For Google Merchant Center, submit one accurate, crawlable main image in image_link. Keep the product unobstructed: no promotional copy, prices, calls to action, watermarks, borders, QR codes, or added retailer and manufacturer logos. As of October 2026, the documented minimum is 100 × 100 pixels for non-apparel and 250 × 250 pixels for apparel. Google has announced a 500 × 500-pixel minimum for every product beginning January 31, 2027. For better quality, Google recommends 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger.
What Google Merchant Center requires in a product image
Your main product image is the asset Google uses to represent the offer in Shopping surfaces. It must show the actual item advertised, be available at the submitted URL, and be accessible to Google’s crawlers. A generic placeholder, a stock “image coming soon” graphic, or a URL that opens a product page instead of the image does not satisfy the requirement.
- Put one primary image URL in
image_link. - Use an HTTP or HTTPS URL that returns the image file directly.
- Make the file publicly reachable by both Googlebot and Googlebot-image.
- Show the complete product clearly, in focus and with adequate lighting.
- Remove added text, promotional graphics, watermarks and borders.
The product’s own physical branding is part of the item and is not the same as a logo digitally placed over the photo. The image should still make the product—not an advertisement or sales message—the visual focus.

Google’s currently documented minimums and its announced 2027 change are different from its quality recommendation. The minimum is a pass/fail threshold; 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger is the recommended working target.

Google began warning about images below 500 × 500 pixels in July 2026. A file that passes today’s category-specific minimum can therefore still need replacement before the January 31, 2027 enforcement date. Planning all new photography at 1500 × 1500 pixels or above avoids repeatedly rebuilding assets, provided the file remains under the megapixel and size ceilings.
Do not submit a thumbnail and do not enlarge a small source image with software. Upscaling increases pixel count but cannot restore detail, so the result can remain soft or misleading. Keep the product’s silhouette visible and aim for the item to occupy roughly 75–90% of the frame. Leave enough margin that no part is clipped.
How the main image should look
Use a clear, faithful product view
The principal image should be crisp, in focus and well lit. A white or light neutral background is a practical default because it separates the item from the page and keeps the product easy to identify. A staged image can be acceptable when it still shows the advertised product clearly and does not let props or scenery obscure it.

Show the full product silhouette whenever the product itself is the subject. Avoid crops that hide a component, cut off a wearable item, or make a bundle look like a single object. If the offer contains several pieces, use the main image to represent the advertised set and reserve close-ups for supplementary images.
Do not turn the photo into an advert
Google’s text-on-image guidance excludes added calls to action such as “Buy” or “Shop now,” prices, shipping offers, promotional adjectives, warranty or service claims, compatibility or condition labels, barcodes, QR codes, watermarks, overlays, and retailer or manufacturer names or logos added in post-production. Remove these elements from the primary file rather than attempting to hide them with a crop or a smaller type size.

Which file formats and URLs are accepted?
Google’s product data specification lists JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP and TIFF. Check both the encoded file and its URL: the extension should agree with the actual format, and the server should return the image with a usable content type. An animated GIF is not the same as the accepted non-animated format.
- Direct file: the URL should return the raw image, not an HTML product page, login screen or restricted preview.
- Stable address: keep the URL available while Google reviews and serves the offer.
- Public access: firewall rules, authentication, robots settings or hotlink protection must not block Googlebot or Googlebot-image.
- Accurate data: the file must depict the item named in the product data, not a generic category illustration.
Before submitting, open the URL in a private browser window and inspect the response with your hosting or CDN diagnostics. A human being able to view the image does not prove that Google’s crawler can fetch it; security policies can treat automated requests differently.
How to use image_link, additional_image_link and lifestyle_image_link
image_link: one primary image
Supply exactly one main image in image_link. This is the product’s representative image and should meet the strictest composition rules: unobstructed product, no added promotional graphics, suitable dimensions and a crawlable direct URL.
additional_image_link: supporting views
Use additional_image_link for optional supporting images. Google allows up to 10 additional image URLs. They can show alternate angles, a close-up of an important feature, packaging, product-in-use scenes, or the separate parts of a bundle. These images should remain relevant to the same offer and comply with the applicable technical image requirements.
lifestyle_image_link: contextual presentation
For context—such as clothing worn by a model or furniture staged in a room—use the dedicated lifestyle_image_link attribute where available in your product data setup. A lifestyle scene should clarify how the product appears in use, not replace an accurate primary representation.

