For a better Google Meet call, first confirm that Meet is using the right camera, microphone, and speakers. Then enable noise cancellation only for unwanted non-speech sounds, adjust video quality if your connection or device is struggling, and use visual effects only when they help. These controls can improve specific problems, but they cannot fix every network or hardware issue.
Check your camera, microphone, and speakers before joining
Start in Meet’s pre-join preview. A call can sound or look poor simply because Meet selected the wrong input or output device.
- Choose your devices: In the pre-join screen, open the camera, microphone, and speaker menus and select the devices you intend to use.
- Check the microphone: Speak and confirm that the microphone meter responds.
- Test the speakers: Play Meet’s test sound and confirm that it comes through the intended speakers or headset.
- Verify the camera: Check that the preview shows the correct camera feed.
Using an external microphone with speakers that are not paired with it can contribute to echo. Google’s audio and video setup guide explains the pre-join controls.
Turn on noise cancellation for non-speech sounds
Noise cancellation is useful for unwanted sounds such as typing, a door closing, room echo, or construction. Google says Meet filters non-speech noise; the feature does not remove voices from a television or people talking nearby. If participants need to hear music or another non-speech sound, turn noise cancellation off.

Open Audio settings before or during the meeting to look for the control. Availability and default behavior depend on the account, Workspace edition, device, and organization settings, so the option may not appear for everyone. Google lists eligibility and behavior in its noise cancellation guidance.
Lower video send quality when the connection or device is struggling
On desktop, open Settings, then Video. Select the camera you want to use and choose a send resolution. Reducing video quality may help when you experience delays, have a weak connection, need to conserve battery or data, or encounter other quality problems. It is a fallback to try, not a guaranteed fix.

Meet may offer background blur, static or custom backgrounds, and other appearance effects on supported devices and accounts. Look for the effects controls in your Meet interface; access can vary by client, account, region, and administrator settings.

- Consider privacy: A virtual background can conceal a room, but changing or removing it can expose sensitive details behind you.
- Consider performance: Effects can use more battery or slow a device. If Meet becomes less responsive, turn them off.
- Check device eligibility: Google’s current guidance says Android background effects require Android 9 or later and supported hardware, including Samsung Galaxy S9 and later or Pixel 3 and later. Availability may change; see Google’s Android effects information.
- Check desktop eligibility: Desktop effects and automatic lighting adjustments have their own compatibility, plan, and region conditions. See Google’s desktop effects guidance.
Troubleshoot problems that settings cannot fix
If the call remains choppy or unclear, check the connection and device as well as Meet’s controls. Google recommends testing bandwidth and latency, trying wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available, and closing tabs and apps you do not need. A headset with a microphone can help with poor audio; some Bluetooth headsets may not work well with Meet.
- Reduce the Meet window if your device is under strain.
- Try another microphone, speaker, camera, or device to isolate a hardware problem.
- Turn off your camera if the connection cannot handle video reliably.
- Check whether a VPN, network equipment, or traffic inspection and prioritization is affecting Meet.
Google’s call-quality troubleshooting guide provides further steps. These checks address different causes: no single setting can compensate for every network, device, or peripheral problem.
