feed errors, update availability and pricing, refresh images and identifiers, and review brand assets. Confirm that products intended for native checkout can carry
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility). - Complete the technical implementation. Finish the UCP profile and the merchant-side endpoints needed for the selected journey. Keep credentials, authentication, catalog mappings and error handling ready for testing.
- Submit Google’s interest form. The form is the documented request for consideration; submitting it does not itself grant access.
- Wait for selection. Google must select the merchant before the Merchant Center onboarding experience appears. Do not treat a missing hub as a configuration mistake until you have confirmed that selection has occurred.
- Use the Merchant Center integration hub and sandbox. After selection, validate the UCP profile, cart transfer and native-checkout APIs in Google’s sandbox. Exercise successful, declined, cancelled, out-of-stock and invalid-cart responses before requesting production use.
- Select only the capabilities you can operate. The hub lets merchants choose cart transfer to the merchant site, native checkout on Google and identity linking. Enable a capability only after its customer-service, payment and fulfillment implications are covered.
- Recheck listings and monitor launch behavior. Confirm the checkout-eligibility attribute on intended products, then monitor feed freshness, API errors, payment failures, cancellations and support requests after access is granted.
Choosing UCP capabilities
These are implementation choices, not competing Merchant Center plans. Your platform or service provider must support the underlying interfaces, and your products must meet Google’s eligibility requirements.
| Capability | Customer journey | Implementation questions | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cart transfer to merchant site | An agent helps assemble a cart, then hands the customer to your website to finish checkout. | Can your system accept a transferred cart securely? Are prices, promotions, tax, shipping and inventory recalculated on arrival? | Useful when your existing site is the system of record and you are not ready to operate a Google-hosted checkout. |
| Native checkout on Google | The eligible product is purchased through the UCP checkout experience in supported Google surfaces. | Can your APIs return authoritative totals, fulfillment choices, order confirmation and failure states in real time? | Suitable when the merchant can support the complete checkout contract and wants fewer handoffs. |
| Identity linking | The agent or Google experience links a customer identity with the merchant account where supported. | What consent, account matching, token security, account recovery and deletion processes do you operate? | Appropriate when signed-in benefits or post-purchase account functions require a reliable identity relationship. |
You do not have to expose every capability. A narrower, well-tested implementation is safer than advertising a journey your systems cannot complete.
How Google’s native checkout works
For the checkout feature described by Google, the merchant remains the seller of record. Google provides the checkout surface and payment handling described in its guidance; it does not become the retailer responsible for the sale.

The documented payment flow uses Google Pay and payment details stored in Google Wallet. Google’s feature page says it currently uses standard Funding Primary Account Numbers (FPANs), while also noting that payment options may change. Treat that as a current implementation detail, not a permanent payment guarantee. Your own order, refund, fraud and reconciliation systems still need to handle the resulting transaction.
Native checkout appears only when the product, merchant, region and surface are eligible. A product feed that is valid for ordinary ads or listings is not automatically eligible for UCP checkout.
What changes do I need to make to my Merchant Center account?
There is no documented account-wide toggle that turns UCP on for all products. The practical account changes are readiness and onboarding tasks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Keep feeds and brand assets accurate.
- Ensure the products intended for native checkout use
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility)where your implementation supports it. - Complete technical implementation and the interest form.
- After selection, use the integration hub to configure and test the capabilities you actually support.
- Coordinate Merchant Center data with the catalog, cart, checkout, payment and identity systems behind your store.
If the hub is not visible, the documented explanation may simply be that your merchant has not been selected or that rollout has not reached your account.

Order updates: what is documented and what is not
UCP’s stated scope includes post-purchase support, so the protocol is broader than discovery and payment. However, the official Merchant Center guidance described here does not identify a specific setting for order-status synchronization, shipment notifications, returns, refunds or post-purchase messages.
Do not invent a menu path such as an “Order updates” switch, and do not assume that enabling native checkout automatically synchronizes orders. Until Google documents a dedicated control, treat order updates as a system-integration responsibility involving your order-management, fulfillment and customer-support systems. Confirm the exact interfaces and obligations presented in the onboarding materials available to your selected account.
Troubleshooting common UCP setup problems
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The UCP integration hub is missing. | Selection or regional rollout has not reached the account. | Confirm that technical implementation and the interest form are complete; wait for selection and recheck current rollout guidance. |
| The Buy button does not appear for a product. | The listing may lack native_commerce(checkout_eligibility), or the product, merchant, region or surface may not be eligible. |
Inspect the feed attribute, resolve listing issues and verify eligibility rather than assuming an account-wide failure. |
| Sandbox cart totals differ from the site. | Price, promotion, tax, shipping or inventory logic is not synchronized. | Make the merchant system authoritative and test recalculation, unavailable items and changed quantities. |
| Checkout fails after payment selection. | The native-checkout API, payment handling or error responses are incomplete. | Test Google Pay and Wallet-related responses in the sandbox, return clear recoverable errors and reconcile successful and failed attempts. |
| A provider cannot answer whether it supports UCP. | Google has not established universal compatibility for third-party platforms. | Request the provider’s current UCP implementation status, supported capabilities and rollout conditions in writing. |
| A team expects automatic order notifications. | The reviewed guidance does not document an order-update setting. | Design and verify post-purchase integrations separately; do not promise synchronization based only on checkout access. |
Regional and rollout checks before launch
Google’s feature guidance names the United States, Canada and Australia for eligible products and participating merchants. Its onboarding guidance describes a gradual U.S. integration-hub rollout and says Australia and Canada follow the next year. Those statements describe Google’s rollout at the time of the guidance and can become outdated.

UCP launch checklist
- Technical UCP implementation is complete and authenticated.
- Interest form has been submitted and selection status is known.
- Merchant Center feeds contain current prices, availability and identifiers.
- Brand assets match the merchant identity used in checkout.
- Target listings carry
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility)where applicable. - Sandbox tests cover valid carts, changed inventory, failed payments, cancellations and refunds.
- The team has chosen cart transfer, native checkout, identity linking or a deliberate combination.
- The merchant remains prepared to act as seller of record.
- Google Pay, Google Wallet and current FPAN behavior are accounted for in reconciliation and support procedures.
- Order-status and post-purchase responsibilities are explicitly assigned even though no dedicated Merchant Center order-update setting is documented.
- Country, surface and product eligibility have been rechecked immediately before launch.
Bottom line for merchants
Think of Merchant Center as the product-data and onboarding hub, not a universal UCP control panel. Prepare clean feeds and brand assets, implement UCP on your commerce systems, submit the interest form, and wait for selection. Once access is granted, use the sandbox to validate the profile, cart and checkout APIs, then enable only the capabilities and listings you can support. The documented guidance covers UCP’s broad post-purchase scope but does not provide a specific Merchant Center order-update setting, so keep that part of the architecture explicit and separately verified.