What to check before uploading
- Confirm the offer: verify that the photograph matches the product title, variant, quantity and bundle represented by the feed.
- Inspect composition: remove overlays and added logos; check that the product is unobstructed, in focus and fully visible.
- Measure the file: use at least the applicable current minimum, but preferably 1500 × 1500 pixels or more. Keep it below 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
- Validate the format: confirm the actual encoding is JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP or TIFF and matches the URL extension.
- Test the URL: request the direct image in a private browser and from your hosting tools; look for redirects to a page, access controls or intermittent failures.
- Check the crawler path: ensure Googlebot and Googlebot-image are not blocked by robots rules, a CDN, a WAF, referrer checks or authentication.
- Separate image roles: put only the representative image in
image_link; move angles and contextual shots to the supplementary fields. - Preserve required metadata: if generative AI created the image, retain metadata identifying it as AI-generated.
Generative-AI images and metadata
Google’s official specification states: “All images created using generative AI must contain metadata indicating that the image was AI generated.” Google gives IPTC Digital Source Type metadata as an example. Do not strip that metadata during export, compression or CDN processing. The image must still accurately depict the product and meet the same composition, access and size rules as a conventional photograph.
Why an image is missing, rejected or still showing an old version
The image is missing
- The
image_linkattribute is empty, malformed or not synchronized from a third-party app. - The URL returns an error, a page instead of an image, or a restricted preview.
- Hosting or security settings block Google’s crawlers.
Populate the field, test the exact URL, and review server, CDN and firewall logs for crawler requests. If an app manages the feed, confirm that its latest image data has actually synchronized.
The file is too small or invalid
Compare the pixel dimensions with the product category and the effective date in the table above. Replace a thumbnail with a properly photographed or exported source; do not merely scale it up. For a format error, inspect the encoded file rather than trusting the extension alone.
Text, watermark or overlay disapproval
Remove every added callout, price, shipping message, service claim, code, watermark and post-production logo from the primary file. Submit the corrected asset and make sure a cached version is not being returned at the same URL.
The replacement has not appeared
Google says a renamed file can prompt prioritized recrawling in approximately 24–72 hours, while an unchanged URL can take up to six weeks to recrawl after its content changes. After a changed URL is submitted, Google may continue displaying the previously approved image for up to 30 days while reviewing the new asset. These are stated process windows, not guarantees for every item. If a prompt update matters, publish the corrected image under a new, stable filename, update the feed, and keep the new URL publicly accessible.

Practical sizing decisions for 2026 and 2027
Existing non-apparel catalog
An image at 100 × 100 pixels may satisfy the currently documented non-apparel minimum, but it is a poor quality target and will fall below the announced universal threshold. Replace it with a source at 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger whenever possible.
Existing apparel catalog
Apparel currently has a 250 × 250-pixel minimum. Treat that as transitional rather than a long-term target because the same 500 × 500 requirement is scheduled to apply to apparel and non-apparel products from January 31, 2027.
New photography and exports
Create a high-resolution master, frame the product at 75–90% of the canvas, and export a web-ready file that stays below 16 MB. Check the megapixel count after cropping: a very large square or panoramic file can exceed 64 megapixels even when its file size appears modest.
Common questions
Can I put a price or “Shop now” badge on the main image?
No. Added prices, shipping offers, calls to action and promotional copy belong outside the primary product image.
Can I use a watermark?
No. Google lists watermarks among the graphics to remove. A logo that is physically printed on the product is different from a logo overlaid during editing.

How many extra images can I submit?
You can submit up to 10 URLs through additional_image_link, in addition to the single URL in image_link.
Is 1500 × 1500 mandatory?
No. It is Google’s recommendation for quality. The applicable minimum is lower before January 31, 2027, but all products are announced to require at least 500 × 500 pixels from that date.
Can a lifestyle image be the only image?
Use a clear product representation in image_link. Put contextual scenes in lifestyle_image_link or relevant supplementary fields rather than relying on a scene that obscures the item.

What should I do when the old image remains visible?
Submit the corrected image under a new filename, update the feed and allow for Google’s stated recrawl and review windows. An unchanged URL can take up to six weeks to recrawl, and the prior approved image can remain visible for up to 30 days after a URL change.
